TITLE: EATON, Lucinda Jane Hull SOURCE: The Keowee Courier SUBMITTED BY: Susan Brock-Booker FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** EATON, Lucinda Jane Hull (1847-1939) Keowee Courier January 10, 1934, Mrs. Lou J. Eaton Died Last Sunday, Morning in Westminster At Advanced Age of 93 Years---Long a Resident of Walhalla, Announcement of the death of Mrs. Lou J. Eaton, which occurred at the home of her niece, Mrs. Annie Bearden, of Westminster, last Sunday morning, brought sorrow to many in Walhalla who highly esteemed this aged lady. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Eaton resided in Walhalla, her husband being one of the early residents of our town. Mr. Eaton died many years ago, and after the death of her husband and marriage of her niece, she made her home in Westminster with the latter. She was well known, and her passing brought sorrow to a wide circle of friends in Walhalla and elsewhere. Mrs. Eaton was a woman of many fine traits of character, not the least of which was her ardent love of humanity and her deep interest in her friends, particularly those in distress or sorrow. She was long a consistent member of the Baptist church, with which she united in early life. She was a native of Oconee, having been born in the Richland community. Mrs. Eaton frequently visited in Walhalla among her friends, but of late years she was prevented by reason of her age from "coming back home," as she always referred to her trips here for a day's pleasure among old friends. "I love Walhalla" was an expression we have often heard her use, for on her visists here it was an unfailing custom of hers to stop at The Courier office for a brief chat. And these were always bright spots for the editor of the paper as well as others of the force. To all she was "Aunt Lou" in the latter days, and in her passing we feel deep sorrow that another staunch friend has "gone on before." No need for multiplying words in her behalf. Her cheerful life was a benediction to all who knew her well, and as she passes from the scenes of activity to her last long and well earned rest, the memory of this venerable woman speaks volumes in her praise. Those who knew her best will long keep fresh the memory of "Aunt Lou" and will rejoice in the fact that it was their privilege to have known her. Her reward is sure for many years of loving service in behalf of her friends, neighbors and loved ones. Funeral services were conducted at the Bearden home in Westminster at 11 o'clock Monday morning. Dr. F. O. Mixon, pastor of the Westminster Baptist Church, of which, Mrs. Eaton was a devoted member, conducted the services, assisted by Rev. D. S. Drennan. Interment was made in the cemetery of the Walhalla Baptist Church. The following were active pallbearers: Harry McLees, D. J. Hall, T. E. Elrod, D. J. Miller, Junior Mack and J. R. Breazeale.
