Mr. Barnes died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in his home. He was born June 20, 1939, in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Thomas Atlee and Mary Elizabeth McCoy Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a truck driver for the E. Stuart Mitchell Co. in Baltimore. He is survived by four sons, Charles Thomas Barnes Jr., of Hampton Roads, Va., Robert Atlas Barnes of Dover, John Austin Barnes of Newark and Gene M. Barnes of Hampton, Va.; and four grandchildren. Mr. Bowser died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his home. He was born March 25, 1961, in North Carolina, son of Raymond and Mary Ellen Bowser. Mr. Bowser served in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in 1980. He worked as a public record search branch manager for the Hylind Search Company Inc., Dover. He enjoyed gospel, jazz and R'&;'B music. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two close friends, Charlene Rainer of Dover and Jim Hylind of Baltimore, Md. Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Ruth E. Brooke Remembrance services for Ruth E. Brooke, 73, of Dover, were Friday, Oct. 18, at Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mrs. Brooke died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at her home, with her family. She was born April 13, 1929, in Abbeyville, Ala., daughter of the late Thomas and Nettie Hall Palmer. Mrs. Brooke received her education from the local Alabama school system. She was employed with the National Cup Company and in the cafeteria of Dover Air Force Base. She enjoyed her yard and garden, cooking and canning for others and regaling them with her culinary delights. Mrs. Brooke enjoyed fishing with her husband, Roger N. Brooke, to whom she had been married for 45 years. She will be remembered as a loving and caring person. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose and Sarah; five brothers, Thomas, James T., Jack, Robert and Charles; and one grandchild, Melanie. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons and two daughters- in-law, William R. and Rita Price of Brookhaven, Miss., Neil I. Brooke of Seaford, and Robert S. and Leslie Brooke of Dover; and 14 grandchildren, Rachel, Justin, Todd, Erika and Gregory Brooke of Seaford and Shelley, Samuel, Roger, Ryan, Robert, Daniel, Jacob, Olivia and Jeffrey Brooke of Dover. Chippie, 82, of Dover, were held Monday, Oct. 21, in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. Mrs. Chippie died of natural causes Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at age 82, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was the daughter of the late William and Dora Edwards, who had lived in Simpson, Pa. In high school, Mrs. Chippie was known as “Little Mary,” an outstanding student winning various awards, among them an award from the Palmer Method of Handwriting. After high school, she began working for Western Union in New Jersey, where she met her late husband, John G. Chippie. The couple moved to Cheswold, where they raised their family. Mrs. Chippie often assisted in her children’s classrooms and helped with the preparation of church suppers. Her creative side won her an award from the Del-Mar-Va Chicken Festival for her barbecued chicken. She found pleasure in the natural beauty of the world as evidenced by the large and beautiful gardens she and her husband planted each year. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; and three brothers, William T., David J. and John A. Edwards. She is survived by a daughter, Doris A. Isele of Novi, Mich.; four sons, John D. Chippie, Joseph E. Chippie and Thomas W. Chippie, all of Dover, and Michael L. Chippie of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Services with full military honors for Paul Elmer Floyd, 73, of Dover, were held Friday, Oct. 18, in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. Mr. Floyd died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born April 25, 1929, in Middlebury, Ind., son of the late Heber and Mildred Thompson Floyd. Mr. Floyd served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a technical sergeant in 1971. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Floyd; three sons and two daughters-in- law, Paul and JoAnn Floyd of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark and Sherry Floyd of Phoenix, Az., and David Floyd of Columbus, Ohio; two stepdaughters and their husband, Winifred and Robert Talemal of Wyoming and Gwen and Pat Farris of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Wayne and Eva Dixon of Little Creek; a sister, Mary Bill of Orlando, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Dr. Warren Hall Memorial services for Dr. Warren Hall, 99, of Santa Clara, Calif., were held Friday, Oct. 18, in California. Dr. Hall died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Santa Clara. He was born Dec. 23, 1902, in St. Davids, Pa., son of the late S. Warren Hall Jr. and Gertrude Scott Hall. He grew up in Dover. Dr. Hall attended Wesley Institute, now Wesley College, in Dover. After graduation from Swarthmore College in 1927, he earned a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and taught at Hollins and Earlham colleges. In 1934, Dr. Hall married Natalye Colfelt, who preceded him in death in 1974. In 1976, he married Ruth Chaban, who died in 1986. As World War II approached, he went to Syracuse University Medical School and served as a U.S. Army doctor in the Philippines until the end of the war, and then served in Japan’s reconstruction government. Dr. Hall then began a long medical career in several Western states that lasted until 1972. After attending seminary, he was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1974, and volunteered his services at churches in the San Francisco Bay area for many years. Dr. Hall was an avid hiker well into his 90s and a life member of the Sierra Club. In 1995, he became the first Delawarean to make a donation in perpetuity to the Delaware Agricultural Lands Preservation Foundation of the development rights on his farm near Frederica, which had been in the family since the 1700s. He is survived by two daughters, Marlene Ross and Sherry Oppenheim, both of California; two granddaughters, both of California; a niece, Joan Wise of Chestertown, Md.; four nephews, Barry O’Brien of Deland, Fla., Douglas Hall of Nashville, Tenn., Gordon O’Brien of Chatham, N.J., and Thomas Hall of Victoria, B.C., Canada; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. Scotton, 95, of Seaford, formerly of Dover, was held Monday, Oct. 21, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Rev. Curtis A. Dotson officiated the ceremony. Miss Scotton died peacefully of natural causes Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Methodist Manor House, where she had been a resident for the past 20 years. Prior to moving to Seaford, she lived on Elm Terrace in Dover. She was born one of ten children to Lewis and Sally Clark. Miss Scotton had worked for the Delaware Board of Education for many years until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Miss Scotton was active within the circles of the United Methodist Women. Her love for the Lord was an inspiration to her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Sarah Scotton, Ruth Strickland, Evelyn Sylvester, Emma Roe and Hazel Chapin; four brothers, Spencer, Paul, Elwood and John Scotton. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Eva Nailor Scotton and Carolyn Scotton Roe; a brother-in-law, Thomas C. Roe; three nieces; and nine nephews, all whom will miss her love and kind, gentle spirit. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Charles Oliver Smith Remembrance services for Charles Oliver Smith, 70, of Viola, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Smith died of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born Nov. 7, 1931, in Burlington, Vt., son of the late Charles Sr. and Greta Bates Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving his entire enlistment in the fire service. After his enlistment, he went to work at the Robbins Hose Company in Dover as a dispatcher. He then transferred to the City of Dover’s Inspection Department where he served as deputy fire marshal, retiring in 1980. He was also a salesman for Plectron Fire Radios during the 1970s. Mr. Smith was an active member of the Felton Community Fire Co., with 42 years of service. He served in various capacities, including on the ambulance service, as a fire recorder, as a fire historian and as president of the fire company. He was an active member of the Kent County Fire Police Association and served on a number of committees and as first vice president. He was selected as second vice president of the Delaware State Fire Police Association at the 1981 convention. Mr. Smith was a member of the VCF Ruritan Club of Viola, and served on its board of directors. He was also named an honorary member of the Robbins Hose Company. Deeply involved in Nascar, he was the founder of the Richard Petty Mini Museum, where Richard and Kyle Petty were the official ribbon-cutters for the opening ceremony. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diana G. Smith of Viola; three nieces, Lois Condos, Lola Brisson and Lynn Pelli, all of Vermont; two nephews, George and Gary Bergeron, both of Vermont; and a sister-in-law, Doris Creg of Dexter, Mo. Dr. Brown died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born in Media, Pa., son of the late Paul and Florence Brown. Most of his younger years were spent in Newtown Square, Pa. Dr. Brown attended Shenandoah Valley Academy, a boarding secondary school in Virginia, graduating from there in 1948. He completed certification to become a lab and X-ray technician at the Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia, and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After graduating from Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, Mich., in 1959, he earned his medical degree at Loma Linda, Calif., in 1963. Before moving to Delaware in 1974, Dr. Brown practiced in West Chester, Pa., Rochester, Pa., and Miami, Fla. Dr. Brown worked as an emergency room physician for 15 years at Milford Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1989. His many interests including tending his chicken farm, woodworking and fixing things, driving his classic Corvette and flying his airplane. He always appreciated a good laugh and sharing jokes with his many friends, family and associates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 21 years, Eleanor Frances Brown, in 1996. He is survived by his daughters, Pauletta Jean Brown of Durham, N.C., Vivienne Armstrong of Apopka, Fla., and Lynette Fernando of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and five sisters. She moved to Dover in 1985, later moving to Millsboro in 1998. Ms. Coleman worked as executive director of the Central Delaware Division of the Chamber of Commerce. He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late John and Margaret McKeown Comerford. Mr. Comerford was a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a machinist during World War II. Upon his discharge, he was employed for more than 47 years with SKF Ball Bearing Co. of Philadelphia and later moved to King of Prussia, Pa. He retired in 1979, and then moved to the Hartly area. A generous and loving man to those who knew him, Mr. Comerford will be remembered for his love of dancing to the sound of big band music and for a good pinochle game. He was an avid swimmer and enjoyed rowing and bowling. Mr. Comerford was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Marydel, Md., and was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Mr. Gallegos had lived in the Dover area for 21 years, and was employed as an electrician with Primo Electric, Milton. He loved scuba diving, hunting, camping, the beach and surf fishing. He loved and enjoyed his children and his nieces and nephews. Mr. Gallegos was a member of St. Polycarp’s Catholic Church, Smyrna. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, John A. Godwin, 82, of Felton, were held Sunday, Oct. 27, at Berry-Short Funeral Home, Felton. Mr. Godwin died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was the son of the late John Wesley and Louann Hickman Godwin and was a lifelong resident of Felton. Mr. Godwin was employed in production planning for the DuPont Company, Seaford, for 42 years, retiring in 1982. While at DuPont, he was a 21-year member of the Employees Council and had served for a time as its president. Mr. Godwin attended the Felton United Methodist Church. An avid New York Yankees baseball fan, he was active in Felton town baseball teams as a youngster. He had been a Little League team manager from 1957 to 1962. Mr. Godwin enjoyed golf, listening to big band music and gardening. He also collected stamps and big band records. He was a member of the Harrington Senior Center, where he cherished the many friendships made there. Along with his wife of 61 years, Adolphine “Dot” Godwin, he traveled extensively through the United States, Canada and Europe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Sanford Godwin, Jerome Godwin and George Godwin; and a sister, Reba Wagner. Horton died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in his home, with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Huntingdon, Pa., son of the late Paul and Ora Leeder Horton. The Rev. Horton graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in 1948, where he was class president. His first church was in McMechan, W.Va., where he was pastor from 1948 to 1950. Other pastorates were in Washington, Pa., from 1950 to 1960; in Coraopolis, Pa., from 1960 to 1968; in Dover from 1968 to 1971; as an associate minister in Salisbury, Md., from 1971 to 1976; in McConnellstown, Pa., from 1976 to 1984; and in Broad Top, Pa., his home church, from 1984 to 1988. He retired and moved to Quincy, Mass., where he worked as an assistant chief of security from 1988 to 1994. The Rev. Horton was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene, Dover.
