'Jack' Alfree Sr., 63 GALENA, Md. - John R. "Jack" Alfree Sr. of Galena died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 63. Mr. Alfree was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Wilmington, Del., son of the late Jehu and Alice Boyles Alfree. At age 18, he moved to Galena and began his continuous 45-year employment with Kent Oil, now Alger Oil, in the delivery and dispatch of home heating oil. He loved country line dancing, crabbing and hunting. Mr. Alfree was a 45-year member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Co., holding numerous positions, including 17 years as ambulance captain and two years as fire chief. He also was a member of the Retired Chiefs Association. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joanne Moffett Alfree; a son, John "J.R." Alfree Jr. of South Pasadena, Calif.; two daughters, Terri Coleman of Wilmington and Betsy Kelly of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Kristen Hessey of Hilton Head; and five siblings, Audrey Price of Galena, Annie Bush and Harry Alfree, both of Bear, Del., a twin brother, Jim Alfree of Galena, and Bill Alfree of Clayton. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Galena Funeral home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Galena Cemetery. In honor of past chief Alfree, the family suggests memorials may be offered to the Galena Ambulance Fund, c/o the funeral home. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Emma Mary Atkins, 86 DAGSBORO - Emma Mary Atkins a native of Dagsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Green Valley Terrace Nursing Home, Millsboro. She was 86. Mrs. Atkins was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late John P. Hitchens and Minnie Hudson Hitchens. She operated a fruit stand and sold Christmas wreaths on U.S. 113 outside Dagsboro near her home. She also was formerly employed at the National Cash Register plant in Millsboro, where she was a production line worker. Mrs. Atkins was a member of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the church's United Methodist Women's WSCS. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Atkins, in 1981. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce A. Long of Frankford and Debra S. Brandner of Millsboro; three sons, Thomas M. Atkins and Harvey M. Atkins, both of Millsboro, and Jacob M. Atkins of Frankford; a brother, William Hitchens of Millsboro; three sisters, Dollie Lathbury of Clarksville, Aleine Watson of Berlin, Md., and Bertie Dyson of Smyrna; seven grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. Phyllis Walton will officiate. Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery in Millsboro. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Elberta Lynch Conaway, 93 GEORGETOWN - Elberta Lynch Conaway of Georgetown died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center after a two-month illness. She was 93. A lifelong southern Delaware resident, Mrs. Conaway was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Roxana, daughter of the late Elbert and Olivia Lynch. In 1929, she graduated from the Women's College of the University of Delaware with a degree in teaching. Mrs. Conaway taught in the Georgetown School District until 1931. She greatly enjoyed playing bridge, cooking goodies, which she loved giving to her family and many friends, and living life to the fullest. Involved in her community, Mrs. Conaway was an active member of Wesley Methodist Church for more than 60 years, where she served on the church's board of trustees and as a member of the sunshine class. She also was involved in the Georgetown New Century Club and was an early commissioner for the Georgetown Library. In the past, she also served on the American Field Service Committee, which helped pair foreign students with local families. Along with her civic interest, Mrs. Conaway was a great sports enthusiast. She became one of the charter members of Sussex Pines Country Club and was active in its women's golf program for many years. Mrs. Conaway's participation in golf continued until she was well into her 80s. Her other sports passion was major league baseball. She religiously followed the Orioles, but the Phillies and the Atlanta Braves were also high on her list. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Conaway, in 1959. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Robert Graves of Millsboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Jane Lynch of Seaford; a granddaughter, Jennifer Walter, and her husband, Mark Walter, of Fairfax, Va.; a grandson, Brett Graves, and his wife, Pam Graves, of Lewes; two great-grandsons, Seth Graves and Matthew Brandon Walter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown. Feldman of Middletown, formerly of New Hope, Pa., died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, after a long illness. He was 75. Mr. Feldman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Jack and Dina Feldman. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Feldman worked for 25 years until his retirement from Metropolitan Life. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Inge Diehl; a son, Larry; two daughters, Heide and Karen; a stepdaughter, Susan, and her husband, Will; and two grandsons, Billy and Christopher. Hocker of New Castle died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 40. He is survived his mother, Barbara Hocker; a daughter, Rita Hocker; a brother, Kendall Hocker; a sister, Anita Sedillo; his grandmother, Doris Dukes; and a host of aunts and uncles. Arrangements by McCrery Funeral Home. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Mildred Rust Macklin, 96 GEORGETOWN - Mildred Rust Macklin of Georgetown died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Methodist Manor House, Seaford, where she had resided for the past several years. She was 96. Mrs. Macklin was born in 1906, daughter of the late Frank Rust and Florence Wilson Rust. She was a 1925 graduate of Georgetown High School. After graduation from Pearce Business College in Philadelphia, she was a secretary at Eastern Shore Public Service Co. (now known as Conectiv) in Georgetown. Mrs. Macklin was a member of Sussex Pines Country Club and the Georgetown Historical Society. At the time of her death she was the oldest member of Wesley United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Virden Macklin, in 1983. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Francis Holleger of Milford and Jean and Ernest Peoples of Hockessin; a son and daughter-in-law, Virden R. and Madelyn of Georgetown; five grandchildren, Michael Macklin, Gregory Macklin and Patti Seabolt, all of Georgetown, Mark Peoples of Salisbury, N.C., and David Peoples of Darnestown, Md.; and seven great-grandchildren, Adam Macklin of Bear, Jacob Macklin, Julie Macklin, Cassidy and Kristen Seabolt, all of Georgetown, and Kara and D.J. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Price enjoyed baking, crocheting and playing cards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allen Price; and a brother, Bud Wiltbank. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Elmer Price Sr.; five children and their spouses, Elmer and Lola Price Jr. of Still Pond, Nancy and Lou Grahamer Jr. and James and Deborah Price Sr., all of Betterton, David and Vonnie Price Sr. of Laurel, Del., and Lisa and Dwayne Sewell of Chestertown; four sisters, Mildred Hampton of Church Hill, Esther Meeks of Worton and Martha and Ruth Wiltbank, both of Harrington, Del.; a brother, James Wiltbank of Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
