BEVILLS TAKES OWN LIFE WITH A SHOTGUN; Despondent and in ill health, Mr. Grover Columbus Bevills commited suicide at the home of his son Chester Bevills, in McCrory about 4:00 a.m. Monday July 4, 1949.He placed a shotgun to his chest and is believed to have pushed the trigger with his toe. Mr. and Mrs. Bevills were awakened by a noise early Monday morning, but did not realize it was the muffled sound of a gun in their home. About an hour later Mr. Bevills arose and found his father's body lying on the back porch. He notified Sheriff Pendergist and coroner F.C Maguire, of Augusta, who responded and said no inquest was necessary. Mr Bevills left a note of four pages in length. Funeral services were conducted by Ed Hubbard at the Woodmen cemetery Tuesday with burial in charge of Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home of McCrory. Mr. Bevills was born in Mississippi Oct. 17, 1877. He was married by Rev. N.E. Gardner at Searcy July 23, 1900, to Miss Mattie Aunspaugh who died several years ago. His age was 71 years, eight months and 17 days. Surviving are three sons, Chester and George Bevills, of McCrory and Vester Bevills of Luxora. Pallbearers were: Alton McCue, Jay Haley, R.C. Campbell, Norman Carter, P. Flower and Nembin Smith.
