Calloway Services for Ray E. Calloway, 59, of Houston, were held Saturday, Jan. 4, at Lofland Funeral Home, Milford. Mr. Calloway died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. He was born in Bridgeville, son of Mildred Trice Calloway and the late Ray O. Calloway. Mr. Calloway was a 1961 graduate of Felton High School. He was a United States mail contractor for 35 years serving Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Mr. Calloway took great pride in his work and was devoted to the U.S. Postal Service. He also owned and operated R. E. Calloway Transportation Inc. and REC Bus Service Inc. Mr. Calloway was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Milford, the First State Shrine Club, Nur Temple in New Castle, where he had served as past president, and the Union Lodge No. 7 AF '&;' AM of Dover. More than anything, he enjoyed being with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to watch his grandsons race BMX, play baseball, and just spend time with them. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara Ross Calloway; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn Renee and Kenneth D. Coverdale of Milford; two grandsons, Jacob Hunter Coverdale and Garrett William Coverdale; and a sister, Marion Green of Greenwood. Burial was in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Harry P. Carroll Mass of Christian Burial for Harry P. Carroll, 76, of Dover, was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 4, in Holy Cross Church, Dover. Mr. Carroll died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born in Belfonte, Pa, son of the late William J. and Margaret Rosenhoover Carroll. Mr. Carroll was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., and had been employed with Richardson and Associates. He then worked for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, from which he retired in 1992. Mr. Carroll enjoyed gardening, golf, and woodworking. After suffering many seasons along the way, he remained a loyal fan of both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Wagenknecht Carroll of Dover; two sons, Patrick J. Carroll of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Daniel J. Carroll of Dover; four daughters, Catherine M. Jennings of Milford, Robin A. Maddox of Frederica, M. Kelly Light of Carlisle, Pa., and Mary Elizabeth Fleming of Milford; a brother, William J. Graveside services for Nick Carter Chapman, 73, of Dover, were held Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Sudlersville Cemetery, Maryland. Mr. Chapman died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born May 13, 1929, in North Carolina, son of the late Arthur and Ethel Denton Chapman. Mr. Chapman served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring in 1968 as a master sergeant. After his military service, he went to work for the Exxon Co. U.S.A., Baltimore. Mr. Chapman enjoyed playing guitar and singing. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 652 in Millington, Md., and the American Legion Post No. 36 in Chestertown, Md. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dolores S. Chapman of Dover; a sister, Coleen Haynes of Morgantown, N.C.; a brother, Jack Chapman of Asheville, N.C.; a niece, Kathy Chapman of Asheville; and two nephews, Michael Haynes of Raleigh, N.C., and Todd Chapman of Asheville. Ms. Chike was born March 23, 1956, in Kent County, Del., daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Poore Chike. She was an employee of Lexington Home Brands Plants 7 and 12 with 25 years of service. Some of Ms. Chike’s hobbies were painting ceramics, camping, and traveling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Marie Manbeck. Ms. Chike is survived by a sister, Barbara Ann Baker of Frederica; her best friend, Kathy McCulloh of Lexington, N.C.; two godchildren, Melissha Young and Kenny Williams; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Burial was private. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Chief Master Sgt. Fred R. ‘Chief’ Couch, U.S.A.F. (Ret.) Services for Fred R. “Chief” Couch, 55, of Frederica, were held Friday, Jan. 2, in Chapel No. 2 at Dover Air Force Base, Dover. Mr. Couch died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born and raised in Vernon, Conn., son of Viola C. Carter Couch and the late Norman F. Couch. After attending schools in Rockville, Conn., he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967, and made the service his career. He served during the Vietnam War and was stationed in South Vietnam for two years. He traveled all over the world and considered himself fortunate to have worked with all types of personnel, military and civilian, foreign and in the U.S. During his service, he received the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding non-combat achievement, and also was honored with the Air Force Achievement Medal, a citation crediting him with chairing the Top Three and constantly being in the forefront of community activities. While in the Air Force, Mr. Couch was president of the Los Angeles Top Three. After being assigned to Dover Air Force Base in 1991, Mr. Couch made Frederica his home. He retired in March 1994 with 27 years of service and then worked for H '&;' R Block doing client tax services. Mr. Couch most recently worked as a cost analyst for Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. He also volunteered his time there. Mr. Couch was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post No. 2 of Dover. He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1984. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth N. and Claudette Couch of Ellington, Conn.; a sister, Janette Ginger Couch of Concord, N.H.; a nephew, Jamison J. Boucher, and his wife, Kelly of Ellington; and many family members, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Coverdale, 87, of Dover, were held Friday, Jan. 3, in the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale. Mr. Coverdale died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Coverdale retired in 1981 after operating a dairy and grain farm for more than 52 years on Cedar Lane Road, near Middletown. He was a past director for the New Castle County Farm Bureau. He also was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church, Middletown, where he had served as a member of the finance committee and was a trustee of the administrative board. After moving to Dover in 1997, he became a member of the Peoples Church of Dover. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Deamer and Lydia Minner. Mr. Coverdale is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathryn E. Coverdale; two daughters, Dorothy Willoughby of Port Penn and Barbara Rausch of Townsend; a twin brother, Samuel Coverdale of Boyd’s Corner; nine grandchildren and 13 grandchildren. Mr. Dunphy died of natural causes Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in his home. He was born May 26, 1923, in Highland Plantation, Maine. Mr. Dunphy was an U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He met his wife during his military service. He worked as a service repairman for Suburban Propane for approximately 24 years. He also owned and operated the Dunphy’s Bus Service in Dover for 20 years, retiring in 1990. Mr. Dunphy was a member of Christ Memorial Baptist Church of Dover, and taught Sunday school. He had a positive outlook on life and a joke for everyone. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Ethel Bennett Dunphy, Aug. 30, 2001. He is survived by a daughter, Sally Ann Dunphy of Dover; two brothers, Julian Dunphy and Basil Dunphy, both of Highland Plantation, and a sister, Eliza Burbank of Salem, Maine. Mrs. Grzyb died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born July 9, 1935, in Sendai, Japan. She had lived in Dover for more than 35 years. Mrs. Grzyb worked as a seamstress for ILC Industries of Dover in Frederica, where she retired in 1991. She was very active in the Modern Maturity Center of Dover, where she was a member of the Japanese Dancing Group. She also loved to sew and do needlepoint and cook her favorite recipes, but most of all, she loved being with her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Grzyb, July 30, 2002. She is survived by a son, Mark S. Grzyb of Woodside; and a granddaughter, Kristan Lynn Grzyb of Montgomery, Ala. State St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Mr. Hamadock died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born in Elizabeth, Pa., son of the late John and Mary Pundai Hamadock. Mr. Hamadock retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1960 with the rank of master sergeant after 20 years of service. He had served as a jet engine mechanic at Dover Air Force Base. He retired from Civil Service in 1979. He had been a resident of Dover since 1962 and will be remembered as many as a Good Samaritan. He enjoyed his garden and paid close attention to his roses and vegetables. He also enjoyed fishing and bowling. Mr. Hamadock was an avid reader and later listened to books on tape as a result of failing eyesight. In his younger years, he was a bugler and played in his hometown fireman’s band. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Mrs. Hancock died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. Mrs. Hancock was born in Snow Hill, Md., daughter of the late William Henry and Annie P. Barnes Jones. She had worked with Dr. Robert LaMar for many years in Snow Hill, had done clerical work for Fulton’s Broiler Service and was a supervisor and housemother at Brandywine College in Wilmington. Mrs. Hancock was a member of the Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Snow Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Edward T. Brimer in 1968 and Calvin J. Mr. Hartnett died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. He was born June 9, 1938 in Dover, son of the late Robert and Daisy Elizabeth Hartnett. Mr. Hartnett was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and was a school bus driver for 12 years with the Caesar Rodney School District. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Hartnett, in 1992. Hedgebeth died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, in Westminster Retirement Village Health Center, Dover. The Rev. Hedgebeth was born in Gates County, N.C., son of the late Jesse Porter Hedgebeth and Pauline Holland. He was a graduate of Elon College and of Yale University Divinity School, and was ordained in 1942. The Rev. Hedgebeth served in the following churches: First Christian Church, Mebane, N.C., 1938-39; First Congregational Church, Niantic, Conn., 1940-42; as an interim pastor at Plymouth Church, Miami, 1942; Union Congregational Church, Avon Park, Fla., 1942-47; First Congregational Church, Daytona Beach, Fla., 1947-49; First Congregational Church, Dickinson, N.D., 1949-1955; United Church of Bismarck, N.D., 1955-1960; United Church of Christ, Medfield, Mass., 1960-65; United Church of Christ Congregational, Norwell, Mass., 1965-68, and the First Congregational Church, Woburn, Mass., 1968-1973. She was born Jan. 28, 1920, daughter of the late Roland and Lovina Buckle Irwin. Mrs. Hinderer was the only daughter and oldest of six children and lived her early years in Denton, Md. She married Wallace Hinderer on Sept. 16, 1945, and lived on a farm near Woodside for 47 years. Mrs. Hinderer had enjoyed a quiet farm life as a wife and a homemaker, and she was a loving mother who also found great joy in her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years on Sept. 26, 1999. Mrs. Kepfer was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., daughter of the late Thomas and Hazel Lanzeudoen Owens. She settled in Dover in 1967 and worked as a manager for Burger Chef and Purple Cow. She later worked as a secretary for Motorola Communications. Mrs. Kepfer later engaged in childcare for many people over the years. Mrs. Kepfer enjoyed reading, bingo, and crafts, and was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a former member of the Cheswold Ladies Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a volunteer for Neighbor to Neighbor at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital and a hospital volunteer as well. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Kepfer Jr., in 1973; a son, Bruce R. Kepfer; and three brothers, Thomas P., Peter R., and Dennis W. Owens. She also was employed as a keypunch operator with General Foods, and with Suburban Propane, Delaware Department of Transportation and Playtex. She served as a Kent County Republican Committee Person. She retired from Playtex in 1970 after 20 years of service. Mrs. Mitchell was a hard working, dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and found great joy in her love and the time shared with family. She was a member of Willow Grove Church of God. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Harry Wilson of Wyoming and Fay and Ronald Killen of Wyoming; a son and daughter-in- law, Charles and Netta Hays of Albion, Mich.; a sister, Mae Hamilton of Inez, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was born March 13, 1968, in Burgaw, N.C., daughter of Albert Charles and Ann Bradshaw Mobley of Beulaville, N.C. Mrs. Newlin worked as a nursing assistant for Christiana Care at the Wishing Well Center, Camden. She enjoyed spending time with her dogs, Taz and Sampson. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Johnny and Pauline Bradshaw and Albert and Caroline Mobley. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Chris Newlin; a brother and sister-in-law, Andy and Cathy Mobley of Beulaville; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Tina and Chris Bond of Wallace, N.C., and Dina and Anthony Newcomb of Seven Springs, N.C.; and three nieces, Jessica Mobley, Erica Mobley and Brenna Mobley, all of Beulaville. Stayton Graveside services for Grace O. Stayton, 90, of Buckhannon, W. Va., were held Tuesday, Dec. 31, in Evergreen Cemetery in Lumberton. N.J. Mrs. Stayton died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in her home. Mrs. Stayton was born in Delaware, daughter of the late Frederick and Rhoda Donophan. She moved from Magnolia to Burlington, N.J. to live with her son. They then moved to West Virginia where she lived until her death. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace, in 1963; and her husband, Thomas Stayton, in 1983. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis A. and Jacque Stayton; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Farley of Felton. Church, Dover. Mr. Stevenson died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in his home, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Stevenson was born Aug. 23, 1948, in Dover, son of Garrett and Naomi Stevenson of Dover. He attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School and William Henry High School. Mr. Stevenson was employed for years at Webb and Sons Market in Frederica. He was also skilled in landscaping, auto detailing, and carpeting. He always loved doing things for and with his parents, friends, and family. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Mr. Stevenson was a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Dover. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Michael Thomas of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Tina Thomas; a grandchild; three step-grandchildren; two brothers, Gregory Stevenson of Georgetown and Mark Stevenson of Magnolia; seven sisters, Shirlet Harris of Magnolia, Bernadette Hazzard of Greenwood, Sonja Morris of Lincoln, Vera Harris of Star Hill, Victoria Stevenson of Bowers Beach, Wannetta Johnson of Dover, and Ramona Stevenson of Dover. He is also survived by five brothers-in-law: Caleb Harris, Oliver Hazzard, Jack Morris, Donald Harris, and William Johnson Sr.; two uncles, Samuel Stevenson and Jerome Wiltbanks; five aunts, Eliza Woodland, Estella Tribbett, Minnie Yarborough, Elizabeth Stevenson and Mary Wiltbanks; a favorite cousin, Barbara Ann Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews, other cousins and friends. Mrs. Tatman died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. Mrs. Tatman was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Georgetown, daughter of the late James and Della Mae Jefferson. She lived in Dover most of her life, and a short period of time in Milford, when she worked in the nursing department at Milford Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Tatman was preceded in death by a son, Ronald C. Paugh, in 1999. Her daughter, Norma J. Klein, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. She is survived by two sons, William Tatman Jr. of Dover and Barry Tatman of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Mrs. Trainor died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. She was born in New York, daughter of the late George A. and Mary Michkas Kmetz. Mrs. Trainor had several jobs throughout her life but mostly dedicated herself as a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick J. Trainor, in 1988. She is survived by a daughter, with whom she lived, Helen M. McDowell of Dover; a son, Frederick Trainor of Valrico, Fla.; a sister, Helen Spafford of Torrington, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
