Cernobyl, 49 DOVER - Jerome L. Cernobyl of Dover died after a lengthy illness Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 49. Mr. Cernobyl was born in Bethlehem, Pa., son of Estella Mesorus Cernobyl of Bethlehem and the late Jack L. Cernobyl Sr. He had moved to Dover in 1976 while serving with the U.S. Air Force as a law-enforcement specialist. Mr. Cernobyl, upon leaving the Air Force in 1978, served with the Smyrna Police Department. He graduated from Wesley College in 1981 and pursued a career in nursing, serving at Milford Memorial Hospital and later at Kent General Hospital, until illness forced his retirement in 1984. A dedicated husband and father, he enjoyed collecting baseball and NASCAR cards and collectibles. Mr. Cernobyl was a life member of Robbins Hose Co. No. 1, Inc. (Dover's volunteer fire department) and a longtime participant in the Caesar Rodney Wrestling Boosters Club, where he had served as a treasurer and videographer for more than 11 years. Active with the Dover Little League, he served as a coach and umpire. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara Hurd Cernobyl of Dover; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas L. and Dorie J. Cernobyl of Lawton,Okla., and Jeffrey L. and Kellie J. Cernobyl of Newark; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack L. and Stephanie Cernobyl of Allentown, Pa.; a granddaughter, Morgan Kelley Cernobyl of Lawton; and two nephews, Matthew Cernobyl and Mark Cernobyl, both of Allentown. Deeney, 86 MILFORD - John J. Deeney of Milford died, after a long lillness, Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Life Care at Lofland Park, Seaford. He was 86. Mr. Deeney was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Philadelphia, son of the late Samuel and Matilda Strauss Deeney. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Mr. Deeney was employed as an aircraft mechanic and welder with the Civil Service at Dover Air Force Base for 25 years, retiring in 1980. He was a founder and charter member of the Blue Hen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6483 in Milford. Mr. Deeney was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Milford. She was 53. Mrs. Fitch was born in Columbia, S.C., daughter of Essie Lee Meetze of Columbia, S.C. and the late Thurman Meetze. She was a certified nursing assistant at the Lewes Convalescent Center, until illness forced her retirement in August 2002. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Fitch Jr. in 2000. Hubert of Millsboro died after a year of complications resulting from kidney surgery Monday, June 16, 2003, in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was 61. Mr. Hubert was born in West Grove, Pa., son of the late John and Ahroma Hubert. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was chief financial officer for Coastal Supply Co. in Dagsboro until his illness. Mr. Hubert was an avid fisherman and boater, loving both fresh and saltwater fishing. He was 75. Mr. Jones was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Georgetown, Del., son of the late Charles Coard Jones and Delema Sammons Jones. He worked as a pipe fitter for the DuPont Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1979. He held a plumbing license and a contractor's license for many years, and pursued his dream of farming full-time after he retired from DuPont. He was a devoted family man, a loving husband, father and grandfather, a steadfast friend to many and a well-respected member of the community. Mr. Jones was, for many years, a member of First Baptist Church of Seaford, Del., where he served as a deacon. He was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church of Denton and served as a deacon and head of the building program from the incorporation of the church in 1974 until his death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Calhoun and Doris Willey. 'Jim' Layton, 87 WILMINGTON - Lawson L. "Jim" Layton of Wilmington died, after a long illness, Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the HCR Manor Care Nursing Home in Wilmington. He was 87. Mr. Layton was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Felton, son of the late Wilbur B. and Mary S. (Hurd) Layton. During his childhood, he lived in Harrington. He married Marguerite C. (Messick) Layton Dec. 24, 1939, sharing 63 years together. Mr. Layton was a veteran of World War II, a sergeant (technician 4th class), serving in Italy with Battery A, 338th Field Artillery Battalion, 5th U.S. Army. In September, 1977, he retired from Acme Markets Inc. at Delaware Avenue and Du Pont Street, where he was the meat manager, after 44 years. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed life, working in his garden, playing the organ, carving wood and painting. He had a unique ability to repair most any mechanical device. Mr. Layton was a member of Mid-County Senior Center and attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, James K. Carl Grant Littlefield, 68 WYOMING - Retired U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Carl Grant Littlefield of Wyoming died Wednesday, June 18, 2003 in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 68. Mr. Littlefield was born in Limerick, N.Y., son of the late Alva and Helen (Cooke) Littlefield. He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in April 1973 from Dover Air Force Base, at the rank of technical sergeant. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for Northern Air Cargo in Anchorage, Alaska, for approximately 10 years. Mr. Littlefield enjoyed camping and traveling in his recreational vehicle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Littlefield. She was 94. Mrs. McKnight was born April 20, 1909, in Goldsboro, daughter of the late Charles and Henrietta Hazelton Groce. She attended school in Philadelphia. Mrs. McKnight married William T. McKnight in 1927. They resided in Queens, N.Y., and later in Brooklyn, N.Y., for more than 50 years. She worked as a freelance seamstress while raising her family. Upon Mr. McKnight's retirement, they moved to Ridgely. She worked in the 1960s as a seamstress and made spacesuits for NASA's space program. She owned and operated Bartie's Dressmaking and Alterations in Easton for several years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidering, knitting and flower gardening. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing pinochle and bridge, and she loved the Orioles. Mrs. McKnight was a member of Lockerman United Methodist Church/Groce Chapel, where she was the oldest living member. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Thomas N. McKnight Sr.; and two grandsons. Riley, 69 MILLSBORO - Emerson H. Riley of Millsboro died of complications of cancer Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in his home. He was 69. Mr. Riley was born Sept. 11, 1933, in Wilmington, son of the late Edward James Riley and Elsie Wilson Coulbourne. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on a battleship and crossing the Atlantic Ocean both ways 13 times. Mr. Riley first worked in retail sales for the Sears Store in Wilmington, then for Rollins Leasing Corp. in sales and administration. Following that, he worked in food services at Wilmington Dry Goods at the Tri-State Mall in Claymont. He then owned and operated a bait and tackle and sub shop in Little Creek. After living in Melbourne, Fla., for a time, he returned to Delaware and worked for Bob Raley at Holly Lake Campgrounds. Later, he operated a sub shop at Queen Anne's Pier in Lewes and then, until his retirement, he was the owner and operator of the First Port of Call Sub Shop in Lewes for 23 years. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy Jane (DuBosque) Riley; five stepdaughters, Dorothy Parisi of Wilmington, Barbara Calverese of Newark, Joyce Lockert of Elkton, Md., Patricia Rybicki of Middletown and Linda Oberly of New Castle; two stepsons, Randy Meadows of Laurel and Walter Fox of Claymont; a sister, Norma Rywak of Hinsdale, N.H.; three brothers, Woodrow Riley and Eugene Riley, both of Wilmington, and William F. He was 67. Mr. Wheatley was born July 4, 1935, in Easton, son of the late Earl Wheatley and Edna Altha Lare Wheatley. He had previously worked at Nanticoke Homes as a trim carpenter. He was a barber for more than 25 years. He enjoyed helping others to the best of his ability. He thoroughly enjoyed restoring and working on his cherished antique car. Mr. Wheatley was a member of Bridgeville (Del.) Church of God.
