Earl Foster, 49 CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Jacqueline A. Earl Foster of Chestertown died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in her home. She was 49. Ms. Foster was born Oct. 31, 1953, in Still Pond, daughter of the late Jack and Katie Malone Earl. She was educated in the Kent County, Md., school system and graduated from Garnett High School. She attended the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Baltimore City Community College, graduating as a registered nurse, receiving an associate in science in nursing degree. Ms. Foster was married to Randolf E. Foster in 1984; they had two daughters. She is survived by two daughters, Alechia Foster and Desiree Foster, both of Baltimore; three grandchil-dren, Dania Spence, Sadé Johnson and Brittany Foster; two sisters, Rosalind Wilson and Marjorie Wilker-son, both of Chestertown; a brother, James Burgess of Chestertown; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family. Jackson of Millington died of heart failure Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in the Kent '&;' Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. She was 80. Mrs. Jackson was born in Templeville, daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Lang Kovacs. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed word games and sewing for many years. In her private time, she enjoyed reading her Bible. Mrs. Jackson also enjoyed being outdoors working in her garden and raising her chickens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward S. Jackson Sr., two brothers and five sisters. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ralph K. Jackson; three sons, Ralph Jackson Jr. of Goldsboro and Richard A. Jackson and Thomas A. Jackson, both of Millington; three daughters, Rose Marie Hudson of Henderson and Daisy Mae Combs and Susan Ellen Vogel, both of Millington; a brother, Charles James Kovacs of Ridgley; a sister, Theresa Voshell of Parkton, 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. "Johnny" Johnson Jr. of Dover died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in his home sur-rounded by his family and friends. He was 78. Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Laurel, son of the late Clarence E. and Sara Whaley Johnson. He served in the U.S. Army and then in Central Engineering at Dover Air Force Base as a civilian em-ployee. He retired after 30 years in 1983. After retirement, he worked with his son at Johnson Electrical Construction for 15 years. He loved his family and grandchildren. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Camden/Wyoming V.F.W. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dyson Johnson, in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Belle Webb Johnson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny C. and Janet Johnson of Dover and Tim S. and Jeannie Johnson of Felton;two brothers, Roland Johnson of Camden and Jimmie Johnson of Laurel; five sisters, Isabelle Adkins of Delmar, Gertrude King of Dover, Betty Mitchell and Ann Wainwright, both of Delmar, and Gloria Jean Milligan of Laurel; four grandchil-dren, Michael and his wife, Jennifer, Wesley, Matthew, and Lindsay ; and a close friend, Sam Hughes, and his family, Tiffany, Sammy, Mike and Shirley. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. --------------------------------------------------------------- * William Allan Lewis Kaufmann, 82 DOVER - William Allan Lewis Kaufmann of Dover died of pneumonia Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in Bay-health-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 82. Mr. Kaufmann was born in New York, N.Y., son of the late Allan Lewis Kaufmann and Beatrice Williams Thompson. He graduated from El Paso High School, El Paso, Texas, in 1936, and went on to earn his bachelor's de-gree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., in 1940. In 1943, he received his degree of bachelor of legal let-ters and doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor, Mich. Mr. Kaufmann was a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in Guam during World War II. He was employed as a licensed agent of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Milwaukee from 1947 to 1971 and was a chartered life underwriter since 1952. He later was associated with the Dover law offices of Morris, James, Hitchens and Williams from 1972 to 1981. Mr. Kaufmann was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Dover, where he served as treasurer from 1964 to 2000, vestryman and junior warden from 1979 to 1982 and senior warden from 1982 to 1985. He served on the board of directors of the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1980 to 1990, and also on the Finance Committee, Search Committee, Annual Luncheon Planning Committee, Nominating Committee and Awards Committee. He also served as vice chairman and chairman of the Kent County Branch of the American Red Cross and served as director of the Kent County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and as treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of the Dover Historical Society since 1981. In addition to his many friends, he is survived by a cousin, Richard Solomon, and Mr. Solomon's wife, both of Chevy Chase, Md. Merriken of Federalsburg died Monday, June 23, 2003, in Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. He was 81. Mr. Merriken was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Veteran, Canada, son of the late LeRoy Sippie and Ellenor Ol-sen Merriken. After graduating from Federalsburg High School, Class of 1939, he attended the University of Maryland and graduated in 1944 with a degree in electrical engineering. He joined the U.S. Navy May 20, 1944, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged May 23, 1946. He returned to Federalsburg in 1963 and he worked at Airpax in Cambridge until his retirement Dec. 31, 1986. Mr. Merriken, while living in Federalsburg, attended the Union United Methodist Church, and later, at-tended the Shore Harvest Presbyterian Church in Easton. He was very active in Boy Scouts and Little League for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Kleist, on April 29, 1997. He is survived by his wife, the former Marilla Settle, whom he married March 8, 1947; four sons, Ken-neth B. Merriken of Columbia, S.C., Brian N. Merriken of Salisbury, Walter L. Merriken of Warrington, Va. and Marcus D. Merriken of Federalsburg; three daughters, Rebecca M. Stefanski of Alexandria, Va., E. Dee Merriken of Easton and Mary Waltenberger of Federalsburg; a sister, Jean M. Andrew of Federalsburg; and 10 grandchildren. She was 76. Mrs. Messick was born March 13, 1927, in Milford, daughter of the late Clark Henry and Mary A. McColley Wisseman. She was a homemaker most of her life. She and her late husband, Burton H. Messick, spent a few months each year for eight years as Volunteers In Mission with the Red Bird Missionary Conference in Kentucky. They left the program in 1992 to spend life in retirement at their family home in Milford. Mrs. Messick was an active member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Milford, where she served in many capacities. She is survived by a son, John A. Schreck of Warwick, R.I.; four daughters, Donna M. Lewis of Harring-ton, Marjorie Churchill of Milford, Janice E. Winkler of Felton and Betty Ann Wells of Virginia Beach, Va., 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 SE Front Street, Milford, DE 19963. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Henry Arthur 'Art' Newton Jr., 84 SEAFORD - Henry Arthur "Art" Newton Jr. of Seaford died Monday, June 23, 2003, in the Methodist Manor House after a long illness. He was 84. Mr. Newton was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Columbia, S.C., son of the late Henry A. and Irene B. Newton. During his childhood, he lived in South Carolina and Dover, New Hampshire. He attended Prep school at Milton Academy in Milton, Mass., then college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. and gradu-ated with a degree in chemical engineering. During school he played football, hockey and track. While at RPI he met and later married Vivian Turner, his beloved wife of 60 years. Mr. Newton was a naval officer aboard the USS Hamlin during World War II in the Pacific. After the war, he became superintendent of Behr Manning Manufacturers. He later accepted employment with the E. I. DuPont Co. in Seaford, retiring in 1979. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed travel, boating, hunting and fishing. While in Seaford he was president of the School Board for two terms, was active and served in many po-sitions with Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, was a member of the Power Squadron and Yacht Club and was on planning committees for the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his wife, Vivian "Vicky" Newton; a son, Henry A. Newton III of Seaford; two daughters, Sandy N. Eisel of Ocean Pines, Md. and Shari N. Robinson of Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, Feaster New-ton of Asheboro, N.C.; a sister, Helen Peterman of Dover, N.H.; six grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Rouse of Wyoming died of natural causes Monday, June 23, 2003 in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 70. Mr. Rouse was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Kinston, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict. Mr. Rouse was a refrigeration mechanic and began his working career with Sears and, shortly after, with Air Mod as an aircraft mechanic for Dover Air Force Base. After leaving the base, he took a position with Playtex in 1962 as an air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, retiring in 1995. He remained active until the present with Alexander RV and the Sheraton Dover Hotel, Dover. His many hobbies included hunting, especially quail. He was an avid baseball fan. Early in his life, he played minor-league ball. He also played on a team with the U.S. Air Force during his military service. He loved people and was gifted with the art of conversation. He always was willing to help neighbors and friends. He always will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, grandfather and coach. Mr. Rouse was a life member of Memorial Fire Co. of Slaughter Beach. He also was very active in the Camden-Wyoming Little League and Big League Baseball as a coach. He was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Rouse, and two brothers, Thurman Rouse and Uzzle Rouse. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Pat Rouse; his mother, Gatha Rouse of Kinston; six children, Deb-bie Lee Rouse of Wyoming, Lorraine C. Rouse of Camden, Bobbie Michelle Fader of Hong Kong, Rudy Blair Rouse of London, England, and Bruce Timmons and Carol Leager, both of Clayton; three brothers, Elbert Rouse of Greensboro, N.C., Jimmy Rouse of Kinston and William Henry Rouse of Dubuque, Iowa; two sis-ters, Clara Algar of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Gloria King of Kinston; and seven grandchildren, John Ryan Rouse of Camden, Charlie Jones of Milton, Sydney Fader and Elliott Fader, both of Hong Kong, and Earl Timmons, Jamie Leager and Tricia Bowman, all of Clayton.
