'Buddy' Archer, 65 GEORGETOWN - Virgil L. "Buddy" Archer of Georgetown died Friday, June 13, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 65. Mr. Archer was born in Dagsboro, son of the late Rev. William T. Archer Sr. and Verma M. Walls Archer. He was a hairdresser for the past 43 years, working in of his home. He also had worked part-time for the last nine years as a hairdresser at the Harbor Healthcare nursing home in Lewes. Mr. Archer was a member of the Delaware Hairdressers Association. He is survived by his companion, Derek J. Hine; a sister, Virginia L. Lathbury of Frankford; and nine nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Union Cemetery, Adams Street, Georgetown. Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Lillian Boddy, 67 MUPRHY, N.C. - Lillian Boddy of Murphy, formerly of Dover, Del., for nearly 40 years, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, in Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home in Murphy, after a long battle with cancer. She was 67. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Margaret Cooperstein; a brother, Donald Cooperstein Sr.; a sister, Margaret Zettlemoyer; and a granddaughter, Mary Joanne McCarthy. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and John Joseph of Murphy and Cynthia Repnyek of Allentown, Pa.; a son, Robert McCarthy of Holmes Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Gretchen, Robert, Roland and Richard; seven great-grandchildren; and eight sisters, Nancy Harvey, Sara Ann Cooperstein, Sandra Huber, Carole Slabik, Loretta Worth, Rita Huber, Linda Arndt and Lorna Auge. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Shillington (Pa.) Church of Christ. William Arndt will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Reading, Pa. Arrangements by Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Charles Edward 'Bus' Jenkins Jr., 58 NEW CASTLE - Charles Edward "Bus" Jenkins Jr. of New Castle, formerly of Concord and Dover, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, in the Arbors Nursing Home in New Castle. He was 58. Mr. Jenkins was a dedicated member of the U.S. Navy, having been awarded an honorable discharge during the Vietnam War due to a permanently disabling war injury. He received the Purple Heart for injuries received Dec. 23, 1969. He also received the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, as well as the Vietnam Service Medal (with three bronze battle stars). For a length of time, he resided in North Carolina, then relocated to Delaware to be closer to his family. When Mr. Jenkins relocated to Delaware in March 2001, he became a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Finchville, Md., and he faithfully attended Williams Chapel Church of Bridgeville, where he and his father sat on the same pew Sunday after Sunday. He loved to praise the Lord and loved his parents and children. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Jenkins Sr. He is survived by his wife, Regina Bolden Jenkins of Hurlock, Md.; his mother, Ida Jenkins of Seaford; two sons, Charles E. Jenkins III of Hurlock and Ivan Waters of Seaford; two daughters, Paulette Jenkins of Blades and Cheryl Jenkins of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Dover, with whom he resided until his health required more than home care; four grandchildren, Ashley Jenkins, Demontrae Jenkins and Sauvoux Quailes, all of Blades, and Kasual Joyner of Dover; two brothers, Robert Lee Jenkins of Salisbury, Md., and Linwood Jenkins of Seaford; three sisters, Myrtle Jenkins and Beatrice Jones, both of Seaford, and Erankie M. Griffin of Bridgeville; and a family that was ever so special and dear to him, the Waters family of Seaford. Harris-Nock Funeral Services, Greenwood. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Dr. Sadie Agnes Singer Keen, 88 EARLVILLE, Md. - Dr. Sadie Agnes Singer Keen of Earlville died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in Christiana Hospital, Christiana, Del. She was 88. Mrs. Keen was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Noblestown, Pa., daughter of the late Walter Singer and Anna Bertha Singer. She was a very educated woman who began her teaching career when she was 20. She was a very gifted teacher who helped many people with learning disabilities as well as kids of all ages to understand and learn whatever it was she was teaching. She would even tutor for anyone, anytime and anywhere they might have been, and even though she was deemed as a demanding individual people loved her. Mrs. Keen was a member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Earlville, where she devoted many hours to the church and teaching Sunday school to the children. She received a master's degree from the University of Delaware, another master's degree from Temple University and her doctorate from Nova University in Florida. She was the first woman to receive a master's degree in reading from the University of Delaware. Throughout her career teaching she received every award for a teacher in the state of Delaware. She was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Taylor Keen, and her brother, Walter Singer. She is survived by her son, Taylor Lee Keen of Earlville; two grandchildren, Taylor Lee Keen II of Maryland and Sharon Jane Keen of Earlville; and a sister, Delmar Poppinger of Imperial, Pa. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Earlville. She was 88. Miss Masten was born in Harrington, daughter of the late Frederick L. Masten and Mabel Wright Masten. She has resided at Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown since May, 1995. She was a graduate of Harrington High School and attended Goldey Beacom Business College in Wilmington. She retired from DuPont Co. in Wilmington in 1978, where she had been a secretary for more than 50 years. Miss Masten was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Wilmington. She is survived by a brother, William L. Masten of Elizabethtown; and two nieces, Patricia Stackhouse of Ellicott City, Md., and Megan Brinegar of Watkinsville, Ga. Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Catherine Whitney Shourds, 84 LINCOLN - Catherine Whitney Shourds of Lincoln died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in her home. She was 84. Mrs. Shourds was born in Cannon, daughter of the late William and Sarah McBride (Wheatley) Whitney. She was a 1937 graduate of Bridgeville High School and attended Goldy Beacom College for two years. She was a secretary at Brown Motor Co., Milford, from 1970-79 and then for Thawley Dodge Chrysler Plymouth from 1979-82. She later worked at Wilson Auction Sales in Lincoln for 17 years before retiring in 1999. She enjoyed reading and listening to Big Band-era music, vacationing with her family and attending the sporting events of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid tennis player and basketball fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan T. Shourds Sr. in 1990; two brothers, Frank and Nelson Whitney; and a sister, Elizabeth Harrington. She is survived by a son, Evan T. Shourds Jr. of Davidsville, Pa.; her daughter, Cathy A. Sheppard and her fiancé, Albert Blanton of Lincoln; and two grandsons, Brian Sheppard of Smyrna and Zachary Shourds of Davidsville. She was 70. Mrs. Tull was a lifelong resident of Caroline County, except for a brief period of residency in Boston while her husband served in the armed forces. She attended North Caroline High School. She was a devoted homemaker. Her most admirable quality was the true contentment and happiness she found in her family. Her faith was her anchor and compass as she journeyed through life. Her practicalities led her to embrace and appreciate the simple pleasures of life. Her humble beginning taught her what was really important. She was very blessed to be part of a big, wonderful family filled with loving parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who always cherished the special ties they shared. She will always be remembered by those who loved and shared time with her. Mrs. Tull was a dedicated and active member of Bloomery Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Ida Liden Passwaters; and five siblings, Ralph Passwaters, Mary Jane Wood, Marie Passwaters, Theodore Passwaters and Gilbert Passwaters. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donald Tull of Denton; two daughters and two sons-in law, Lisa and Carlo Mirabelli of Charlottesville, Va., and Renee and Lance Lockerman of Denton; two grandchildren, Spencer Lockerman and Gabriella Mirabelli; and three sisters, Edna Davis of Preston, Catherine Elliott of Federalsburg and Betty Elliott of Greenwood, Del. Waltman, 76 NEW CASTLE - Lester L. Waltman, of New Castle, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003. Mr. Waltman was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Honeybrook, Pa. He was the youngest of six children born to the late Benjamin Hayes Waltman and Emma Cora (Englerth) Waltman. He moved to the New Castle area in 1945. He began his legacy of hard work as a young man and continued to enjoy being a mechanic throughout his life. His love for "working on cars and lawnmowers" will always be fondly remembered. Called "Uncle Lester" by some and "Walt" by others, he was known for his collection of tools and locks. Mr. Waltman enjoyed being with people and helping others. He enjoyed his pet cats and dogs over the years. He took pleasure in "his java," often drinking up to five cups of coffee at a sitting. He loved music, especially "In the Garden" and "Some Call it Heaven, but I Call it Home". He was an active member at First Baptist Church of Holloway Terrace in New Castle, since his baptism in 1998. He was a faithful member, never missing a service until his recent illness. Lester was always decked out in his "Sunday best" with his trademark hat perched upon his head. Mr. Waltman chose Thelma May Waltman as his bride. They enjoyed 23 years of marriage until her death on Feb. 18, 1995. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel and Harry Waltman; and three sisters, Lillian Jolly, Edna Nuse and Marjorie Pride. He is survived by his sister-in-law and friend, Betty Jackson; his niece, Rose Bradley of Felton; and nieces and nephews, Betty Nuse, Peggy Chubbs, Catherine Peters, Helen Dunlap, Linda Butler, Pat Boley, Bob Nuse, Jim Nuse, Bill Nuse and Reese Nuse, all of the Lancaster, Pa., area; and many beloved great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
