Mrs. Black died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Silver Lake Nursing Home, Dover. Mrs. Black was born May 27, 1911, in Sussex County, daughter of the late John and Laura Lamb. She attended school in Viola. Mrs. Black was a domestic worker. She owned and operated a school bus for the Caesar Rodney School District. She attended Bethel Seventh-day Adventist Church, Dover, and sang in the choir. She also was the community leader and a deaconess. In addition to her parents, her husband, Oscar Black; three brothers, Chester, Harold and Calvin Lamb; and a sister, Claudia Gibbs, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Chester and Agnes Lamb and Samuel and Frances Lamb of Dover; three sisters, Estella Smith of Felton, Ethel Moore and Edna Walcot, both of Dover; a brother and a sister-in-law, John and Annabelle Lamb; two granddaughters and their spouses, Doris and John Ruff and Florence and James Kilby; six great-grandchildren; and five great-step- grandchildren. Ellis Sr., 58, of Dover. Mr. Ellis died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Ellis was born Sept. 7, 1944, in Wilmington, son of the late Samuel and Eleanor Moore Ellis. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Ellis was a security guard at Wesley College for many years. Mrs. Fruscione died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in her home. Mrs. Fruscione was born March 30, 1914, in Busselton, Pa. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Fruscione enjoyed crocheting, macramé, oil painting, needlework and crafts. She also owned two horses, which gave her great joy. She liked to do yard work and flower gardening. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and will be remembered as a loving and giving person. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carmelo “Doc” Fruscione. She is survived by a daughter, with whom she lived, Lorraine M. Phillips; a grandson, Walter James “Jimmy” Phillips of Georgetown; three brothers-in-law, Mike Fruscione of Hartly, Angelo Fruscione of New Jersey and Tony Fruscione of Las Vegas; a sister-in-law, Mary Petio, and Mrs. Petio’s husband, Jewels, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and a nephew, Charles Fruscione of Trenton, N.J. Semans Haggerty, 76, of Dover were held Monday, Feb. 24, at Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mrs. Haggerty died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. Mrs. Haggerty was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Theodore and Mary Carroll. She was employed by Playtex for 20 years. After leaving Playtex, she was a seamstress and a homemaker. She enjoyed Little League baseball and other activities with her grandchildren. She also was an avid reader. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Nicholas Semans; her husband of 25 years, Clayton Semans; two sisters, Edna Morris and Ethel Myers, both of Maryland; and her husband of 13 years, William “Dick” Haggerty. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Louis E. and Betsy Semans of Viola; a daughter, with whom she lived, June L. Holden, 64, of Dover were held Monday, Feb. 24, at Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming. Mrs. Holden died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Holden was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Gunvald and Minnie Scura Olsen. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Modern Maturity Center, Dover, until her recent illness caused an early retirement. She enjoyed and loved animals, reading, and arts and crafts. Mrs. Holden was a member of AARP and the Modern Maturity Center, and was a contributor to the North Shore Animal League and the Kent County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as other animal groups. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Holden, on Jan. 31, 2000. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and David Stokes of Shelby, N.C., and Denise and Charles Coker and Deborah Nolette, all of Dover. Division St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Mrs. Johns died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Bayhealth- Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Johns was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Felton, daughter of the late Herbert and Ruth Quail. She lived nearly all her life in Viola and Felton, and will be remembered for her vibrant and magnetic personality. She always had a smile and kind word for those she came in contact with and those who knew her. She will be sorely missed. She worked at Green Giant Foods for nearly 10 years until it closed, and continued working in the domestic field until her health failed. She is survived by her very close personal friend and companion of 17 years, Henery Guinn of Felton; five brothers, Paul and Barrett Quail of Dover, James and Herold Quail of Felton and Theodore Quail of Frederica; four sisters, Dorothy Morris of Camden, Delores LaSalle and Margaret Quail of Felton and Arnetta Brooks of Dover; four aunts, Margaret King of Felton, Elsie Hicks of Star Hill, Louise Conquest of Harrington and Libby Butcher of West Chester, Pa.; an uncle, Leroy Butcher of West Chester; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and her extended family, the Guinn family and friends. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Jordan, Edna E. Services for Edna E. Jordan, 87, of Camden, were held Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. Mrs. Jordan died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Jordan was born July 26, 1915, in Camden, daughter of the late El and Gertrude Pennewell. She is the last descendent of the Pennewell family. She lived most of her early adult years in Harrisburg, Pa., Florida, and Bridgeport, Conn. While in Harrisburg, she married Joseph Jordan. She enjoyed talking and making people laugh, and cooking. While living in Harrisburg, Mrs. Jordan became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, which she faithfully attended and was a dedicated usher. After returning to Delaware, she became a member of Zion A.M.E. Church under the leadership of the Rev. Randall Freeman. She is survived by three nieces and the husband of one, Florence Brown and Harriet Gilmore, both of Dover, and Lawon and James Scott of Camden; two nephews and their wives, Nelson and Jean Driggus of Dover and James and Phyllis Driggus of Camden; a goddaughter, Aleathea Scott; a host of cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews; and three dear friends, Viola Minus Butler, Christine Feliciano and Henry Barr. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * O'Ferrall, James Patrick ‘Pat’ Services for James Patrick “Pat” O'Ferrall, 65, of Marydel, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Md. Mr. O'Ferrall died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. O’Ferrall was born Feb. 10, 1938, in Cambridge, Md., son of Elise O’Ferrall of Arizona and the late James O’Ferrall. He attended school to the eighth grade in Trappe, Md. A voracious reader, he was self-educated through literature. Mr. O’Ferrall was a mechanic, specifically working on trucks. He hosted many bluegrass shows as master of ceremonies, and was a great lover of bluegrass music. He was a life member of the Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association. He was easily recognized by his trademark black derby hat, which he wore proudly. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a special friend, Beverly Clough of Marydel; a son, Shane O’Ferrall of Tennessee; a sister, Lois Baker of Trappe; a brother, Bill O’Ferrall of Texas; two grandchildren, Daly and Kerrie O’Ferrall of Tennessee; and three stepdaughters, Bonnie Clough of Barclay, Lori Clough of Wye Mills, and Penny Reel of Centreville. Remus, 82, of Dover will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Remus died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Remus was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Felton, son of the late Earl and Evelyn Sharp Remus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1935, when he joined the Delaware National Guard. He was later activated into Army service during World War II until 1945, with duties that included mess sergeant, first sergeant and personnel sergeant major. He served in Bora Bora, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal (where he landed with the 1st Marine Division), Mono Island, New Guinea, and Shortland Islands. He was awarded a commendation for Exceptionally Meritorious Conduct. Mr. Remus was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a pillar of the Woodside United Methodist Church for 40 years, a member of the Order of St. Barnabas, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Operating Engineers Local 542 and a past member of the Caesar Rodney Ruritan Club. Mr. Remus loved gardening, raising donkeys and collecting. He was a beloved husband, father and friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Remus, Fred Remus and Edmond Remus; and three sisters, Ora Darling, Bertha Clark and Verna Russ. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Gloria Remus; five stepchildren, Maryann Bryant and her husband, Ralph, of Woodside, Gary Madden and his wife, Lorraine, of Woodside, Bruce Madden and his wife, Mary, of Texas, Nora Childers and her husband, Steve, of Woodside, and Gregory Madden and his wife, Joan, of Hartly. He is also survived by a sister, Jesse Englehart, of Springfield, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Sue Remus, of Dover; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Schirling, 61, of Dover, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier. Mr. Schirling died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Schirling was born April 17, 1941, in Elkton, Md., son of the late Leonard E. and Helen Tarbutton Cole. He worked as an “A operator” for Standard Chlorine, formerly of Delaware City, before retirement. Mr. Schirling’s favorite hobby was fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Truitt Schirling in 1982 and a sister, Anna Bonneville. He is survived by a son, Thomas Michael Hunter, of Oahu, Hawaii; three daughters, Allyson Hunter of Texas, Dottie Hunter of Boston and Michelle Hopper of Smyrna; three sisters, Helen Thompson and Jean Guessford, both of Smyrna, and Darlene Burris, of Townsend; and three grandchildren.
