Ambruso, Dover. Mr. Schmidt died after a lengthy illness Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 in his home. Mr. Schmidt was born and raised in Camden-Wyoming, the son of the late William and Louise McCommons. Upon graduation from Caesar Rodney High School in 1939, he joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served during WW II as a photographer in Germany and Normandy until his discharge in 1949. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He was a reporter for the Gainesville Daily Sun; did public relations for the Tampa Chamber of Commerce in Florida; a reporter for the Evening Journal in Wilmington, Del.; and was an editor for the Air Force Times. His career took him to Ottawa, Ill., as director of the ASSHO Road Test Project. He and his family relocated to Arlington, Va., where he worked as an information specialist for the Department of Commerce. After resettling in the Dover area, he worked as director of public relations with the General Foods Corporation. His journalism career included being a reporter, writer, news editor and advertising specialist with the Delaware State News. Upon retiring from the Delaware State News, Mr. Schmidt was a writer for the Dover Post Company and also was editor of the Middletown Transcript. He was so well received in Middletown, that the mayor and citizens proclaimed Jan. 6, 1992 “Jim Schmidt Day.” He will be best remembered for his original weekly column titled, “Schmidtsophrenia,” in which he crafted tales of growing up in “Our Town,” Wyoming. The columns later became the content of his current book, titled, “The Best Little Outhouse in Town.” Mr. Schmidt was a well-respected, active member of the community. He was also an active member of Alcoholics Anoymous, where he touched those he met. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Barbour Schmidt of Dover; five children and their spouses, Richard E. and Alma Schmidt of Landenberg, Pa., W. Robert and Christine Schmidt of Broken Arrow, Okla., William James Jr. and Dinny Schmidt of Owasso, Okla., Steven B. and Barbara Schmidt and Kathryn L. Schmidt, all of Dover; and nine grandchildren, N. Kristian, Kimberly, Jeffrey Townsend, Cara, Daniel, Ryan, Stephanie, Aaron, and Rebecca. Arrangements were by the Funeral Home of Michael J. Schultz, 43, of Hartly, was held Thursday, Aug. 2 at Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Schultz died Saturday, July 28 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Schultz was born in 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of Emil and Margaret Davin Schultz of Dover. He attended Caesar Rodney High School and later went on to get his GED in California. He returned to Delaware and attended Delaware Technical '&;' Community College, majoring in human services. He became a drug and alcohol counselor and was then a program director for NET Recovery Center of Delaware. His hobbies included Nascar and NHRA racing, camping, and traveling. Mr. Schultz was preceded in death by his brother, William E. Schultz, formerly of Dover, two weeks ago. In addition to his parents, Mr. Schultz is survived by his wife, Linda McGinnis Schultz of Hartly; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Regina Schultz of Woodside, Barry and Marjory Schultz of Aberdeen, Md.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Donna and Mike Ellis of Margate, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and William Bogetti of Magnolia; five nephews, Brandon and Brian Bogetti, both of Magnolia, Adam Schultz of Woodside, Paul Schultz of Ohio, and Jeremy Schutz of Hartly; and a niece, Kelly Schultz of Woodside. Mr. Gibbs was born in 1908 in Hartly, the son of the late William R. and Clara Gibbs. He was the eldest of 17 siblings, all of whom preceded him in death over the years. He attended Sanfield School near Hartly. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, he went to the aid of his country, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gibbs enjoyed his work, which included farming and construction. For several years, he was employed by the City of Dover. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed raising and caring for his hunting dogs. He is survived by a special, longtime friend, Novella Scott; five nieces; one nephew; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, and friends. Jones of Lebanon Junction, Ky., and the late Dora Jones. He was a driver for Executive Limousine Service in Dover. Mr. Jones’ hobby was restoring and repairing classic cars. She attended Wesley College, the transferred to Goldey-Beacom, where she finished her education. She worked at various companies as a secretary. One of her favorite pastimes was using her computer to play games and research information. Mrs. McWhite will be remembered as a caring individual who dedicated her life to taking care of her family. She had worked for many years for the Topkis Clothing Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Clark was involved in many church ministries and fund-raisers. She also received many certificates and awards for her religious education. Her favorite Scripture was Matthew 25:21, ‘Well, done thou good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord.” Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband of 62 years, Harry E. Mrs. Scuse died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Scuse was born in 1918 on a family farm in Blackbird, the daughter of the late Enoc and S. Mary Walls Lurty. Mrs. Scuse owned and operated a hairdressing business in Middletown for over 15 years. She enjoyed visits by her many friends and neighbors. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Scuse was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Nelson Scuse, in 1998; two sisters, Ruth May Lurty of Dover and Mildred Ingelsbe of Middletown; and a brother, Wells Lurty of Middletown. Mrs. Tuxward was born in 1937 at Pearsons’ Corner in the home where she was raised. She was the daughter of the late Lee and Gladys Wingard Thompson. She retired after working for many years as a bank teller for Mellon Bank, formerly known as the Farmers Bank of the State of Delaware. Mrs. Coppola died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 in Felton. Mrs. Coppola was born in 1937 in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of the late John Mennear and Margaret Mary Mennear. She was employed at the Holiday Inn in Islip, N.Y., for 15 years, retiring in 1995. Mrs. Coppola enjoyed quilting, arts and crafts. She was the former president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Henry James Jones in Medford, N.Y. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Frank J. Coppola Sr., in 2000; and a brother, Bill Mennear, in 1978. Mrs. Coppola is survived by two sons, Frank Coppola Jr. of Felton, and John J. Coppola of Harpers Ferry, W. Va.; two daughters, Joanne M. Mrs. Kurtzberg, formerly of Philadelphia, died of natural causes Friday, Aug. 3, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Kurtzberg was born in 1918 in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Abraham and Mollie Warren Chait. She worked as a manicurist/shampoo girl for Gene’s, a beauty salon in Center City Philadelphia, for 20 years, retiring in 1988. She also worked in a supermarket as a demonstrator and excelled in selling many products. She moved from Philadelphia to Dover in 2000, and resided at Heritage of Dover. Mrs. Kurtzberg enjoyed reading and being sociable, as she loved all people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Kurtzberg, in May 1977. Mrs. Kurtzberg is survived by a son, Murray Kurtzberg of Marietta, Ga.; two daughters, Judith Dougherty of Philadelphia and Rachelle Kaplan of Dover; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Johnson, 42, of Marydel, was held Monday, Aug. 6 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, Dover. Mrs. Johnson died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mrs. Johnson was born in 1958 in Dover, the daughter of Doris Nickerson Blair of Marydel and the late Edward G. “Ebby” Nickerson, in June 2000. She was employed as a claims processor for Aetna U.S. Healthcare. She had previously worked for 15 years as a nurse’s aide for the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna, and at several bakeries in Dover. Her hobbies included baking cakes for family and friends, camping, dancing and watching her son and nephews playing baseball. She especially enjoyed gatherings with her family and friends. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Hartly United Methodist Church and the Hartly Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 23 years, Joseph M. Johnson Jr. of Marydel; a son, Joseph M. She most recently worked for the Frederica Adult Center, where she served as head cook until retirement. Mrs. Perry was an RSVP member of the Frederica Adult Center for many years, and a member and mother of the First Pilgrim Baptist Church of Willow Grove. Mrs. Uffner, formerly of Dover and Philadelphia, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001 at her home in the Heritage at Milford. Mrs. Uffner was born in 1911 in Belgium, the daughter of the late Marc and Louise Fruhmorgen Rotshyld. She received her R.N. degree from Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, N.J., in 1931. She practiced in several hospitals in the Philadelphia area where she lived in the Northeast Section for 40 years. Her last, most rewarding and favorite position was at the Germantown (City of Philadelphia) TB and Well Baby Health Clinic, where she worked for over 10 years. Mrs. Uffner, know as “Mee Maw” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many of her friends, loved children of all ages. During her nine years in the Dover area, she was a volunteer at the Kent General Hospital day care center where being with the infants was her greatest pleasure. Children of any age, including strangers with whom she came in contact in shopping malls, would know that she loved them. She and her husband traveled extensively all over the world and met many people who became close friends. Mrs. Uffner was preceded in death by her husband, Marty Uffner, in 1990; and a granddaughter, Aimee Uffner, in 1981. She is survived by a son, Marty Uffner of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Haines Forbes of Willingboro, N.J.; a sister, Sophia Lerman of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren, Shelly Maloney, Jeff Uffner and Melissa and Heather Forbes; five great-grandchildren, Eric Todd Maloney Jr., Tabethia Maloney, Dylan Cooper and Jeffrey and Morgan Uffner. McGrath A Mass of Christian Burial for Walter T. McGrath, 90, of Dover, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover. Mr. McGrath died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001 in Silver Lake Nursing Center, Dover. Mr. McGrath was born in 1910 in Dorchester, Mass., the son of the late James and Mary Feeley McGrath. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army in Italy. Mr. McGrath moved to Dover with General Foods Corp. in 1964 from Walter Baker Co. He retired in 1975 with 37 years of service. Mr. McGrath was a member of Holy Cross Church; the Modern Maturity Center; General Foods Retirement Group; BPOE 1903; and the Holy Cross Crusaders. After his retirement, he spent many years as a volunteer for United Cerebral Palsy Association, and he could always be found helping others in need. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Catherine Cahill McGrath, in 1988. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one and one-half hours earlier. Mr. Neitzelt died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, along Del. 10 near Dover, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Neitzelt was born in 1976 in Milford. He was a 1994 graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. Mr. Neitzelt worked as a meat cutter for Acme Markets and belonged to the United Food and Commercial workers Union Local 27. Mr. Neitzelt was an automobile enthusiast and enjoyed the time he spent customizing his car. He also enjoyed snow-boarding, playing pool and spending time at the beach. He was a people person and had a great love for life. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Neitzelt, in 2000. Mr. Neitzelt is survived by his mother, Marie Neitzelt of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Barbara Neitzelt of Dover; a nephew, Ethan Neitzelt of Dover; a niece, Hannah Neitzelt of Dover; and his fiancé, Tammy Townsend of Camden. She worked for 20 years as a practical nurse at Kent General Hospital. She had worked earlier as a secretary for Dr. Parate and Dr. Magnus of Richardson '&;' Robbins. She also worked for Playtex. Mrs. Hickman will fondly remembered as “Queen Bee” by many different auction firms, including Spence’s Bazaar in Dover, Dixon’s Furniture of Crumpton, Md., and Wilson’s Auction sales Inc. in Milford and Lincoln, where she was known as the “Grocery Lady.” She also bought and sold household items at Harold Hill’s Auction in Kimblesville, Pa. Mrs. Hickman made many friends over the years she spent at auctions. She also was a landlady for many vacationers in Rehoboth Beach, where she rented out cottages during the summer months. Mrs. Hickman was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover and was president of the Homemaker’s Club for 10 years. She was also a member of the Modern Maturity Center, the Harvest Years Senior Center, and AARP, all in Dover. She was preceded in death by two husbands, William R. Rowe, in 1955, and Leon N. Hickman, in 1988; and a daughter, Betty Rowe Pusey, in 1991. Mrs. Hickman is survived by a grandson, William Harry Pusey of Dover; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Pusey. Ms. Wright died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Ms. Wright was born in 1944 in Kenton, the daughter of Cora M. Wright of Smyrna and the late Robert Wright. She attended Kenton Elementary School, Booker T. Washington and William Henry Comprehensive High School. Ms. Wright moved to Wilmington, where she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. later, she moved home and joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church. She enjoyed serving the Lord. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a niece, Sharon Enita Wright. Mr. Deisem died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001 in Westminster Village Health Center, Dover. Mr. Deisem was born in 1916 in Vandyke, southwest of Townsend, the son of the late Charles and Bertha Shahan Deisem Sr. Mr. Deisem served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a self-employed real-estate broker in Hyattsville, Md., where he had lived from the late 1940s until 1955, when he moved to Wyoming to live with his niece, Laura Rouse. He enjoyed golf and had a deep affection for cats. Mr. Deisem was a Mason and a member of the Mount Harmon Lodge 179 and the Prince George’s Forest Tall Cedars 139 in Hyattsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Deisem, in 1993. Mr. Goerger was born in 1950 in Dover, the son of the late James and Margaret Goerger. He was raised on the family farm near Felton and was a 1968 graduate of Felton High School. Mr. Goerger was employed as a loan officer and the manager of the Colonial Farm Credit office in Suffolk, Va. He was active in Windsor Christian Church as well as the Windsor Ruritan Club in Virginia. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping around his home. Mr. Goerger is survived by his wife, Frances; his two sons, Carter and David Goerger of Virginia; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James Jr. and Carol Goerger of Smithfield, Va., Robert and Sue Goerger of Windsor, Va.
