Elzey J. 'Joe' Arledge, 59 WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Col. Elzey J. "Joe" Arledge of Woodbridge died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in Philadelphia, Miss. He was 59. Col. Arledge collapsed of a heart attack while visiting with his family shortly after attending his mother's funeral in Mississippi. Before his retirement in 1996, Col. Arledge was chief of logistics of the 261st Signal Command of the Delaware Army National Guard, headquartered in Dover. In civilian life, he is the longtime deputy chief of the full-time manpower division of the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C., where he was a GS-15. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1965; served on active duty 1966-1968, serving a year in Vietnam; served in the Mississippi Army National Guard, 1972-1978 and in the Delaware National Guard 1978-1996. He was promoted to colonel in 1992. His total military service was 32 years. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other awards. He entered federal civilian service in 1973 and served with distinction for over 29 years. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Woodbridge; two sons, John Arledge of Richmond and Steve Burroughs of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; two grandchildren, Steven and Anna Burroughs; a sister, Betty Sue Arledge; and a brother, James Thomas Arledge, both of Philadelphia. Memorial services will be Tuesday in the Army National Guard Readiness Center, 111 South George Mason Drive, Arlington Hall Station, Arlington. She was 67. Mrs. Fretz was born April 26, 1935 in Townsend, daughter of the late Robert Ozel Cole Sr. and Dorothy McNatt Cole. She worked as a sewing machine operator for Leeds Travelware for several years before retirement and enjoyed hunting, fishing and nature walks. She is survived by her husband, Stanley L. Fretz; two sons, Richard M. and Joseph E. Fretz, both of Clayton; a brother, Robert O. Cole of Dover; a sister, Mona L. Cole of Clayton; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. 'Bill' Goldsborough Jr., 61 PORT ORANGE, Fla. - William G. 'Bill' Goldsborough Jr. of Port Orange, formerly of Dover, Del. and Marydel, Del., died after a lengthy battle with diabetes Monday, March 17, 2003, in Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach. He was 61. Mr. Goldsborough was born in Wilmington, Del., son of the late William G. and Gertrude Greenhaugh Goldsborough. He served his country in the United States Army Reserves where he was a sergeant and drill instructor. He received a letter of commendation in 1966 for his outstanding job performance and excellent training of the USAR recruits. Mr. Goldsborough worked for Dover Trucking Co. for many years and then for Carl King, Inc. as a tanker driver and then a store manager until the time of his disability. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles fan. Because of his love for sports he played on several teams during his high school years at Dover High School and moved on to play with the Philadelphia Phillies farm league in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His love for sports continued in 1963 when he acted in a managerial position for several years for the Dover Little League. He also played on several softball teams all over Kent County. He met and married Rae Charlotte (Markley) in July 1961 and moved to Marydel. He, along with several friends, established the Marydel Little League, one of his greatest accomplishments. He also enjoyed bowling and established the YABA at the Dover Bowl. He took great joy in teaching and watching his children and grandchildren in all their sports activities over the years and continued to participate in softball leagues into his later years until his illness prevented him playing. Mr. Goldsborough was a life member of the Marydel Volunteer Fire Dept., where he held several offices over the years, including president, chief and rescue Captain. He also served as president of the Kent County Fire Chiefs Association and was very active in the Caroline County Volunteer Fireman's Association. He also was a field instructor at the Delaware State Fire School for several years. He belonged to the Marydel Lions Club and was also a third-degree Mason in Temple Lodge 128, Denton, Md. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary William, in 1973; his great aunt and uncle who raised him, Edward and Anne Dunlap; and a sister, Ruth W. Jackson. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rae (Markley) Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, Harry Edward and Katherine "Sam" Louise of Bunnell, Fla. and their children, Marine Lance Cpl. Harry Davis, Taryn Leazah, Shayna Renee, Amber Catherine and Nicole Lynn; a daughter, Sherry Rae Hamm and her fiancé, Richard "Rusty" Ray of Smyrna, Del. and her children, Brandon William, Logan Marae and Ryan Edward; two brothers, Edward Goldsborough of Woodside, Del. and Norman Goldsborough of Dover, Del.; two sisters, Beverely Doescher of Champaign, Ill. and Linda Burchett of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Hutchings, 74 DOVER - Angus B. Hutchings of Dover died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in the hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He was 74. Mr. Hutchings was born Oct. 2, 1928 in St. Johns, Newfoundland. He graduated from Columbia University where he majored in chemistry. Mr. Hutchings retired in 1997 after 30 years as a packaging engineer for American Packaging Company in Philadelphia. He worked out of his office and traveled quite extensively. He moved to Dover in 1990 from Southampton, Pa. He worked the bingo at Elks Post 1903 in Dover and also was a member of Walter L. Fox Post 2 and the American Legion. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Jonathans Landing Golf Club and a past member of Maple Dale Country Club. He was a PIAA swimming official. Mr. Hutchings loved jokes and music as well as computers and the Internet. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jackie Smith Hutchings; two sons, Robert Angus Hutchings of Jacksonville, Fla. and Steven D. and Sandra Hutchings of Newtown, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Elaine and Andrew Sissons of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and a grandson, James Steven Hutchings. 'Ernie' Pennington, 60 MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - E.O. 'Ernie' Pennington of Midwest City, formerly of West Jefferson, N.C., died Wednesday, April 9, 2003. He was 60. Mr. Pennington was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Apple Grove, N.C., son of the late Woodrow and Ruby (Smiley) Pennington. He moved to Delaware in 1961, where he worked for General Motors as an electrician for 27 years before retiring to Ashe County, N.C. Mr. Pennington enjoyed his dog, Cody, hunting, fishing and playing cards with his kids. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon, and a brother, Bartie. Riniker of Lewes died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 83. Mr. Riniker was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Lewes, son of the late Minnie Rickards Riniker and Frank P. Riniker. He was a 1938 Lewes High School graduate and later worked for the DuPont Co. in Seaford and then in the family business known as Riniker's Tavern, a local restaurant, bar and liquor store where he handled all phases of the operation. He then went on to work as a field auditor for Selected Risk Insurance before joining the former Farmers Bank of the State of Delaware in 1959. Over the years, he worked his way through various positions within the bank until his retirement in 1976 from the loans division. Mr. Riniker for many years was a professional freelance photographer and cinematographer, handling several events for the WDEL-TV, Channel 12, and forwarding several news films to WBOC-TV and photos to the Associated Press. In his lifetime, he produced over 4,000 feet of motion picture film for the former Smith Products Company of Lewes and for other local events. Mr. Riniker obtained a pilot's license in 1945 and an amateur radio license with the call letters W3SWC in 1952. He also owned and operated his own boats. He was a musician and could sing and play the saxophone and clarinet. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine Lodge Riniker of Lewes; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay Riniker and Joshua Peirce of Sellersville, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas R. and Cindy Riniker of Millsboro; granddaughters, Donna Wilkins, Lisa Peirce, Kimberly Keller and Melissa Baitinger; grandsons Steven Riniker and Scott Riniker; a stepgrandson, Thomas W. Lynch III; and five great-grandchildren, Samuel, Eva, Eliza and Isaac Wilkins, and Chad Keller. Mr. Roberts was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a POW who was shot down in Germany and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a retired engineer for the Westinghouse Corporation of Linthicum, Md. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Dagsboro Church of Christ, a member of Elks Lodge 2266 of Glen Burnie, Md. a lifetime member and past chaplain of the VFW Mason Dixon Post 7234 at Quillen's Point in Ocean View.
