He was 72. Mr. Deusa was born March 23, 1931, in Philadelphia, son of the late Joseph Deusa and Violet Richards Deusa. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. After being discharged from the service, Mr. Deusa was a self-employed Carpenter and worked many years as a carpenter for Harman's Homes in Marydel. He enjoyed woodworking, making yard ornaments and children's toys. Mr. Deusa spent most of his life in the Maryland area and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Marydel. He also was a member of the VFW in Denton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances "June," in 1991; and his second wife, Doris, in 2000. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Wanda Deusa of Sudlersville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and David Soldano of Warminster, Pa., and Diane Edwards of Marydel; two brothers, Alex Deusa of Dover and Tom Deusa of Marydel; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Margaret and Earl Owen of Marydel, Del., and Rose Andell of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and seven grandchildren, Clinton, Sophia, Shelly, Christina, Pamela, Paula and DJ. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover. Services will be noon Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Eastern Shore National Cemetery, 6827 E. New Market Elwood Road, Hurlock. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720; or to the Calvary United Methodist Church, Marydel, MD 21649. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Jean McComrick Dougherty, 71 DAGSBORO - Jean McComrick Dougherty of Dagsboro died, after a long illness, Wednesday, May 7, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 71. Mrs. Dougherty was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Frankford, daughter of the late Margaret and Edwin McComrick. She graduated from John M. Clayton High School in 1949 as the class valedictorian, having achieved the highest academic average in the history of the school. She was a member of Who's Who in Business and retired as co-owner of Linan Construction in Philadelphia, the city where she made her home for almost 20 years. Mrs. Dougherty will be remembered for her many talents, which included gourmet cooking, quilt making and gardening, as well as for her love of animals and nature. Those who knew and loved her will miss her spirit, intellect, wise counsel and generous heart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Aloysius Dougherty, May 6, 1996; and by her daughter, Susan Poteat, Dec. 15, 2002. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Quillen and Vito Amitrano of Bronxville, N.Y.; her granddaughter, Victoria Jean Poteat of Frankford; a sister, Betty Walker of Rehoboth Beach; a brother and sister-in- law, Calvin and Jane McComrick of Dagsboro; and many beloved nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews. She was 67. Mrs. Griffin was born in Henderson, Md., daughter of the late John and Catherine Bodine LePore. She had lived in Dover until moving to Wilmington and later settling in Newark, where she had lived for the past 40 years. She had been a restaurateur and later became a beautician, operating her own business. A dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Griffin will be remembered for her love for crafts and flowers, and a special fondness for Atlantic City, N.J. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John S. Griffin III, who died in 1998. She is survived by a son, John L. Griffin of Newark; two daughters and their spouses, Constance and Richard Holland of Dover and Cathy and William Cauffman of Wilmington; and five grandchildren, Trey Holland of Dover, Carolyn Lyon of Milford and Lauren Wilson, Scott Wilson and Valarie Cauffman, all of Wilmington. She was 43. Ms. Lichtley was born Oct. 22, 1959, in Pottstown, Pa. She lived there before moving to Milton more than 15 years ago. She had been employed as a cashier for Food Lion in Rehoboth Beach for a while, before becoming ill two years ago. Prior to that, she had worked for the Super G in Rehoboth Beach, and while living in Pottstown, she was employed by Spring City Knitting. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandson, Tyler, who was the "apple of her eye." She also liked to crochet. Ms. Lichtley had been a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Birdsboro, Pa., and had attended the Wesleyan Church in Milton for a brief while. She is survived by her parents, George and Lorraine (Koenig) Lichtley of Milton; a son, Joseph Dice of Milton; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Joseph Bradford of Milton; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Kelly Weldon of Milton; a grandson, Tyler A. Bradford of Milton; her fiance, Henry Stout of Milton; and her caregivers, Chrissie Saurman and Kenny and Jasmine Dutton. Erle Miller of Seaford, formerly of Dagsboro, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 72. Mr. Miller was born in Westover, Md., into the Mennonite Community. He attended Holly Grove School and Church. Mr. Miller served in the U.S. Army for nine years. He was a gifted mechanic and heavy equipment operator and a skilled welder. In his spare time, Mr. Miller loved to watch NASCAR and tend to his garden. He is survived by his daughter, Paula F. Spencer of Dover; his companion, Mary Kersey of Seaford; two nieces, Joey M. Sterling and Cathy Kurtz, both of Westover; three nephews, George Malin III and Joseph Malin, both of Westover, and Stanley D. Miller of Ohio; and many cousins in Fairview, Mich. O'Neal, 87 LAUREL - Alice M. O'Neal of Laurel died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Barclay Friends, West Chester, Pa. She was 87. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Delmar, Md., daughter of the late Walter and Mary Insley. She spent most of her life in Laurel and for the past 30 years spent winters in Punta Gorda, Fla. She was a homemaker and a talented seamstress who made drapery and upholstery for many people in the Delmarva area. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and will be remembered for her sense of humor as well as her kind heart. Mrs. O'Neal became an avid golfer during the past 30 years and was a member of the Seaford and Punta Gorda golf clubs. She was a player on the golf team at both clubs and participated in many team and individual events and earned many prizes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Milton L. O'Neal. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet O. and Martin Renninger of West Chester and Carol O. and Myers Hammond of Prescott, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Beth R. Mulhern of West Chester and Laura A. Carsley of Coatesville, Pa.; a sister, Evelyn Bean of Gaithersburg, Md.; a great- granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Oswell of Dover died Tuesday May 13, 2003, in Bayhealth- Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 77. Mr. Oswell was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Memphis, Tenn., son of the late Evander R. Oswell Sr. and Selma Oliver Oswell. He served in the U.S. Navy, the Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force before retiring in 1973 after 30 years of service. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the service, he worked at Mid State Office Equipment in Dover. He enjoyed playing golf. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Randall Alan Oswell, in 1989. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Oswell; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Diana Oswell of Dover, Timothy and Monika Oswell of Magnolia and Brent and Marlene Oswell of Felton; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Thomas Dutrow of Frederick, Md.; a brother, William Oswell of Atlanta; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Sylvester of near Hartly passed away, after a long illness, Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in his home with family and friends present. He was 79. Mr. Sylvester was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Henderson, Md., to the late Morris and Mildred (Quillen) Sylvester. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, with service in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He started Advance Construction Co. in 1965 and retired in 1990. Mr. Sylvester attended Bridge to Life Christian Church. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Judy Sylvester of Camden-Wyoming; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah J. and Michael Rinehart of Little Creek; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Donald and Susan Sylvester of Hartly and Robert and Patsy Sylvester of Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Earl Bilbrough of Hartly; a special friend, Virginia Hartnett of Dover; four grandchildren, Dina Nay, Troy Sylvester, Christopher Marrero and Nathan Marrero; and three great-grandchildren, Cameron Nay, Kaleigh Nay and Sierra Sylvester. Du Pont Highway, Dover, DE 19901; and/or to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Louis Harry 'Abe' Stewart Jr., 69 BRIDGEVILLE - Louis Harry "Abe" Stewart Jr. was born Oct. 24, 1933, to the late Louis H. Stewart Sr. and Helena B. Parker. He went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 10, 2003, in his home in Bridgeville at the age of 69. Louis received his early schooling at Lewes Jr./Sr. High School. He attended William Jason High School in Georgetown. He would then further his education Delaware State College (now University). While attending, Louis became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Delaware State Education Association. "Abe" would then receive his bachelor's in education. He began his first year of teaching at the Indian Mission, Lewes, and Phyllis Wheatley School in Bridgeville. He was gainfully employed with the Woodbridge School District and one of its predecessors, the Bridgeville School District, for 39 years until his retirement in 1994. He married Patricia Carney June 22, 1963. This union would bring two lovely daughters. Two brothers, Paul and Gilbert Sr., preceded Louis in death. Louis leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Patricia Y. Stewart of Bridgeville; two daughters, Thayer Stewart of Milford and Natasha Stewart of Bridgeville; two sons, Leonard Maull of Dover and Keith Wylie of Lewes; three grandsons, Vernon Brown Jr. and Brian Wylie, both of Milford, and Brandon Wylie of Lewes; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Kenyan and Novis Parker of Frederick, Md., and Granville Stewart of Lewes; three sisters, Sarah Stewart, Iona Stewart and Antoinette Handy, all of Lewes; an uncle and an aunt by marriage, Clarence and Pauline Stewart of Lewes; two sisters-in-law and their respective husbands, Helena Fields and Earl Fields Sr. of Lincoln and Virginia and Clyde Parker of Milford; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; one special cousin, Katherine "Kitty" Perry of Dover; and three special friends, Clifford Jackson of Bridgeville, Nelson Brewington of Greenwood and George Benson of Seaford.
