Cobb (1863-1932) Tugaloo Tribune March 15, 1932, MRS. MARY ABBOTT DIES SUDDENLY, Mrs. Mary Abbott, life-long resident of Oconee county and widow of the late Marshall Abbott, died at her home on North Main street Wednesday night, March 9th, at about 11 o'clock. Her death was a great shock to her family, friends and neighbors. She had for a number of years been in poor health, being a sufferer of heart trouble. Increased worries over recent losses and bereavements is believed by members of the faily to have hastened the end. However, she had been up and about her household duties and retired Wednesday night at the usual time and apparently in her usual health. At about 10 o'clock she became alarmingly ill and a physician was summoned and neighbors called. She breathed her last soon after the doctor arrived and only a few present outside the family. Two daughters, Miss Katie Abbott and Mrs. E. R. White livve with her and a son, Z. T. Abbott lives only a short distance from the house. The death is a distinct shock to the family, as it is the seventh member to pass away in a little more than seven years, the first being Mr. Ronnie Abbott, son and brother, who died shortly after their residence was burned, kown as the house Dr. Mitchell built, which later became the Oconee hospital. Mrs Abbott was the daughter of the late John Cobb and her mother was Ara Adair Cobb and she was born in the Coneross section. She was in her sixty-eighth year. Of the large family of brothers and sisters, only two brothers now living, Mr. William M. Cobb of Walhalla, and Mr. James Cobb of Pelzer. While in her teens she was married to Marshall Abbott and they reared a large family of sons and daughters. She was a good homemaker, a devoted wife, kind friend, and an affectionate mother, and in every community she made her home her life rang out true and she made others happy. Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Mr. H. E. Abbott, McKesport, Pa.; Mr. J. D. Abbott, Birmingham, Ala.; Mr. Z. T. Abbott, Westerminster; Mrs. W. W. Mitchell (Lila), Tallahassee, Fla.; Miss Katie Abbott and Mrs. E. R. White (Guynelle), Westminster. The three children preceding her to the grave being Claude, Ronnie, and Mrs. R. W. (Mallie) Grubbs. To the children, brothers and grandchildren is extended the profound sympathy of a large circle of friends. Mrs. Abbott had been a member of Coneross Baptist church for more than fifty years and the old home church always had a warm place in her heart. Mr. Abbott, her husband, died March 18, 1926. His death also, was sudden as he dropped dead in the road while returning from the field to his home for dinner. Brief funeral services were held from the Abbott home on Friday afternoon at three-thirty and the large number who gathered for the tribute of respect testified the esteem in which Mrs. Abbott was held. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. L. H. Raines and assisted by Dr. F. O. Mixon and Rev. M. J. Stansell. The Abbott Brothers, Seneca undertakers, had charge of the burial which took place in Coneross cemetery at the conclusion of the funeral. The pallbearers were Messrs. Jas. A. Lawrence, D. J. Miller, W. F. Crenshaw, Lee A. Haley, O. W. Pitts and C. M. Miller. Among the relatives who came for the funeral and interment out of town and out of the county ? Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Leathers, Atlanta, Ga.; Jesse Coffee, Gainesville, Ga.; Mrs. Rob Worley, Miss Nannie Worley, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Reeves, and Mrs. R. C. Topping, of Anderson; Mrs. Janie Thompson, Nashville, Tenn.; Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cobb, B. F. Cobb, Drayton and Annie Cobb, Mr. and Mrs. Romaine Cobb and two sons of Pelzer; Warren T. Cobb and family of Catteechee, and a large number from Seneca, Walhalla and other sections of Oconee.
