'Kenny' Breeden, 63 MILLINGTON, Md. - Clinton L. "Kenny" Breeden, of Millington, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 63. Mr. Breeden was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Baltimore, son of the late Samuel and Helen Shiflett Breeden. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1963 to 1965. Mr. Breeden was employed as a diesel mechanic for 27 years with General Motors Railroad Division in Halethorpe, retiring in 1992. He and his wife moved from Severn to Millington in 1993. He didn't know a stranger and enjoyed reading, listening to old music, playing cards and joking with family and friends. Mr. Breeden was a member of the United Auto Workers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly A. Crawford. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gloria Rodgers Breeden; two children, Carl Dean Breeden of Severn and Wanda A. Brown of Pasadena; a brother, Harry Breeden of Crofton; four grandchildren, Melony Kimble, Aaron Brown, J.C. Breeden and Trevor Breeden; four step-grandchildren, Matt Eve, Amber Eve, Larisa Brown and Alicia Brown; and his closest companion, his dog, Sassy. Everett, 92 DOVER - Nancy J. Everett, of Dover, died Friday, May 23, 2003, of cardiac arrest in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 92. Mrs. Everett was born May 5, 1911, in Wilmington, daughter of the late John and Nancy (Alexander) MacKnight. At the age of 62, she took retirement from Playtex of Dover, having served 24 years as a customer representative for the accounting department. She enjoyed her retirement with family and friends and loved boating and being on the water. She also enjoyed doing needlework, knitting and crocheting, and had an appreciation for birds and nature. Mrs. Everett was a life member of the Capitol Grange and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Calver H. Everett; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Ann and Francis Nichols of Dover; two sisters, Ann Thompson of Townsend and Margaret Stewart of Waynesboro, Va.; two brothers, Jules MacKnight of Ogden, Pa., and Carlisle MacKnight of Harrisburg, Pa.; three grandsons and three granddaughters-in-law, Francis Nichols Jr. and Diana Nichols of Chestertown, Md., and Jon and Melanie Nichols and Michael and Carole Nichols, all of Dover; and six great-grandchildren and the wife of one, Jonny and Susan Nichols of Camden, Robert Nichols, Matthew Nichols, Tina Nichols and Justin Nichols, all of Dover, and Heather Nichols of Chestertown. She was 92. Mrs. Mackes was born Feb. 7, 1911, in Guanica, Puerto Rico, where her father, the late Douglas Murphy, was employed with the South Puerto Rico Sugar Co. at Ensenada. She attended private school in Ensenada, Yauco High School and LaSell College in Auburndale, Mass. Mrs. Mackes married Phil Donald "Don" Mackes, then of Stroudsburg, Pa., in 1932. After the birth of her two sons, and as her children grew, she was called by God to a ministry of prayer. She held weeklong prayer missions, schools of prayer and prayer groups in many church denominations in eastern states. Her mission work also took her to many countries overseas. She authored a book on the life of prayer, "The Overcoming Power," and a booklet, "Seven Steps to God's Healing Power." In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1974; and by her youngest sister, Kitty Murphy. She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, French Donald and his wife Cari, and John David and his wife Carol; six grandchildren, French Donald Jr., Joseph Frederick, Charles David, Jennifer Lynn, Kathryn Elizabeth and John David Jr.; and five great-grandchildren, James Andrew, Stephen Douglas, Claire Elizabeth, Philip Donald and Joseph David; a brother, Ian Douglas Murphy, M.D.; and two sisters, Jean Murphy Aneda and Dorothy Murphy Cromb. "Mickey" Mecke, of Elkton, died peacefully of natural causes Thursday, May 22, 2003, in his home, surrounded by his family. He was 69. Mr. Mecke was born April 14, 1934, in Hollisterville, Pa., son of the late William and Anna Mecke. He was a resident of Cecil County for more than 40 years. He retired in 1985 from Overnite Transportation. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He spent many years enjoying flea markets and antique cars. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Mecke was a member of Local 126, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, in Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William "Butts" Mecke; a sister-in-law, Carol Mecke; and a stepdaughter, Sheryl Ward. 'Sweetie' Peters, 83 MILLSBORO - Jeanette M. "Sweetie" Peters, of Long Neck, died of natural causes Thursday, May 22, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 83. Mrs. Peters was born in Harrington, daughter of the late Thomas and Mattie Tibbit Markland. She was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church, Millsboro, and Trinity Welseyan Church, Dover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Peters, in 1990; a daughter, Geraldine Melvin; a brother, Abner Markland; and a sister, Polly Hobbs. She is survived by two granddaughters, Kellie Wilson of Dover and Sheri Caldwell of Seaford; two sisters, Doris Gillard of Dover and Marguerite Bailey of Camden; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Alysia and Alayna; her good friend and companion, Henry L. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * J. Marshall Phillips, 87 LAUREL - J. Marshall Phillips, of Laurel, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 87. Mr. Phillips was born in Laurel, son of the late Columbus W. and Eliza Adams Phillips. He was a member of the Laurel High School Class of 1934. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1938. After college, he spent a few years as the administrator for the National Youth Administration for Sussex County, helping find employment for young people. In 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and proudly served his country during World War II. He was enlisted as an infantry drill instructor and stationed in Camp Croft, S.C. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces as a navigation cadet and served in Germany. He was discharged in 1945. Upon leaving military service, he started J. Marshall Phillips Trucking Co., from which he retired in the early 1990s. Mr. Phillips was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Laurel and played an instrumental part in planning and building the facility that currently is in Laurel. He was an active and involved member of Portsville United Methodist Church and was very supportive of the Laurel Little League. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha E. Hudson; and two sisters, May P. Williams and Hazel P. Glover. He is survived by two sons, Mark Phillips and Jeffrey Phillips, both of Laurel; a brother and sister-in-law, Woodrow W. and Mary Belle Phillips of Laurel; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean P. Edwards and David F. Edwards Jr. of aurel; a granddaughter, Sara Phillips of Laurel; and several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren. Smith, of Millsboro, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 69. Mr. Smith was born in Millsboro, son of the late Irvin and Alice Brasure Smith. He was a lifelong farmer, poultryman and owner-operator of the family farm, Country Living Farms. He and his family also operated the Country Living Mobile Court since 1968, and Country Living Produce, Millsboro. Mr. Smith was a member of Gideons International, the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Georgetown and the Epworth Fellowship Church, Laurel. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ellen Maude Hitchens Smith; three sons and two daughters-in-law, J. Randall Smith, Donald J. and Jill Smith and Kevin B. and Terri Smith, all of Millsboro; and four grandchildren, David Smith, Stephen Smith, Hayden Smith and Krista Ka Smith.
