Baker Services for Helen W. Baker, 74, of Dover, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior. Mrs. Baker died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Courtland Manor Nursing Home, Dover. She was born 1928 in Louisville, Ky., daughter of the late Emil and Anna Thias Brugge. Her family moved to Lewes when she was 14 years old. Mrs. Baker received a degree in business from Goldey-Beacom College. She was a homemaker and had worked in the Capital School District office as a data processor for five years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lewes, the National Honor Society, and the local antique doll club. Mrs. Baker was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Junior Board of Kent General Hospital. She loved gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and crafts of all kinds, including crocheting and knitting. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Paul B. Baker; three sons, Paul B. Baker Jr. of Dover and his wife, Jo Ann; Ralph A. Baker of Wyoming and his wife, Karen L.; and James B. Baker of Dover; two sisters, Dorothy Loewenthal of Marietta, Ga., and Martha Gregg of Wilmington; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial will be in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934 or a charity of choice. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Ida Mae Benson Services for Ida Mae Benson, 91, of Wyoming, were held Friday, Dec. 6, in First Pilgrim Baptist Church, Camden. Mrs. Benson died following a short illness Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was born May 25, 1911, in Star Hill, daughter of the late Walter and Dorphine Abrams. Mrs. Benson received her education in the Star Hill and Booker T. Washington schools. She previously was employed at Dover Air Force Base and as a midwife. Mrs. Benson was a longtime member of First Borne Philadelphia Church of Christ in Viola and served diligently in various capacities in the church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel Benson Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Thomas M. Harmon Sr.; a grandson, Anthony Benson; a great-grandson, Justin T. Lewis; three sisters, Virginia, Julia and Pauline; and four brothers, Maurice, Ferris, Howard and Walter. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nathan N. and Elizabeth Benson; a sister, Venetta Abrams of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, Samuel Abrams of Dover, and three sisters-in-law, Alice and Dorothy Abrams of Dover and Carrie Abrams of Camden. Mr. Bolognini died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Italy. Mr. Bolognini was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and later worked in the maintenance department of Kraft Foods/General Foods for 37 years. He loved music and played the mandolin. Mr. Bolognini is survived by two sons, Lenny Bolognini and his friend, Kathy of Magnolia and Nathan Bolognini of New Jersey; a daughter, Cathy Bolognini of New Jersey; a sister, Fannie Libbantie of New Jersey; a granddaughter, Christina Bolognini of New Jersey; and six nieces. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Julian L. "Capt. Jukie" Booker Services for Julian L. "Capt. Jukie" Booker, 78, of Bowers Beach, were held Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, with Pastor Bernard Chuhayda officiating. Mr. Booker died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Gadsden, Ala., son of the late Lewis and Nora Smith Booker. Mr. Baker was a boatswain mate in the U.S. Navy, and served aboard the U.S.S. Hollis. He also served with the merchant marine and with the Sun Oil Company. He was as a charter boat captain for many years and was the owner of the charter boat Captain Potter II. Mr. Baker greatly enjoyed fishing and rabbit hunting. He was a member of VFW Post No. 06483, the Delaware Captain's Association and a lifetime member of the Bowers Beach Fire Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Megee L. Booker and a sister, Ruth Martati. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen Fitzwater Booker; a stepson and his wife, Pete and Sue Potter; a grandson, Clifton M. Potter; and a granddaughter Kristin M. Potter, all of Bowers Beach; and a niece, Janie Chike and her family, of Dover. Burial was in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Wilbert Lee Cooper Services for Wilbert Lee Cooper, 70, of New Castle, were held Monday, Dec. 9, at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Cooper died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was born June 26, 1932, in Littleton, Va., son of the late Roger and Annie Cooper. Mr. Cooper attended Sussex County Training School in Waverly, Va., and received his high school diploma in 1951. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in France, Germany, Japan, the South Pacific, Vietnam and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star and three Good Conduct Medals before his retirement in 1971. While Mr. Cooper's tenure as president of the Central Delaware Branch, NAACP lasted from 1972 to 1975, his commitment to social action was life-long, as was his dedication to young people. In an effort to keep teens out of trouble and off the streets, one of his early entrepreneurial ventures was a teen club, The Countdown. Mr. Cooper was one of the original founders of Capital Esquires, Ltd. He resumed his education and received a bachelor of science degree in distributive education in 1976. He was employed as coordinator for the Wilmington Project 70,001 Program from 1976 until 1978, and as coordinator, founded the program newsletter, First Birth. He received his master of arts degree in personnel management from Central Michigan University in 1978. Mr. Cooper found much joy in his second career as a marketing education teacher, which began in 1978 at Vineland High School, Vineland, N.J. During his tenure he was awarded the Southern Regional Marketing Education Teacher and Cumberland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards. Upon retirement in 1999, Mr. Cooper was named Outstanding Marketing Education Coordinator for the state of New Jersey. His most recent educational accomplishment was award of a doctor of philosophy degree in marketing management from Pacific Western University in 2002. Mr. Cooper will be remembered as a helpful friend, mentor, dedicated educator and loving family member. "Bubba," as he was affectionately called by family, loved to travel, enjoyed sports and was an active alumnus. His efforts to recruit students to attend and graduate from Delaware State University were notable. He was a member of the New Jersey and Delaware state education associations, the Southern New Jersey Coordinators and Business Education Associations. He also was a member of the Democratic National Committee, Prudence Lodge No. 6 and Nu Upsilon Chapter, Omega Osi Ohi Fraternity. He was a diligent member of the Delaware State University Alumni Association and the Twilight March Committee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnnie, Roger Thomas and Elmo Cooper; and six sisters, Dicie Baines, Pattie Mae Curtis, Christine Graves, Emma Hill, Arden Peters and Laura Cheeks. He is survived by his wife, Alva; two daughters, Monique Riddick and Regina Cooper-Conley; two sons-in-law, Larry T. Riddick and Paul H. Conley, all of Dover; a son, Michael Jenkins of Waverly; three grandchildren, Aiyana and Ian Harris of Dover and Latonya Jenkins of Waverly. Gelinas, 65, of Marydel, Md., was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Marydel, Md. Mr. Gelinas died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in his home. He was born July 6, 1937, in Hartford, Conn. Mr. Gelinas worked as a power press operator for Bridgeport Tool and Die in Connecticut until 1979. For the past 23 years he had been on disability. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gretchen Gelinas, on Feb. 24, 1986; and his father, Charles Gelinas, on March 12, 2002. She was born June 7, 1938, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, daughter of the late Percy and Margaret Wiggins. Mrs. Harrison was an officer of Citicorp in Long Island, N.Y., for more than 20 years. After retiring in 1993, she and her husband moved to Dover. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and collecting bears. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Gary Harrison of Dover; two sons, William P. Jonathon died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in University of Maryland Shock Trauma, Baltimore. He was born Oct. 20, 1986, in Leesburg, Va., son of Keith Edward Hawes of Hamilton, Va., and Anita Marcinkowski Stephens of Marydel. Jonathon moved to the area three years ago from Sterling, Va. He was a student at North Caroline High School in Denton, Md., and attended Faith Baptist Church in Smyrna. Burial was in Greensboro Cemetery, Greensboro. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Sarah Emory Hevalow A Celebration of Life for Sarah Emory Hevalow, 87, of Dover, was held Saturday, Dec. 7, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Mrs. Hevalow died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Capitol Health Care Services, with her daughter by her side. Mrs. Hevalow was born Aug. 15, 1915, on the family farm on South Bowers Beach, near Frederica, daughter of the late Thomas B. and Estella Grier Emory. She was a true Delaware native, her family having received a land grant in 1684 on the Murderkill River. She retired from the state of Delaware in 1965, after 30 years of service as senior secretary for the Dover Special School District. She had also worked for Hardesty Insurance Co. and as a bookkeeper. Mrs. Hevalow enjoyed reading, her flowers and being a volunteer. As a child, she studied classical piano for 10 years and spent many evenings playing the piano for her daughter. Her favorite composer was Chopin. She enjoyed traveling, and especially loved the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She was a life member of the Junior Board of Kent General Hospital, having served as treasurer and gift-buyer for more than 30 years. Mrs. Hevalow also was a member of the Dover Century Club and the Colonel Haslet Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of the Dover Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonist and held chapter, state and national positions. In 1971, at the urging of her husband, she organized the Dover Ki-Wives Club, the female branch of Kiwanis, where she served as president for many years. She also served on the Ki-Wives International Board, which honored her in 1991 as Ki-Wife of the Year. She served on the United Methodist Church of the Peninsula Conference Commission on Archives and History from 1986 to 1992 for Barratt's Chapel. Mrs. Hevalow was a longtime member of the Walter L. Fox American Legion Post No. 2 in Dover. She served as the treasurer of the Palmer Home for many years, was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Dover, and a member of the Community Singers for many years, always working behind the scenes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1971 by Ralph Hevalow, her husband of 34 years; two brothers, Grier and Reynolds Emory; an infant sister, Mabel; and her beloved sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ellis Emory, who died in June 2000. Even while fighting Alzheimer's disease, Mrs. Hevalow mourned for her dear "sister." Mrs. Hevalow is survived by her daughter, Sallie Hevalow Seger,. and her husband, Eddy Seger of Clayton. Mrs. Seger cared for her mother for the past three years until about eight weeks ago, when Mrs. Hevalow fell and fractured her hip. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Christina Seger and her spouse, Sean McLaughlin of Effort, Pa.; a great-granddaughter, Meghan Sarah McLaughlin; a niece, Joyce Emory Kucek of Dover, who also helped care for her; a nephew, Nelson Emory of Charleston, S.C.; great-nieces and nephews, extended family who helped their friendship and love, the Ed Agwin family of Little Creek, Sigrid Mills and Jean Gruwell, both of Dover; and her companion of seven years, her teacup poodle, Ginger. Holman, 76, of Dover, was held Tuesday Dec. 10, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Mrs. Holman died Saturday Dec. 7, 2002, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. She was born May 24, 1926, in Oakland, Calif., daughter of Josephine E. Gordon Thorpe of Jamestown, Calif., and the late John Leroy Thorpe. Mrs. Holman worked as a seamstress for Leggett's Department store in the Dover Mall for 12 years before retiring. She also worked for the DEMCO company making timers for 15 years. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and doing crafts. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her mother, she is survived by five daughters, Rosemary Nordyke of Carrolton, Ohio, Constance Sue of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Brenda Jo Lendon of Uhrichsville, Ohio, Carol Kilpatrick of Dover and Victoria Ramsey of Leesburg, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. --------------------------------------------------------------- * Clifford Edward Hughes Sr. Funeral services for Clifford Edward Hughes Sr., 85, of Greenwood, were held Saturday, Dec. 7, in Graham A.M.E. Church, Greenwood. Mr. Hughes died after a short illness Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002. He was born Oct. 12, 1917, son of the late William and Sinah Hughes. Mr. Hughes attended Greenwood Elementary School, Seaford High School and Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, in Dover. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, who later worked at General Chemicals in Marcus Hook, Pa., Mervine Poultry in Greenwood, the DuPont plant in Seaford and at Dover Air Force Base, where he worked as a shop carpenter for 25 years until his retirement. He enjoyed a lengthy retirement with family and friends. Mr. Hughes was a prominent member of the Milford Yanks and the Denton Tigers of the Negro League. He is survived by his wife, Cathelene Elizabeth Taylor Hughes; four children and the spouses of three, Clifford Hughes Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Farmington, Harold and Mary Hughes of New Castle, Ellen and Norman Brady of Milford, and Shelita Hughes of New Castle; six grandchildren, Ricky Hughes, Tracy Brady, Leslie Mitchell, Timaris Hughes, Shekita Hughes and Delphane Carter. She was born in Dover, daughter of the late William G. and Gertrude Maude Greenbaugh Goldsborough. Mrs. Jackson worked as an inspector-packer for Playtex Family Products in Dover from December 1975 until her illness forced her into retirement. On June 2, 1991, she married Richard Jackson Sr. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed bowling and bowled in many leagues in Dover. She shared her love of bowling with many children by coaching children's leagues for many years. She loved animals, yard sales and collecting numerous articles as keepsakes for her home. Over the last couple of years, she enjoyed quilting and counting cross-stitch. She loved people and spent much of her time worrying about other people's troubles while overlooking her own. Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Haflingers Association. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Crystal Gieryna of Newport News, Va., Elizabeth Simmons of Marydel and Rita Cannon of Seaford; three sons, Richard Jackson Jr. of Pine Grove, Pa., Charles "Chucky" Baugher of Dover and Richard Bailey of Felton. Mr. Keefer died of complications of cancer Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in his home. He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Robert A. and Henrietta Bowers Keefer. Mr. Keefer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had served in the Vietnam War. He moved to the Dover area in 1971 and had been employed as a building mechanic at Midway Slots in Harrington. A dedicated and loving father, he was an avid reader and model-auto builder who could often be found enjoying a game of darts. Mr. Keefer was a longtime member of the DelVets Club of Dover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Keefer. He is survived by a daughter, Susan Marie Bibb of Bridgeville; two sons, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Michael W. Calvary Church, Exmore, Va. Ms. Major died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in her home. She was born Jan. 15, 1949, in Exmore, daughter of Ruth Major of Dover and Cornish Major of Melfa, Va. She first attended schools in the Northampton County, Va., school system, and later graduated from high school in Felton. After graduation, she entered the Job Corps in West Virginia. Ms. Major was a caring, loving and sharing person who enjoyed church, children and her family. She was a faithful member of Bibleway Church in Dover. In addition to her parents, she is survived by five sisters, including her twin, Joan Hatcher of Dover, Bonnie Harden of Richmond, Va., Juanita Clark and Carolyn Crampton, both of Dover, and Tonya Major of Melfa, and her grandmother, Virginia Major of Brooklyn, N.Y. Ms. Major is also survived by three nieces, Michelle Major and Tina Milbourne, both of Dover, and Dana Crampton of Cincinnati; six nephews, Norris Crampton III, Gravis Chandler and Korey Crampton, all of Dover, David Morrison of Hampton, Va., and Jeremy and Jervon Harden, both of Richmond and a great- niece, Ceirra Major-Collazo of Dover. Mr. Miller died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in his home. He was born May 31, 1927, in Dover, son of the late Eli Miller and Annie Schrock Miller. Mr. Miller was a farmer most his life. He and his brother, Ammon, owned and operated Miller Brothers Saw Mill from 1946 to 1996. He was a Ford man who enjoyed fishing, automobile races, boxing, gardening, driving tractors and watching birds. He really enjoyed life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Miller; a grandson, Jason Williams; and a stepson, Delmer Freeman. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary A. Workman Miller; a daughter, Beverly Williams of Bridgeville; three sons, Leon Miller and Richard Miller, both of Harrington, and Curt Miller of Denton, Md.; two stepsons, J.R. Freeman and Gary Freeman, both of Milford; seven grandchildren; six step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Ammon Miller of Greenwood; and two sisters, Effie Yoder of Greenwood and Esther Chaffinch of Harrington. A visitation for Vivian Junior Sisco, 66, of Dover, was held Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Mr. Sisco died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia. He was born April 17, 1936, in Alton, Mo. son of the late Vivian H. and Helen A. Sisco. Following his retirement from the United States Air Force in 1977, he drove for Boncosky Trucking for 24 years. Mr. Sisco was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post No. 2. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth. He is survived by four sons, Vivian H. "Rocky" Sisco III of Wichita, Kan., Jeffrey Sisco of Wichita, John J.
