He was 57. Mr. Taylor was born in Dallastown, Pa., son of Virginia Tiehohl of York, Pa., and the late John Taylor. He had lived in the area for the last 10 years, coming from Howard County, Md. He was a tow truck driver for A-1 Vic's Towing. Mr. Taylor really enjoyed playing pool and being with his family and grandchildren. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Christina Taylor. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joan Taylor of Millsboro; a son, John Taylor of Red Line, Pa.; a daughter, Rhondi Taylor of Oceanside, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Osborne of Georgetown and Robin Brown of Millsboro; a sister, Joann Wolfe of Ringwood, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Alexis Brown and Trent Brown, both of Millsboro. Services will be 7 p.m. Monday in Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Catherine A. Astrella, 67 LONG NECK - Catherine A. Astrella of Long Neck, formerly of Lodi, N.J., died of heart failure Friday, April 25, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 67. Mrs. Astrella was a retired medical laboratory switch board operator. She is survived by her husband, Patrick Astrella, and three sons, Phillip, Robert and Patrick Astrella Jr. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro. Pastor J. Allen Miller will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, Millsboro. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Mamie Regina Dickey, 60 TRAVELERS REST, S.C. - Mamie Regina Dickey of Travelers Rest, formerly of Dover, Del., died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was 60. Mrs. Dickey was born Sept. 23, 1942, daughter of the late John and Modell Grace Reid. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Dickey enjoyed crafts, and crossword puzzles. She helped start REACT, which helped police and fire companies with emergencies in the area. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, David T. Dickey, in 1998 and a special friend, Marian Loper. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Janice A. and David Cooper of Travelers Rest, Dana T. Bennett of Greenville, Karla L. and John Prouse of Magnolia, Del., Mickey and Bill Edwards of Harlty, Del.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace "Bud" and Genice Reid of Archer, Fla.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gayle and Knobby Stone of Greenville and Hendell Lawson of Taylors; eight grandchildren, April Reh of Camden, Del., Will Edwards and Rebecca Edwards, both of Harlty, Del., Daniel Prouse and Tony Prouse, both of Magnolia, Dale and Jennifer Cooper, both of Travelers Rest and Faith Bennett of Greenville, and four special friends, Richard McAdams, Dot Halverson, Dot Ewell and Lorna Blann. Letters of condolence may be sent to traderfh@aol.com. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Ruth Porter Field, 85 STOCKTON, Calif. - Ruth Porter Field of Stockton, formerly of Dover, Del., died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, after a short illness. She was 85. Mrs. Field was born June 8, 1917, in Fayetteville, N.C., the fourth of five children of the late Lemuel Harrison Porter and Minnie Belle Monroe Porter. She studied voice and piano for many years and was singing solos in public by age 7. At age 14, she had her own weekly radio show, singing sacred music. A graduate of Fayetteville High School and Worth Business College of Fayetteville, she became the executive secretary to the commandant of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Ft. Bragg, N.C. Later, she studied at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., where twice she sang under Toscanini in Carnegie Hall. She had been a resident of the Dover, Del. and Wyoming, Del. areas for over 50 years, and performed at hundreds of local weddings, funerals, meetings and public events. She was a community activist, advocating for the arts and education. In addition, she taught piano and voice for 17 years. Mrs. Field was the co-founder with Margaret Storey in 1957 of the Dover (now Delaware) Choral Society. That first year, she went door to door asking merchants for $5 donations to sponsor Handel's "Messiah." Forty singers met weekly in church basements to rehearse. They performed with orchestra and both professional and local soloists, of which she was one, in the Dover Auditorium at Central Middle School. In the 1950s, she helped bring the Community Concert Series to Dover, which featured internationally renowned artists, including pianist Andre Watts, the Baltimore Symphony, and guitarist Andres Segovia. Mrs. Field sang in the Dover Century Club Chorus for many years. She taught at the Dover Kindergarten and first grade music at Caesar Rodney Elementary for two years. When her husband started the Field Construction Co. in 1960, she worked as office secretary and was an officer of the corporation. While living in Dover, Del. and Wyoming, Del., Mrs. Field was involved in civic, church and club work and many community and school activities. She was the second president of the Westminster Retirement Community's Resident Council, a past president of the Wyoming-Camden Round Table Club, twice state music chair and once Kent County vice president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and served in other state, county and local capacities. She was chair of the Kent County Bicentennial Committee. A longtime member of Wyoming United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir, founded the church library, served on many boards and councils, was a member of the Adult Fellowship and held many offices in the United Methodist Women. Among her civic activities were the Caesar Rodney P.T.A., Band Parents' Club and school fund-raisers. She helped to develop the Wyoming Town Park and to start the Wyoming Peach Festival. She traveled widely and read extensively. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, whom she married on Dec. 27, 1941, Earl R. Field, in 1997. She is survived by five children, Virginia Tompkins of Acton, Mass., Russell Field of Newark, Del., Martha Tipton and Gregory Field, both of Stockton, and Warren "Joe" Field of Sparks, Nev.; her sons-in-law, David Tompkins and Richard Tipton; three grandsons, Erin Caves of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Dylan Field of Chapel Hill, N.C., and John Montgomery of Ankeny, Iowa; two siblings, Treva Pendleton of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Herbert L. Porter of Durham, N.C.; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in the Wyoming United Methodist Church on Broad Street in Wyoming, Del. Burial will be private. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy Brown Scholarship Fund, Wyoming United Methodist Church, 112 Broad St., Wyoming, DE 19934 or the scholarship fund of the Wyoming-Camden Round Table Club. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Harriett Virginia Legg, 85 ROCK HALL, Md. - Harriett Virginia Legg of Rock Hall died of heart failure Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown. She was 85. Mrs. Legg was born in Rock Hall, daughter of the late Walter Henry Hague and Margaret Helen Wagner Hague. She owned and operated the Rock Hall Pharmacy for many years, retiring in 1982. She also worked for 40 years as an election official for the town of Rock Hall, working the polling place during election years. Mrs. Legg was very active for years in the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. She also played a very important role in the community by answering phone for the fire company and sounding the alarm and manning the radio at the firehouse before Kent County established a central alarm system. For many years, she was involved in the Diabetes Association of Maryland. Prior to losing her eyesight, she enjoyed reading and crocheting. Mrs. Legg was a life member of the Rock Hall Alumni Association and a member of the Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall. She is survived by three sons, Martin Legg and Edgar H. Legg, both of Rock Hall, and Robert M. Legg of Wardensville, W. Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in the Wesley Cemetery. Lum of Parkesburg, formerly of Middletown, Del. and Millsboro, Del., died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in his home. He was 44. Mr. Lum was born Oct. 12, 1958, in Wilmington, Del., son of Melvin E. Lum and Doris P. Lum. He was a 1976 graduate of Middletown High School, Middletown, Del. He also attended Delaware Technical and Community College, Georgetown, Del. and the Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania. Mr. Lum was a construction superintendent. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Evelyn Lum and Edward and Mabel Pleasanton, and an uncle, B. Eugene Lum. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kevin W. Lum of Harbeson, Del. and Keith E. Lum of Chincoteague, Va.; two nephews, Jeremy and Stephen Lum; two nieces, Jessica and Rachel Lum; five uncles and their families, Rodney and Roger Pleasanton, Jack, Frank, and Patrick Lum; and an aunt, Mary Porter. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro. The Rev. Carl Kunz will officiate. Burial will be private.
