Died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at age 58, in her home. She was a horsewoman, working for Island Arabian Farm near Warwick. Survived by her husband of 43 years, Joseph L. Alexander. Locally survived by a daughter, Rose Mary Mosley of Dover; three sisters, Mary Cole of Pearson's Corner, Avis Knotts of Kenton and Stella McGinnis of Felton; and a brother, Jimmy Lee Snow of Hartly. Died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at age 41, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown, Md. He was a jack-of- all-trades, working with everything from electrical work, carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, auto mechanics and paving. Locally survived by his mother, Ruth Aileen Kramer Elburn, and a sister and brother-in-law, Marsha and David Cahall, all of Dover. Burial was private. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Brevard, Robert "Bobby" –– Smyrna. Died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at age 60, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged in 1967. He was a correctional officer with the Department of Correction in Smyrna for 27 years. Survived by his companion, Catherine Wayman of Smyrna. Locally survived by his former wife, Joan C. Leggins of Dover; a close friend and confidant, Samuel S. Seymour Jr. of Dover; and a godson, Samuel S. Seymour III, of Dover. He worked his entire life on the family farm as a dairy and grain farmer, continuing a family tradition that began in 1876. Survived by his wife of eight years, Melissa, and a daughter, Emma Raye Shockley, age 2. She was born May 28, 1912 in Easton, Md. Mrs. Abbott was married to W. Preston Abbott, who preceded her in death in 1973. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses of Dover. Mrs. Abbott enjoyed gardening and reading. She is survived by a son, Donald Lee Abbott of Laurel; a daughter, Linda Louise Donovan of Dover; and two grandsons, Nicolas Donovan, stationed at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., and Michael Donovan of Dover. Mr. Baynard died of heart failure Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Genesis Eldercare, Silver Lake Center, Dover. He was born Sept. 9, 1909, in Milford. He worked in maintenance at a mobile-home park in Little Heaven, and was a member of Welcome W.F.G.H. Church in Slaughter Neck. He is survived by a sister, Luvenia Tingle of Milford; a stepsister, Rosetta Harmon of Harrington; nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Burial was in Old Hickory Cemetery, Slaughter Neck. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Gwendolyn E. Braxton Funeral services for Gwendolyn E. Braxton, 67, of Dover, were held Monday, Dec. 23, at Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Dover. Ms. Braxton died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was born Nov. 24, 1935, in Connellsville, Pa., daughter of the late Moses and Lucille Braxton. She was the younger of two children. Ms. Braxton received her elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Connellsville. She received her registered nurse degree from Mercy- Douglass Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, graduating first in her class. She received her B.S.N., M.S.N. and an A.B.D. in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following graduation from Mercy-Douglass, she was a medical supervisor and director of nursing. Teaching was a great passion in her life. Ms. Braxton started her teaching career in 1964 as an instructor in medical-surgical nursing at the Villanova University School of Nursing in Philadelphia. In 1966, she became the section chair of the same department. In 1971, she became an instructor in the department of community medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She remained at Penn until she was recruited in 1975 to be an associate professor and founding chair of the department of nursing at Delaware State University, a position she held until 1986. At that time, she became the assistant academic vice-president for instructional support. In 1992, Ms. Braxton was appointed the Title III program coordinator in conjunction with her then-current title. Ms. Braxton became a faithful member of the Whatcoat United Methodist Church in 1976. She served as a member of various committees and organizations including the building fund campaign, the pastor's parish relations committee, the Women's Day Choir, and the Bible study classes. Professionally and socially, Ms. Braxton was a member of several organizations and societies: the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., the Middle Atlantic Regional Nursing Association, the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, the Delaware Nurses Association, the Delaware Lung Association, NAACP, Geriatric Services Inc., the Whatcoat Social Service Agency, Sigma Theta Tau (National Honor Society for Nurses), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She received many appointments, honors, and awards including Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., Nurse of the Year, the Delaware State University Professional Employee of the Year, the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church Woman of Distinction, the Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee, and the Health Care Cost Management Commission. She was also appointed to the Health Care Professional Review Committee by President Bill Clinton and by the Governor of Delaware to the Board of Nursing. She is survived by a brother, Calvin J. Braxton of Dover; an aunt, Addie Lee Oliver of New York City; her cousins, Gloria and Benjamin A. Glascoe of New York City; a godson, Herschel Norman of Texas; friends Delores Brewer and Jeanette Shepherd, both of Philadelphia, Mariko Tapper-Taylor of Dover; and a host of other relatives and friends. Bryant, 82, of Dover, were held Friday, Dec. 20, in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. Mr. Bryant died after a short illness Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Hartly, the youngest son of the late Joseph D. and Armitta Snow Bryant. Mr. Bryant attended Pratt School and graduated with the Caesar Rodney High School class of 1937. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Bryant was a salesman for Matthews Motors in Dover for many years, before being employed with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1983 as manager for the Dover Air Force Base Post Office. After retirement, he sold portable buildings in Frederica and at Spence's Bazaar in Dover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie B. Ross; and three brothers, Howard Bryant, Alva Bryant and Clarence Bryant. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mae Neidig Bryant; a brother, Ralph Bryant of Hartly; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Mrs. Buckley died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born May 21, 1906, in Aurora, W.Va., daughter of the late Alvin Cline and Odessa Ellen Adams Mason. Mrs. Buckley was a loving mother and grandmother, as well as a loving "Nana" to many children. She was a childcare provider for 24 years and greatly enjoyed nurturing and teaching her children. Furthermore, she cherished each family member and treasured the moments spent at family gatherings. Mrs. Buckley was extremely proud of her family members' accomplishments, large or small. She loved talking with others about of all her family's successes; this was her true reward in life. Mrs. Buckley enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzles, sewing, and baking. She was an avid gardener and loved baking bread filled with "special spices." Mrs. Buckley embraced each day, thus appreciating the simpler things in life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Alvey Buckley, in 1961. She is survived by three sons, Larry K. Buckley of Dover; James A. Buckley of Fallings Waters, W.Va.; Harry C. Buckley of Maugansville, W.Va.; a daughter, Edith Ellis of Texas; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Robert Wesley "Robby" Burritt, U.S.A.F. (Ret.) A Mass of Christian Burial for retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Robert Wesley "Robby" Burritt, 49, of Dover, was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 21, at St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, Smyrna. Mr. Burritt died peacefully after a short illness Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1953, in Westfield, Mass., son of Daniel L. Burritt of Smyrna and the late Ann Hatton Burritt. He was a 1972 graduate of Smyrna High School. While in the USAF, Mr. Burritt served tours of duty in Alaska, South Korea, and New Hampshire. His decorations included award of the Meritorious Service Medal and four awards of the Air Force Commendation Medal. He attended the U.S. Air Force First Sergeants Academy and the Noncommissioned Officers Academy, as well as technical training as an instructor of supervisors for on-the-job- training orientation, the U.S. Air Force Supervisor Course, the course on Air Base Ground Defense, and many others. He retired from the Air Force in 1995 after 22 years of service, and was most recently employed by the Delaware Department of Correction as a classification officer. Family was precious to Mr. Burritt, as he demonstrated constantly through his insightfulness and compassionate acts. He also had a reputation as a prankster among family and coworkers. He was greatly loved and respected by his wife and three children, and will be terribly missed. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kim Craig Burritt; a daughter, Erin Burritt of Annapolis, Md.; twin sons, Brandon Burritt of Newark and Matthew Burritt of Dover; three brothers, William Burritt of Chestertown, Md., and Roderick Burritt and David Burritt, both of Smyrna; three sisters, Patricia Moon of Silver Spring, Md., and Theresa Reynolds and Margaret Gonzon, both of Smyrna; and four-legged friends, Sidney, Maggie, Chelsea and Abigail. Arrangements were by Faries Funeral Directors Inc., Smyrna. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Mary Lucile Harper Cooper Services for Mary Lucile Harper Cooper, 82, of Felton, were held Saturday, Dec. 21, in Faith Community Church, Camden. Mrs. Cooper died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born Jan. 25, 1920 in Wray, Ga., daughter of the late John D. and Ella Jowers Harper. Mrs. Cooper was raised in Ocilla, Ga., the third of five children. Later, she moved to Columbia, S.C., where she met and married Evan Cooper of Conshohocken, Pa., on May 28, 1943. Shortly after, Mr. Cooper was shipped off to Africa where he served under Gen. George Patton in the 3rd Armored Division. While her husband was overseas during World War II, Mrs. Cooper was a teletypist and a Red Cross home front volunteer who worked packing first-aid kits. When Mr. Cooper returned home, the couple moved to Felton, where they opened Cooper's Used Farm Machinery in 1950. The couple worked hard at their successful business until Mr. Cooper's death in 1983. She was a founding member of Faith Community Church of Camden, where she and her husband were loyal members for more than 50 years. Mrs. Cooper will always be remembered for her thoughtful and loving grace, sense of humor, and her kind-hearted way with all the love and respect of her friends and family. Her memory always will be treasured by honoring the beauty of her heart, mind, and soul. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Evan Cooper Jr. of Boulder City, Nev., and John C. and Veronica Cooper of Felton; three grandchildren, Mary Ella Cooper and her fiancé, James A. Stewart, both of Camden, Marie Charlotte and Rick Kilhoffer of Dover and John and Joyce Robbins of Glen Burnie, Md.; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Marie Kilhoffer, John Robbins and Zachary Robbins. He moved to the United States in 1960. Mr. Guzman farmed in Delaware and worked for Firestone over the years. He was a member of Maranatha Christian Church, Dover. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Jose; and a daughter, Rosa. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Celia Guzman; five sons, Justo, Radames, Israel, Luis and Alfredo; two daughters, Gladys Guzman and Maria Wallace; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was born in Alabama, son of the late Pearl Hicks Hare. Mr. Hare served three years with the U.S. Marine Corps and 17 years with the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a power plant operator from the City of Dover's electric department. Mr. Hare was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post No. 2 in Dover. He is survived by a son, James T. Hare Jr. of Springfield, Mass.; a daughter, Sherry L. Lyons, 86, of Dover, was celebrated Monday, Dec. 23, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover. Mrs. Lyons died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born in Somerset, Pa., daughter of the late Charles and Mary Welsh. A longtime resident of Dover, Mrs. Lyons was a civil servant and had served as a supervisor of Supply Management Reps. at Dover Air Force base, until her retirement in 1973. She had been a longtime member of Holy Cross Church in Dover. Mrs. Lyons will be missed by her friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Lyons, in 1991. She is survived by a brother, Charles Welsh of Metuchen, N.J.; two sisters, Margaret A. Lutz of Brick, N.J. and Jean A. Neiderheiser of Ligonier, Pa.; and a cousin, Richard Welsh of Downington, Pa. MacFadden, 94, of Camden-Wyoming, were held Monday, Dec. 23, in the Pippin Funeral Home, Camden-Wyoming. Mrs. MacFadden died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in the home of her son, surrounded by her family. She was born April 9, 1908, in Ohio, daughter of the late Robert and Clara Badgley Johnston. Mrs. MacFaddin had a long career in elementary education. She moved to Delaware in 1932 from Carlisle, Ohio, with her late husband and began her teaching career in Frederica. She later moved to the Caesar Rodney School District, retiring from W.B. Simpson Elementary School in 1968. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, needlework and was an avid bridge player. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Richard MacFaddin, on April 3, 1996. She is survived by two sons, Samuel MacFaddin of Camden-Wyoming, with whom she lived for the last eight months, and Thomas MacFaddin of Monroe, La.; a daughter, Sally Ann Davis of Woodbridge, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. Mrs. Painter died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in her home. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, daughter of the late Albert Howard White and Mary Jane Newton. Mrs. Painter worked for security at Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas. She was a homemaker, an assistant manager at Dover Air Force Base Bowling Center and also managed Raceway Liquors in Dover. She truly loved people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Painter, in 2001. She is survived by four sons and a daughter-in-law, Wyman Eugene and Nancy Painter of Clayton, Stanley Earle Painter and Donnie William Painter, both of Camden, and David Wilson Painter of Seaford; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert Howard and Margaret White of Grier, N.C.; a sister, Agnes Phillips of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a great- grandson, Evan Painter. Mrs. Phillips died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Stonegates Retirement Community, Greenville. She was born Oct. 4, 1907, in Dover, daughter of the late J. Frank Starling and Anna May Armstrong. Mrs. Phillips was very fond of Dover and lived most of her life in Delaware. She was a graduate of the University of Delaware. Mrs. Phillips worked in the library at the State House in Dover for a time. She was married to Charles E. Jenkins in 1942, and they made their home in Wyoming until his death in 1953. She married Kenneth A. Phillips in 1969. They enjoyed traveling together and had friends all over the United States. She is survived by a niece, Margaret Peacock Gregory of Newark; a nephew, George B. Wendell Jr. of New Canaan, Conn.; two great-nephews; a great- grandnephew; and a great-grandniece. Mrs. Schuh died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born October 26, 1912, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Stefan and Eva Bertram Possert. Mrs. Schuh was a seamstress for more than 50 years in the Kent County area, and had lived in New York City at one time. Mrs. Schuh loved and cared for animals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rose; two brothers, Stefan and Matthew; and a grandson, Jack J. Schuh. She is survived by son and his wife, Jack J. and Rose Schuh of Marydel; three grandchildren, Diana, and her husband, Mark Weyant of Dover, Eric Schuh of Felton and Scott Schuh of Dover; and a great-grandson, Matthew Jacob Schuh of Roanoke, Va. Wilson, 85, of Wilmington, was held Thursday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. Mr. Wilson died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was born in Dover. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a master sergeant. He retired from General Motors in 1982 after 35 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Thelma E. Wilson; two children, Jeanette W. Campbell and her husband, John F. of Hockessin and Franklin J. Wilson and his wife, Sharon A. of Newark; one sister, Ruth Wheatley of Newark; three grandchildren, Julie, Jeffrey and Megan; and five great-grandchildren.
