Cox (1897 to 1940) Keowee Courier 1940 Death of Jesse Cox Mourned By Friends Jesse Cox, prominent citizen of Oconee county, died at the Oconee county hospital from injuries received at Grant's saw mill near Salem where he worked. He was struck by a belt which broke striking him about the head and shoulders, causing almost instant death. He lived about three hours after the accident. Mr. Cox was 41 years of age, a good citizen, ever loyal in the home, his church and the community in which he will be sadly missed. He was widely known and his kind and friendly disposition won him many friends. The beautiful floral arrangements attested the esteem in which he was held. He has prominent connections in this and other counties and also a large concourse of sorrowing friends to mourn his passing. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bertie Cox; three sons, Knight, Jack and James Cox; four sisters, Mrs. J. P. McCoy, Mrs. Mish Barnett, Miss Eugenia Cox, and Mrs. Henry Lee; two brothers, Will and Edd Cox. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to these bereaved ones. Funeral services were held from Pleasant Hill Baptist church December 23 at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Mr. Whitten, the Rev. Mr. Hayes and the Rev. Mr. Stancell conducting the services. Interment was in the church cemetery. Nieces served as flower girls Lucille and Katherine Cox, Gladys McCoy, Louise and Lucille Thompson, and Ruth Busch. Nephews were pallbearers; Luther Cox, William Henry Lee, Hercial Barnett, Charles, Henry and William Thompson.
