Confederate Veteran is Called to Reward John J. Hatcher, 82, passes 
suddenly at 4 o'clock this morning With the death this morning at 4 
o'clock of John J. Hatcher, 82 years of age, another valiant 
Confederate veteran has answered taps and has been summoned to his 
reward. Mr. Hatcher, the father of L. L. Hatcher of the Sullivan 
Hardware Co., passed quietly but suddenly, his death coming as a shock
to his family and many friends. He died at his home on East Orr Street
where he lived with his daughter, Miss Anna Hatcher. Mr. Hatcher was 
said to have appeared yesterday to be in excellent health. He had not 
been ill lately and was remarkably well preserved physically despite 
his advanced years. He was known throughout Anderson, expecially among
veterans of the War Between the States, having served by the side of 
many of Anderson's sons who volunteered their services to the 
Confederacy. When but a youth, Mr. Hatcher offered his services and 
served practically throughout the conflict. He was a courageous 
soldier, intrepid in the face of reverses, and his spirit won the 
admiration of his comrades. Mr. Hatcher was made a prisoner by the 
Union forces in an engagement during the war and was held for a long 
period of time. Mr. Hatcher was born and reared in Anderson county and
but for the period of his service with the Confederate troops spent 
his whole life in this county. For many years following the war he 
engaged in farming, later retiring from active life due to his 
advanced age. For many years he had made his home in the city proper,
his residence, being next that of his son, Mr. L. L. Hatcher. Mr. 
Hatcher was preceded to the grave some twenty years ago by his beloved
wife. He is survived by one son, L. L. Hatcher; two daughters, Miss 
Anna Hatcher who lived with him, and Mrs. E. R. Bobo of near Jasper, 
Ala. One brother, T. H. Hatcher of Eastern Texas, also survived him.
Mr. Hatcher was a member of the Oakdale Baptist church for many years.
The funeral service will be held at Oakdale, in Fork, township, at 3 
o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. E. C. White officiating. Interment 
will occur in the Oakdale cemetery.

NOTE: The "T. H. Hatcher" in the above obit should be "T. K. Hatcher"
