Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call two hours earlier. Mrs. Loftin died after a long battle with cancer on Sunday, July 29, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Loftin was born in 1937 in Camden, N.J., the daughter of the late Clara M. Wood Tuttle and Carl Tuttle. Prior to her illness, she was employed at Dawson Bus Service Inc. as an aide for the Charlton School. She also was an avid bowler and bingo player. Mrs. Loftin was a member of the Loyal Order of Elks Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Camden-Wyoming Fire Company. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Henry Loftin; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Lisa Loftin of Camden; a daughter, Kim Minnick of Dover; three brothers, Carl Tuttle, Robert Tuttle and George Tuttle, all of New Jersey; an aunt, Laura Tribbett of Wyoming; five grandchildren, Sareana Engelgau of Newark, Jesse Engelgau and Ryan Minnick, both of Dover, and Katie Loftin and Sammy Loftin, both of Camden; and a host of cousins and friends throughout the country. Temple Jr. A memorial service for James C. Temple Jr., 60, of Sun City, Fla., will be held at 8 p.m. today at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Mr. Temple, formerly of Harrington and Felton, died of cancer on Sunday, July 29, 2001 in Milford Center of Genesis Eldercare, Milford. Mr. Temple was born in 1941 in New York, the son of the late James C. Temple Sr. and Sally Francis Temple. He moved to Florida three years ago. He lived for 50 years in Harrington, where he graduated from Harrington High School, and also lived in Felton for four years. Mr. Temple worked for many years as a train master for Conrail. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard and pool. Mr. Temple was a member of Harrington Moose Lodge and a lifelong member of the Harrington Fire Company. He is survived by two daughters, Renee A. Smith of Centreville, Va., and Karen Lapinsky of Dover; and three grandsons, Anthony Lapinsky of Dover and Ryan Smith and Adam Smith, both of Centreville. She was 79 years, one month and three days old. Mrs. Yoder died on Sunday, July 29, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Yoder was born in 1922 in Sumner County, Kan. She was a homemaker and also did quilting. Mrs. Yoder was married to Andrew M. Yoder for 54 years. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1996, leaving her a widow for four years and seven months. She is survived by nine children, four daughters, four sons-in-law, five sons and three daughters-in-law, Fannie and Elmer Mast of Dover, Malinda and Noah E. Yoder of Virginia, Susie and Irvin D. Beachy of Humansville, Mo., Ezra Yoder of the family home in Dover, Jonas Yoder of Wyoming, Levi Yoder and Annie Kanagy, both of Wyoming, Amos Yoder and Rosie Zook, both of Oakland, Md., Verna and Elam Peachey of Dover and Phineas Yoder and Joyce Schrock, both of Dover; 39 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jane Swartzentruber of Dover and Susie J. Mrs. Jackson, formerly of Lakewood, N.J., died after a long illness on Sunday, July 22, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Jackson was born in 1947 in Albany, Ga., the daughter of the late Leroy and Elnora Jackson. At an early age, she and her family relocated to Englishtown, N.J., where she attended the public schools and later attended Freehold Regional High School. Mrs. Jackson worked for the Lakewood Board of Education and was also a nurse's aide at the Lexington Rest Home in Lakewood. She accepted the Lord early in her life. She was a past member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Lakewood, where she was an active member of the Willing Workers Club under the fellowship of the late Rev. Charles Clemmons Sr. She was also a member of the Lady Lydia Chapter #192, Order of the Eastern Star and the Ladies of the Eighties, both of Lakewood. The joy that she brought to all her relatives and friends will remain in their hearts forever. Mrs. Marvel was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Inez Howe of Bakersfield, Calif., and the late Buddy Berry. She was a secretary for Muriel Schwartz in Dover for many years. Recently she was employed at A.C. Moore in Dover as a salesperson, specializing in the miniature doll house department. Mrs. Marvel's favorite hobby was building miniature doll houses, most from scratch. She had a special room in her home that had all the necessary equipment needed to build her miniature houses. She won many ribbons for her houses that she customized, and she enjoyed going to miniature doll house shows. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 14 years, Edward Marvel of Dover; two sons, Mark Goodell of Thornhurse, Pa., and Mike Goodell of Sweetwater, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Karen Ridgley of Hartly; three stepsons, Randall Marvel and Rodney Marvel, both of Kitts Hummock, and Robert Marvel of Wilmington; a brother, John Berry of Bakersfield, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Dickerson died of complications of cancer on Sunday, July 22, 2001 in Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. Mrs. Dickerson was born in 1935 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late Raymond and Vinnie Ruffing. She graduated with a degree in elementary education from Slippery Rock State Teachers College (now University) in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Dickerson worked for two years for the Capital School District as a teacher in the south Dover Elementary School as an educator in four states for a total of nine years. Prior to working in Delaware, she worked as a teacher in Pennsylvania for five years, in New Jersey for one year, and in Maryland for one year. Mrs. Dickerson is survived by her husband of 40 years, Herman Dickerson of Dover; a son, Daniel David Dickerson of Dover; a daughter, Diana Lynn Dickerson of Dover; three brothers, Joe Ruffing of Wildwood, N.J., Donald Ruffing of Tijeras, N.M., and Pete Ruffing of Mercer, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Emma Mae Dickerson and Geordi Raymond Dickerson. Crawford A funeral service for Robert D. Crawford, 81, of Dover, will be private and at the convenience of the family. Mr. Crawford died on Friday, July 20, 2001 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Crawford was born in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., the son of the late Albert and Anna Dana Crawford. He worked as a construction laborer for Local 235, Laborers' International Union of North America, in Westchester County, N.Y., and helped build many of the corporate centers in that area in the 1950s. He also worked for Rochambeau Liquors in Dobbs Ferry, and for the Westchester Country Club as a caddy for many years. He retired in 1985. Lasana, 81, of Smyrna, was held on Friday, July 27 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna. Mr. Lasana died on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 in his home. Mr. Lasana was a WW II veteran. He had been a 55-year resident of Delaware. He was employed by the town of Smyrna for 37 and one-half years as superintendent of the electric department, retiring in 1984. He also worked on his family farm and had owned and operated an electrical-contracting business, Lasana and Son. He enjoyed collecting antiques and old keys. He also enjoyed woodworking and refinishing, traveling, visiting historical sites and dining out. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Lasana was a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary E. Lasana of Smyrna; a son and daughter-in-law, D. Clinton and Melody Lasana of Smyrna; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet L. and Bob Kucher of Smyrna; and four grandchildren, D. Clifford Lasana, Alexandria M. Lasana, Lloyd C. Massey and Mary J. Haner, 61, of Harrington, was held on Monday, July 30 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington, with the Rev. Luis Pacheco officiating. Mrs. Haner died of complications of cancer on Wednesday, July 25 in Milford Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Haner was born in Monroeville, Ind., the daughter of Opal Lord of Fort Wayne, Ind., and the late Ray L. Lennington. She worked as the branch manager for Kellermeyer Building Services. In her spare time, she enjoyed going to the beach, fishing, camping and traveling. She was also an avid gardener. Mrs. Haner belonged to St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Harrington. In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons, Todd Thomas Haner of Laurel, Timothy Ray Haner of Mayflower, Ark., and Terrance A. Haner of Cape May, N.J.; a brother, Terrance R. Lennington of Ft. Wayne; a stepsister, June Volkert of Leo, Ind.; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a devoted and dear frined, Norma O'Banion of Harrington. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington. --------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Robert Ernest Heckman A funeral Mass for Dr. Robert Ernest Heckman, 75, of Dover, was held on Friday, July 27 at Holy Cross Church, Dover. Dr. Heckman died peacefully in his home on July 24, 2001. Dr. Heckman was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. He took advantage of the G.I. Bill and received both a bachelor's degree and a medical degree form Tufts University in Boston, Mass. He began his medical career in Glens Falls, N.Y., where he was a member of Warren Anesthesiology Group. He also served briefly as Chief of Staff of Glens Falls Hospital. A longtime Delaware resident, he had been the Chief of the Anesthesia Department at Kent General Hospital, where he also served as the Director for the Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia Program. After his retirement, he was very active with Delaware Hospice, the American Medical Association, and was on the Board of Trustees of the Biggs Museum in Dover. Mr. Heckman was an avid fresh water fisherman, a lover of art, and an ardent fan of American music, especially standards and jazz. He will be remembered with great love and affection by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and their five children, Martha, Bob, Peter, Emily and Ruth and their spouses; his sister, Barbara Cherry of Georgia; and four grandchildren. --------------------------------------------------------------- Arthur F. Walker Jr. A graveside service for Arthur F. Walker Jr., 78, of Woodside, was held on Monday, July 30 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. Mr. Walker died on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Walker was born in 1922 in Woodside, the son of the late Arthur and Roxy Derby Walker Sr. He was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Navy WW II veteran, where he was a ship's cook. Mr. Walker was a charter member of the Caesar Rodney Ruritan Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel D. Walker. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Virginia Walker of Charlotte, N.C.; four nephews; and a niece. Arrangements were by Trader Funeral Home, Dover. --------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Lewis Everett A funeral service for Robert Lewis Everett, age 83, of near Clayton, was held on Monday, July 30 at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover. Mr. Everett died after a brief illness on Thursday, July 26 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Everett was born in Sept. 18, near Templeville, Md., the son of the late Andrew Fite Everett and Edith Moore Everett. He moved with his family to their Delaware farm between Kenton and Hartly when he was 4 years old, and lived there until his death. Mr. Everett was a 1936 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, where he hestertown, Md. He played varsity baseball for four years, receiving All-Maryland Honors in his sophomore and senior years for outfield and third base. While at the college, he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, and was inducted into the Washington College Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. Following college graduation in 1940, Mr. Everett signed a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics and played in the Eastern Shore League in Federalsburg, Md. He later played for Miami Beach in the Florida East Coast League. Mr. Everett later played independent baseball in Hartly, Sudlersville and Kenton. He also began teaching social studies and coaching at Smyrna High School. During his 30-year tenure there, he coached baseball for 20 years, and led his 1952 basketball team to an undefeated season. In 1983, the Smyrna School District honored him by dedicating the high school baseball field in his name. He retired from coaching in 1967, and from teaching in 1976. After retirement, Mr. Everett remained an active sportsman. He trained standard bred racehorses and English setter bird dogs. He was an avid quail hunter and enjoyed waterfowl hunting. He also enjoyed gardening and was committed to wildlife preservation and habitat. He was a long time member of the Kenton Ruritan Club; the Sudlersville Gun Club; Quail Unlimited; Ducks Unlimited; the Washington College Alumni Association; and was a charter member of the John Bassett Moore Alumni Association. Mr. Everett was a member of the Downs Chapel United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor M. Everett; and a brother, George "Lee" Everett. Mr. Everett is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eve Lynn Everett; a daughter Martha Lynn Everett of Dover; and a son Robert Lewis Everett of Clayton; several nephews; and a niece. Burial was in Sudlersville Cemetery. --------------------------------------------------------------- Kathleen E. 'Kay' Aurillo A funeral service for Kathleen E. "Kay" Aurillo, 72, of Camden, was held on Monday, July 30 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, Dover. Mrs. Aurillo died on Thursday, July 26, 2001 in her home. Mrs. Aurillo was born in 1929 in Mercara Coong, Mysore State, India, the daughter of the late Capt. John B. Bailey and Dorothy Wood Bailey. Her father was in the British Army for 31 years, mainly stationed in India. She went to the Lawrence Royal Military School, and a few years ago, the school celebrated its 154th anniversary. Mrs. Aurillo was one of the first eight Air Hostesses for Air India and had worked for the airline for almost two years. She came to the U.S. in 1951 and traveled with her husband, Ralph Aurillo, during his 20-year naval career. They came to Dover in 1970, when her husband became the Junior High Band Director at the Central Middle School. Mrs. Aurillo was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed by all with whom she came in contact. She enjoyed working in her flower garden all summer and had even worked in the neighbors' flower gardens, planting flowers and pulling weeds. Her favorite pastime was being a member of the Dover Dance Club and dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha. She also earned Life Master in 1989 with the American Contract Bridge League. In addition to her husband, she is also survived by three sons, Brian Aurillo and his wife, Rosa, David P. Aurillo and his wife, Kathy, and Roger W. Aurillo and his friend, Laura Sherry, all of Manassas, Va.; a daughter, Kathryn Aurillo Goss and her husband, Ricky of Houston, Texas; a brother, John F. Bailey and his wife, Bette of London; a sister, Rene Bailey Rhodes and her husband, John of Silver Springs, Md.; eight grandchildren, Henry, Sherry, Angela, Desiree, Wayne, Shane, Ronnie, and Michael; and a great-grandson, Travis. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. --------------------------------------------------------------- Frank Leslie 'Bud' Steele A funeral service for Frank Leslie "Bud" Steele, 48, of Ulysses, Kan., was held on Monday, July 30 at Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, with the Rev. Judy Zingaro officiating. Mr. Steele, formerly of Dover, died instantly from injuries sustained in a horse accident at Grant County Feeders' feedlot on Sunday, July 22, 2001 in Ulysses, Kan. From all indications, Mr. Steele was performing his usual horseback duties when his horse suddenly bucked and bolted, throwing him off, which resulted in the fatal head injury. Mr. Steele was born in 1953 in Clayton, the son of June Cook Warrington of Dover and the late Howard "Babe" Steele. He was a 1971 graduate of Dover High School. Mr. Steele had been a resident of Ulysses since November 2000. He was a pen rider for Grant County Feeders of Ulysses since Nov. 2000. Mr. Steele was an avid animal lover and enjoyed farm life and working with animals. In his early working years, he was active with his family's farm in Dover, known as Steele Wool Farm. He later worked in Virginia until his present employment in Ulysses. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Steele of Front Royal, Va.; a stepson, Andy Stubbs of Joppa, Md.; a girlfriend, Mary Gooden and her children, Karen, David and Doug Sherwood of Woodside; a sister, Robert Jett of Oklahoma; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Katelynn Barron of Marshall, Va. Mrs. Miles died on Thursday, July 26, 2001 in Christiana Care. Mrs. Miles was born in Falmouth, Mass., the daughter of the late Antone and Dominga Pires. She has lived in the Dover area since 1982. Mrs. Miles was most recently employed as an aide at Polytech High School in Woodside. In the past, she worked in food service at Dover Downs, retail sales at Kmart and JCPenney, and as a clerk at Hylton's Market in Camden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Pires. Mr. Dempsey died on Friday, July 27, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Dempsey was born in 1961 in Oil City, Pa., son of the late Robert F. and Mary C. Dempsey. He was a 1979 graduate of Dover High School and had attended the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical '&;' Community College. He worked for 20 years as a pipe layer for Teal Construction and had served in the Army National Guard for four years. Mr. Dempsey was a member of the Church On The Westside in Camden-Wyoming, where he played bass guitar and drums for their contemporary Gospel band. He is survived by his wife, Shelagh Dempsey of Dover; two sons, Robert F. Dempsey III and James Michael Dempsey, both of Smyrna; two stepdaughters, Nicole Ruffin and Natti McGuire, both of Dover; a brother, Michael R. Dempsey of Dover; two sisters, Ann R. Browne, age not disclosed, of Dover, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Whatcoat U.M. Church, 341 Saulsbury Road, Dover. Dr. Browne died on Wednesday, July 18, 2001. Dr. Browne was a native Delawarean who was born in Wilmington and raised by his grandparents in Lewes. He graduated from the high school at Delaware State College for Colored Students, and from Delaware State College in 1947. These were important times, and Dr. Browne frequently and passionately spoke about the meaning of his exposure to inspiring and talented teachers and school mates who were undaunted by adversity and were strong-willed, optimistic and motivated to do well in life. Prior to graduating from Delaware State College, Dr. Browne served as a military policeman in the U.S. Air Force for nearly three years. He was honorably discharged and through the G.I. Bill and scholarship/fellowship grants from the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), he attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work from 1947-1949, receiving a master of social work. This marked the beginning of his career as a professional social worker. Dr. Browne was a settlement house worker in Minneapolis, Minn. from 1949-1954. He moved to New York City, and during the next 36 years, was employed in increasingly higher positions. Eventually he was appointed as an assistant professor to the faculty of Hunter College School of Social Work in New York City. During his tenure at Hunter College, Dr. Browne entered the doctoral program at Adelphi University, where he received a doctor of social welfare degree in 1981. He was promoted to the rank of associate professor from 1981 until he retired in 1990. With great pleasure and commitment, Dr. Browne joined the faculty at Delaware State University in 1990 as an associate professor in the Department of Social Work, retiring in May 2001. Words that best describe Dr. Browne's commitment and attitude toward teaching were articulated by him. He once said, "Teaching is an enduring passion with me." Dr. Browne is survived by his wife, Susan Young Browne of Dover; two sons, Chris Browne of Los Angeles, Calif.; Hugh Browne of New York City; a stepson and his wife, James and Leola Young of Mt.
