Adamo, 84 HARRINGTON - Joseph F. Adamo of Harrington died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. She was 84. Mr. Adamo was born in Bethpage, Long Island, N.Y., son of the late Crispino Adamo and Antoinina Adamo. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II overseas in France and Germany. After serving his country, he opened a nightclub in Farmingdale, Long Island, for a short while until he went into the horse business. Mr. Adamo not only owned harness horses, but he trained and drove them as well. He raced in New York, New Jersey and even into Montreal, Canada. Upon moving to Delaware, Mr. Adamo had a horse-breeding farm on Raughley Hill Road in Harrington. He really loved his horses, and took great pride in them. He could often times be found at Harrington Raceway watching the races and simulcast. Mr. Adamo was also into developing property. He developed Lucky Estates and Scenic Acres. He also built and leased two local day cares. He was always looking for another piece of property to develop. Mr. Adamo also liked to golf and was a very good golfer. Mr. Adamo was a member of Harrington Moose 534, American Legion Post 7 of Harrington, U.S. Trotters Association and a representative for a few years for the New Jersey Standardbred Owners Association. Mr. Adamo will be remembered as a man of his word, and a person who made friends easily. He always was willing to help the 'underdog' and those in need. He was a very loving father and husband who loved his family dearly and was very proud of his wife. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lucille Adamo of Harrington; a son, Christopher J. Adamo of Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Nina A. Eubank of Wake Forest, N.C.; a brother, Barney A. Adamo of Farmingdale, N.Y.; two sisters, Katherine D'Aloisio of Long Island and Rose Sawzak of Lakewood, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was 71. Mrs. Burrow was born March 23, 1931, daughter of the late William and Lillie Mae Brady Miller. She was a waitress for restaurants in the Chestertown area until moving to Tennessee in 1977. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Edward Miller and Albert Franklin Miller; and a sister, Gertrude "Trudy" Tobias. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert W. He was 91. Mr. Callahan was born in Wye Mills. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. Mr. Callahan worked as an electrician in Queen Anne's County and later Kent County, Md. Glover of Felton died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 72. Mr. Glover was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Roanoke, Va., son of the late Algie Glover and Daisy Carr Glover. He served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Berlin Airlift. He retired from McGuire Air Force Base in 1970 and moved to Dover to raise his family. He was a farm program coordinator for the Delaware Department of Labor, retiring in 1995 after 25 years. Mr. Glover enjoyed both salt and fresh water fishing and NASCAR. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eliza H. She was 26. Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 4,1976 in Milford. She was a 1994 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes, where she was active in the band and enjoyed playing the flute. Her biggest hobbies were singing and going to church whenever possible with her father to Faith, Hope and Love Christian Fellowship in Milford, Delaware. She also was a 1999 graduate of Delaware State University, Dover, where she received a B.S. degree in business administration. Everyone that knew her loved her and will truly miss that big, beautiful smile. She was employed at Comcast Cable Co. in New Castle. 'Ted' Layton, 83 HARRINGTON - William E. "Ted" Layton of Harrington died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in his home following a long illness. He was 83. Mr. Layton was born at Mastens Corner, son of the late Linda K. Layton and Edgar John Layton. He graduated from Harrington High School, class of 1938. Later, while attending Goldey College, he was a key member of the soccer, baseball and basketball teams. He used these skills as a coach for organized baseball, basketball and football teams for youth and was instrumental in organizing the Harrington Little League baseball league, serving as coach for many years. Mr. Layton served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a faithful employee of the DuPont Co. in Seaford, retiring in 1981 after 42 years of service. Much of his leisure was spent with sport teams. He enjoyed annual trips to Florida with his wife and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed being at the Moose with fellow members and with friends at his cottage at Big Stone Beach. He was completely devoted to his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Mr. Layton was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since childhood and a member of Harrington Moose Lodge 534 since 1975. He also belonged to American Legion Post 7 for the past 52 years, Harrington Senior Center and was a lifetime member of Harrington Volunteer Fire Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, W. John Layton; and a sister, Madalyn Layton. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, which they celebrated on Sept. 21, Laura Belle Poore Layton of Harrington; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynda Malcolm Anders of Lansdale, Pa.; two grandchildren, Ted Anders, and his wife, Rory, of Bear, and Jenna L. She was 58. Mrs. Murray was born April 5, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., daughter of Granville and Pearl Hearn. She graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1962 and from Greensboro College in 1966. Mrs. Murray was a teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg for 33 years. Her last position was as a second-grade teacher at Elizabeth Lane Elementary School. Her quote to her class: "I hope you are as happy with my teaching as I am teaching you. I hope I have made an impression in your life, for you have certainly had a wonderful influence on mine." Throughout her outstanding career she touched the lives of many students and parents. She was very active and dedicated to her church and her community, all to the glory of God. She often organized and led the children's sermon. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. She was 86. Mrs. Pinder was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Rock Hall, daughter of the late William C. and Ida Lorraine Mench. She worked as a seamstress for Rock Hall Manufacturing for 55 years. She was a former seamstress union representative and union president, and received, from the union, several awards for her outstanding leadership and involvement. She enjoyed sewing and making dresses for her family. She did many of the alterations for the soldiers who formerly served at the Nike base in Tolchester. She also loved flowers. She was very fond of Lady Bird Johnson and Mrs. Johnson's plan to plant flowers along all the interstate highways to brighten our country. Mrs. Pinder was a member of the Daughters of America Chapter 25, where she had served as president and treasurer since 1980. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Mae Clark, Betty Hall, Virginia Clark, Helen Cliff and Carol Gorman; and a daughter, Anne G. Howell. She was 78. Mrs. Taliercio was born Feb. 4, 1924, in New York, daughter of the late Raymond C. and Lena Hodge Dickens. She was a graduate of Odessa Central High School in New York and attended Nazarene College in Idaho. She was a commercial artist. While working with Hasbro Toy Co. in Rhode Island, she designed the cover for the GI Joe action figure. She also worked as a commercial artist for the Tampa Tribune and the St. Petersburg Times in Florida. Mrs. Taliercio was a working pilot and flew with the Civil Air Patrol in Alabama. She loved horses. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Michael Taliercio, in 1972. She is survived by three daughters, Lisa George of Chestertown, Kathleen Wright of Albany, N.Y., and Paula Cain of Dallas; a brother, Raymond Dickens of Ithaca, N.Y.; and two granddaughters, Lee Daniels and Jenni Watters. Mrs. Warner loved cats and especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married June 25, 1933, James Warner, on Jan. 19, 1991; a daughter, Mary Ellen Battin; a sister, Hilda Blondheim; and a nephew she raised, Douglas Lowe. Letters of condolence may be made at www.delmarvaobits.com. --------------------------------------------------------------- * James Howard 'Jim' Whaley, 75 CAMBRIDGE, Md. - James Howard "Jim" Whaley of Cambridge, formerly of Peppers Corner near Millville, Del., died of respiratory failure Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Mallard Bay Rehabilitation Center, Cambridge. He was 75. Mr. Whaley was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Showell, son of the late Thornton Showell and Bessie Whaley Purnell. He attended Gumfarm School in Showell. He quit school in the sixth grade to work in the fields to help his mother provide for his siblings. Reaching adulthood, he married and became a father. He farmed for the late Joseph West and years later for Raymond Bank until he retired in 1991. He was a very hard and conscientious worker. Mr. Whaley enjoyed boxing, pitching horseshoes, wrestling and baseball. He was very competitive. He attended the Temple of Deliverance in Cambridge, with his daughter, Sheila Whaley of Cambridge, until he was physically unable. On Nov. 5, 2002, while hospitalized, he surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Each visit with him, in spite of his illness, left you inspired and encouraged. The peace that rested upon him as he flashed his big smile reassured one that God can and will answer prayer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Anna Bell Smullen Whaley, in 1990; a daughter, Grace Milbourne; a son-in- law, Donald Williams; three grandchildren, Todd and Shannon Whaley and Jaquan Stanley; and five brothers, Charles, John, Clarence, Andrew and Jessie Whaley. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by 17 additional children, 10 sons, James of Whaleyville, Carl of Salisbury, Carlton of Campbelltown, Monzie of Fruitland, Robert of Selbyville, Thomas of Millsboro, Del., Sherron of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Angelo, Howard and Thornton Whaley, all of Georgetown, Del.; seven daughters, Joann Williams, Patricia Kasinath and Felicia Sheppard, all of Seaford, Del., Heidi Brown of Millville, Del., Stephanie Whaley of Rehoboth Beach, Tina Whaley of Georgetown and Sheila Whaley of Cambridge; three daughters-in-law, Evelyn Whaley of Whaleyville, Ann Whaley of Georgetown and Eleanor Whaley of Rehoboth Beach; three sons-in-law, Charles Kasinath and Gerald Sheppard, both of Seaford, and Noah Brown of Millville; four brothers, Preston, William, Norwood and Paul Whaley, all of Berlin; three sisters, Elizabeth Lennard and Emma Foreman, both of Berlin, and Betty Johnson of Dover, Del.; five sisters-in-law, Glendola, Catherine, Ethel and Mary Whaley, all of Berlin, and Helen Harmon of Vienna; a brother-in-law, Orville Smullen of Seattle; two half- brothers, Alton Moore of Bishop and Thornton Showell of Rochester, N.Y.; three half-sisters, Nancy Benson of Sicklerville, N.J., Peggy Johnson of Campbelltown and Frances Williams of Bishop; an uncle, Lee Mumford of Bishop; his stepmother, Beatrice Mumford of Berlin; 87 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Jesus Is Lord Church of Deliverance in Georgetown, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Dr. Bonnie Bigelow will officiate. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Home, Seaford, Del. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Florence (Scott) Williams, 95 DOVER - Florence (Scott) Williams of Dover died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, in the Masonic Home of Delaware. He was 95. Mrs. Williams lived most of her life in Dover. Mrs. Williams was formerly a matron with the Order of Eastern Star in Dover. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter James Williams, in 1999. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Walter F. and Joan Williams of Bethlehem, Pa; a sister, Elsee Scott of Upland, Pa.; three grandsons; and six great grandchildren. Services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, where friends may call a half-hour earlier. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
