He was 84. Mr. Carter was born March 31, 1918, in Summit, N.J. He was a machinist for Hercules in Dover, N.J. Mr. Carter was affiliated with Old Paths Church of Christ in Georgetown. He belonged to the Coon Hunters Club and the Delaware Marva Driving Club. He is survived by his wife, Marion Ruth Carter of Lincoln; three daughters, Susan Mancuso of Paupack, Pa., Bonnie Carter of Lambertville, N.J. and Carol Halloran of Oxford, N.J.; three grandchildren, Kelsey Halloran, Carter Halloran and Nicole Mancuso; and a sister, Lillian Carter of Effort, Pa. 'Gene' Crain, 46 WEBSTER, Fla. - Eugene T. "Gene" Crain of Webster died Monday, March 10, 2003, in his home. He was 46. Mr. Crain was a native of Dover, Del. He moved to this area in 1993 from Arizona. He was self-employed in the furniture repair industry. Mr. Crain was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Crain, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Janet; five daughters, Valerie and Kathy Crain, both of Dover, Del., Nicole Crain of Rocklin, Calif., Delaina Crain of Webster and April Lynch of Webster; a son, Robert Rigney of Lakeland; his mother, Phyllis Flores of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Jeff King of Hartly, Del.; a sister, Karen King of Felton, Del.; his maternal grandparents, Doris Jones of Marydel, Del. and Merrill Jones of Lake Wales, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Mikayla Allison and Heidi Lynch both of Webster. Chaplain Larry Richards will officiate. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Franklin Archibald Dick, 89 CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Franklin Archibald Dick of Chestertown died Friday, March 7, 2003, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 89. Mr. Dick was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Philadelphia. He attended the Lawrenceville School and Princeton University. He was a Veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army Air Force, 360 Fighter Squadron, in the European theater. Mr. Dick, a chemical engineer, successfully registered a patent for a testing system used in the printing ink industry. He spent the first 25 years of his career with the Interchemical Company and then worked for Converter's Ink. In retirement, he served as President of Marbetech, Inc. until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. He is survived by two daughters, Marjorie Anderson of Amelia Island, Fla. and Elizabeth Smith of Boston, Mass.; three grandsons, George Cooper of Arlington, Va., F. Cullen Cooper of Greensboro, N.C. and William Cooper of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Mia Dick West of Baltimore; and his two half- brothers, Edward A. Griffith and William L. Garrett of Dover died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 81. Mr. Garrett was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Tunnellton, W.Va., son of the late Warren and Olive (Phyllips) Garrett. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Garrett went to Morgantown High School and West Virginia University of Welding. He worked with and out of Pipefitters Local 782. Mr. Garrett was a member of the Calvary Church of the Nazarene for 54 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Charles Garrett; and a sister, Virginia McFarland. Hastings, 72 SEAFORD - Betty A. Hastings of Seaford died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in her home. She was 72. Mrs. Hastings was the daughter of the late G. Ray and Martha L. Hastings. She was a graduate of Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She retired from Nanticoke Memorial Hospital as an Operating Room Nurse in 1993 after 36 years. Lenhoff, 86 LAUREL - Margaret R. Lenhoff of Laurel died Saturday, March 8, 2003, in her home. She was 86. Mrs. Lenhoff was a magistrate for the state of Delaware for a four-year term. She was a freelance news writer for the Wilmington Morning News, the Journal-Every Evening and the State Register. She loved reading, knitting and crocheting. Mrs. Lenhoff was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 19 for 33 years where she was publicity chairman for 14 years, kitchen treasurer for 22 years and received recognition on the national level and from the Department of Delaware for serving as Publicity Chairman. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church since 1939 and was Past President of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and a member of the Laurel Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, George William Lenhoff Sr. in 1982. She is survived by her son, G. He was 92. Mr. McDonald was born in Edgewater, N.J., son of the late John V. and Mary (Eichoff) McDonald. He was a graduate of Edgewater High School in Edgewater, in 1929 and received his bachelor's degree from Trenton State Teachers College, now known as the University of New Jersey, in 1933. Mr. McDonald started his teaching career in Delaware at Selbyville High School in 1945. He transferred to Harrington High School in 1946 where he established the business department. While at Harrington High School, he coached baseball, cross country, basketball, football and soccer. He had the privilege of winning several league championships in baseball and won two state championships in cross country. When Lake Forest High School opened, he transferred there, heading the business department until his retirement in 1972. After his retirement, he traveled with his wife Jeanne McDonald throughout North America and Europe. In his spare time, he liked gardening. He grew roses for Star Roses in Kennett Square, Pa. At one time, he had over 40 rose bushes around his home. Mr. McDonald was active with the Harrington Alumni Association and never missed an alumni banquet. He served as president of the Harrington Rotary Club in 1950. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne in 1998. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James J. and Barbara J. McDonald of Live Oak, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Sklaroff of Philadelphia, Pa.; five grandchildren, Sean and Kevin McDonald of San Antonio, Sara Sklaroff of Washington, D.C. and Samuel and Miranda Sklaroff of Philadelphia, Pa. She was 77. Mrs. Parkhurst was born Aug. 1, 1925, to the late Mae Elizabeth (Christopher) Shockley and James G. Shockley. She was a humanitarian who enjoyed helping others. She never met a stranger. Mrs. Parkhurst enjoyed crossword puzzles, staying active, and was an avid reader. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by Fred Parkhurst; a daughter, Patty; six brothers; and three sisters. She was 71. Mrs. Rials was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Dover, Del., daughter of the late William C. and Bessie V. Barrett. She attended schools in the Wilmington, Del., area. She spent most of her adult life as a military housewife, raising her four sons and enjoying her grandchildren. Mrs. Rials, prior to her illness, loved going to the casinos, going to yard sales and going back to Delaware to visit her family there. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Don C. Rials; four sons; James Melvin of Donaldson, Ark., William Melvin of Loveland, Colo., and Don D. Rials and Michael Rials, both of Champaign; a sister, Emma Wilson of Dover; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews in Delaware that loved her and will miss her very, very much. Stranix of Millsboro, formerly of Douglassville, Pa. and Feasterville, Pa., died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in the Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 65. Mr. Stranix was born in Philadelphia, son of the late William and Margaret Stranix. He was a veteran and served in the Navy and the 101st Airborne. Mr. Stranix retired from Calbar, Inc. of Philadelphia in 2000 and moved to Delaware. He loved golfing, fishing, and hunting. Mr. Stranix was a former member of the Springford Country Club in Royersford, Pa., a member of the Shawnee Country Club of Milford, the Color Guard of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale, and a former board member of the I.C.R.I. Association. He was also a member of the Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Oak Orchard. She worked as a unit secretary for Christiana Medical Center for 25 years until retiring in 1997. Mrs. Tavani was also involved in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Delaware Volunteer Fireman's Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husband, Frederick Tavani in 1999. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm. She also worked at the Chestertown Defense Plant up until it exploded in 1954. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, traveling, boating, bird-watching and looking for Indian artifacts. Mrs. Towner was a member of the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Auxiliary, the World Wildlife Fund and the Kennedyville Homemakers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bonn Towner Jr., in 1986; three brothers, Paul Naundorf, Herbert Naundorf and Ralph Naundorf; and a grandson, Adam Courtney. She is survived by two sons, Joseph B. Towner and Ralph Courtney, both of Chestertown; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
