Mr. Emerson died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was born in Dover, son of the late Clarence Mac and Dorothy Louise Emerson. Mr. Emerson retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1992. He enjoyed the outdoors and had been active in the Adopt-A-Highway program. He is survived by a son, Charles H. Emerson Jr. of Clayton; four brothers, Clarence Mac Emerson Jr. of Bear, Ronald Emerson of Clayton, Roy Emerson of Dover and Earl Emerson of Neshanic Station, N.J.; a sister, Clarice Maxine Emerson of Syracuse, N.Y.; his companion, Deborah Slaughter; and dear friends, Danny and Charlotte Cole. She retired after 30 years of teaching, many of which were spent at schools at Dover Air Force Base. Mrs. Engle was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Engle. Ms. Fisher died of natural causes Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was born June 26, 1959, daughter of Frances Fisher of Dover and the late Carlas Drain. Ms. Fisher loved her family and friends. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an aunt, Thelma Elizabeth Fisher; and her great-aunt, Libby Prattis. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Shana Fisher of Greensboro, Md., and Latonea Fisher of Dover; three sisters, Jacqueline Fisher, Frances Fisher and Martha Fisher, all of Dover; a brother, Edward Fisher of Dover, and two grandchildren, Tyresse Fisher Baynard and Robbieona Fisher of Dover. She was born Aug. 3, 1904, in Star Hill, near Dover, daughter of the late Fletcher and Martha Harris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine sisters and a brother. She is survived by a niece, Jeanette A. Steele of Dover; a nephew, Donald A. Jones of New Castle; and several devoted friends who feel that their lives were enriched by knowing her, Shirley M. Holloway of Dover, Lenora H. Seaborn of Detroit and Fern and Isaac Byrd of Arlington, Va. Arrangements were by Minus Funeral Home, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Edna Rebecca "Betty" Pinder Hill Services for Edna Rebecca “Betty” Pinder Hill, 77, of Dover, were held Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Full Gospel Church, Clayton. Mrs. Hill died after a long illness Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in her home. She was born in Centreville, Md. Mrs. Hill lived on Maryland’s Eastern Shore until 1968, when she moved to Delaware. She had lived in the Dover-Smyrna area ever since. She worked as a foster grandmother at the Major George S. Welch Elementary School on Dover Air Force Base before her retirement in 2001. Strong religious beliefs, the love of her family and a keen sense of humor saw her through life’s trials and tribulations and sustained her in her final days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Kemp Hill Sr., in 1973, and a son, Lawrence “Bucky” Hill Jr., in 1996. She is survived by five daughters, Shelia Lomax and her husband, Jerry of Townsend, Theresa Fisher and her husband, Clem of Camden, Becky Jewell and her husband, Donnie of Centreville, Md., Kristan Adkins and her husband, Frank of Smyrna, and Marchelle Adams and her husband, Rich of Felton. Mrs. Hill is also survived by two sons, James Hill and his wife, Angela of Felton and Clinton “Gene” Hill and his wife, Joy of Hartly; a stepson, Warren Hayes and his wife, Elaine of Piedmont, Okla.; a grandson, Lee Hill, whom she raised, and his fiancée, Apryl Snow of New Castle; six additional grandsons; nine granddaughters; numerous great-grandchildren; a dog, Tinker; and a cat, Pretty Boy. Ingersoll, 59, of Hartly, were held Friday, Nov. 15, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Mr. Ingersoll died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, Philadelphia. He was born Feb. 14, 1943, in Cold Water, Mich., son of the late William and Gladys Ingersoll. Mr. Ingersoll served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1964, and then moved to Delaware, where he worked for 27 years as an engineer for Playtex until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Ingersoll also worked for several years as a civil engineer for the state of Delaware. He was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post No. 2. Mr. Ingersoll enjoyed fishing, woodworking, carpentry and camping. He helped in any way he could when someone was in need of help. He is survived by his wife, Annette L. Renier Mouncy, with whom he resided for 17 years; a son, Bryan Ingersoll of Dover; four daughters, Anita O’Brien of Texas, Donna LaBo of Texas, Jennifer Ingersoll of Hartly, Michelle Corey of Florida; six grandchildren, Sarah, Kaithe, Dustin, Tyler, Haly and Bradley; and three sisters, Orpha Weage, Doris Normandin and Zenith Hilton, all of Michigan. Burial was in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Lois H. Jeffries Services for Lois H. Jeffries, 80, of Dover, were held Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Presbyterian Church of Dover. Mrs. Jeffries died of a heart attack Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born Aug. 10, 1922. Mrs. Jeffries graduated in 1943 from Mansfield State Teachers College, now Mansfield University, with a bachelor of arts degree in music. She taught elementary and middle school levels from 1943 to 1948 and again from 1966 to 1969. On Sept. 11, 1948, she married Robert E. Jeffries. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as an active community member. She directed both youth and adult choirs at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ventnor, N.J., for more than 20 years. Mrs. Jeffries was active in many other church groups including Sunday school, the Women’s Group, Bible study and was chairperson for a major building project. For more than 25 years, she was an active member and officer in the Crescendo Club, a non-profit organization whose mission was the enrichment of the community through outstanding musical performances, educational programs and creative collaboration with other organizations. After retiring in 1988, she moved to Dover, where she joined the Presbyterian Church of Dover. Mrs. Jeffries served as a choir member, Circle leader, and deacon. She was a member of the Central Delaware Camp Gideon Auxiliary and a lifetime member of The Sprig '&;' Twig Club. Mrs. Jeffries mentored elementary students for the Capital School District and volunteered at the Biggs Museum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Jeffries, in 1993; her son, Timothy; four brothers, Donald Heller, Leonard Heller, Lisle Heller and Foster Heller; and a sister, Hester Heller. She is survived by two sons, Theodore E. Jeffries of Dover and Peter R. Jeffries of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Christine M. Cajthaml and her husband, Albert of Camden and Linda Jeffries and her husband, Richard Pilkington of Pottstown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Jennifer and Melissa Cajthaml and John Smolcynski; and two sisters, Rebecca Coleman of Venice, Fla., and Margaret Sellers of Avis, Pa. Mr. Keys died after a lengthy illness Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born July 7, 1931, in Baltimore, son of the late James D. Keys Sr. and Bessie Keys. Mr. Keys was educated at St. Peter’s and worked for more than 25 years as a concrete mason and contractor. He enjoyed talking on his CB radio and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret; and three brothers, William, John and Earl. Mrs. Logan died peacefully after a lengthy illness Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in her home. She was born March 16, 1948, daughter of the late Hiram Carter Sr. and Vivian Thompson Carter. Mrs. Logan received her bachelor of science degree in business education in 1976 and a master of arts degree in education in 1999 from the Delaware State University. She was taught at Middletown High School for 11 years and retired early from the Department of Education in 2001. Mrs. Logan was a loving wife, mother and proud “MeMe.” She always was willing to lend a helping hand to friends and relatives who needed her. She was known for her collection and fondness for Longaberger baskets. She enjoyed life and it showed in her brilliant smile. She was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Dover, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Dover alumnae chapter for 25 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, S. Lowan Pitts; and three brothers, Hiram Carter Jr., Isaac Carter and Ira Carter. She is survived by her husband, Vannie F. McCoy A memorial service for Dr. William W. McCoy, 84, of Dover, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, 118 Commerce St., Smyrna. Mr. McCoy died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Westminster Village Health Center, Dover. He was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Wilmington, son of the late Warren B. and Edna Frazier McCoy. Dr. McCoy was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Signal Corp of the 13th Fighter Command in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the service, he attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, graduating in 1949. Dr. McCoy has his own optometry practice in Dover for more than 35 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna and the Caesar Rodney Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. A past president of the Delaware Optometric Association, he was a lifetime member of the American Optometric Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary Knight McCoy, in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Emery McCoy; two sisters, Dorothy M. He was born April 11, 1929, in Rock Camp, W.V., son of the late Arthur Lee and Opal Willey Stoneking. Mr. Stoneking was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, serving his country for 24 years, until retiring as a senior master sergeant in 1970. After his military service, he worked for Gilpins, where he delivered pharmaceuticals until the company closed in the 1980s. He was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post No. 2 in Dover. Mr. Stoneking enjoyed hunting. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheron Stoneking Warren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Florence Stoneking; two sons, Earl F. Mrs. Ulrich died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore. She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Georgetown, daughter of the late Herman and Nellie Harris Givens. During World War II, while working for the Delaware State Police in Wilmington, she married Robert C. Ulrich, an Air Force lieutenant from California. Mrs. Ulrich loved the worldwide travel that her husband’s career afforded, with tours of duty abroad in Brazil, Portugal, Japan and Germany. She was a gracious hostess, an adventurous cook, a thoughtful friend and loving mother. Mrs. Ulrich was an avid reader all her life and enjoyed her bridge club. She lived her life with great personal style. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, retired Lt. Col. Robert C. Ulrich; and her dear sister, Evelyn Givens Rust. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dan Shaffer of Bozeman, Mont. and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Whiting died of natural causes Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home. He was born June 17, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Miller E. and Anita Harris Whiting. Mr. Whiting owned and operated Howard Furniture. Later, he owned and operated Ethan Allen in Dover. He also previously owned the Kessler '&;' Whiting Appliance Store in Ridgely, Md. He was very active in the early years, establishing Sutton Park in Ridgely. Mr. Whiting held various offices in the Dover Lions Club, Dover Chamber of Commerce and the Ridgely Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen “Kitty” Whiting, in Nov. 1996. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Johnson and her husband, Gordy of North East, Md., and Barbara Heape of Marydel; one brother, Van R. He was born March 23, 1917, in Delaware, son of the late Perry H. and Anna B. Woodall. Mr. Woodall received his early education at the Star Hill and Booker T. Washington schools and furthered his education at Delaware State College. He worked in Philadelphia for many years at Penn Walt before retiring in 1979. He also was a bus driver for the Head Start Program until his health began to fail. Mr. Woodall was married to the former Florence Allen, his wife of 63 years. He was always there for his daughter, Naomi, and three grandchildren, Tanesha, Tracy and Tria, along with his great-granddaughter, Brianna Williams; a son-in-law, Gregory Ruffin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
