Saturday 28 Feb 1874. Page 4. In Fayetteville, on the 11th inst., Mrs. Elvira [Merideth] Jack, wife of Wm. A. Jack. The subject of this notice came from [Greene County] Tennessee with her husband to this county about 16 years ago. She had been suffering for two years with disease of the lungs, which baffled the skill of all the physicians. She died as she had lived, a christian, having early in life embraced religion and joined the Baptist Church. Her faith in Jesus grew stronger as her dying hour grew nearer, and in her last moments expressed her entire willingness to meet her God. All was done that a kind husband, dutiful children and sympathising neighbors could do to render her comfortable in her afflictions until death put an end to her sufferings. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Mayes, Pastor of the Baptist Church. Many friends accompanied her remains to Son's Chapel, six miles east of town, where her former neighbors and friends of that place joined them, and assisted in laying her to rest beside her two children who had preceded her to that beautiful cemetery. She has left a husband, six children, and a large circle of friends to mourn the loss of the good wife, mother and neighbor. Luper, 13 September 1933, Fayetteville Daily Democrat Johnson Man Is Murdered With His Own Gun S.A. Luper Is Shot Twice Through Head at Johnson Tom Williamson Held Tom Williamson of Cave Springs was taken into custody today by Sheriff Hailey Gover for investigation in connection with the death of Sim A. Looper. Williamson is the undivorced husband of a woman with whom Luper has been keeping company, and with whom he was seen at 9 o'clock last night, Sheriff Gover said. No charge has been placed against Williamson and he is held merely for an investigation, officers said. He told Sheriff Gover he and his wife had not lived together for about four years. ------------ S.A. Luper, 78 year old employee of the Johnson Canning factory at Johnson, five miles northwest of here, was found dead in his shack on the factory grounds early today, with two bullets from his own gun fired into the back of his head. An inquest will be held at about 6 o'clock this evening, but officers and County Coroner Glenn Riggs said that he apparently was murdered. While there was some possibility of suicide, Mr. Riggs said the angle of the bullets indicated that Luper could not have fired them. No motive for either suicide or murder could be established today. Luper had not been robbed of the $20 in cash he had on him and his watch, and so far as is known, he had no enemies, officers said. Luper who works at the canning factory during the canning season and serves as caretaker the yearround was found lying on the floor of his shack near the office, by his granddaughter, who came to investigate when he failed to appear on the factory grounds as usual and who fainted when she found the body. Two Shots in Back of Head His head was resting on a pile of sacks and his .32 caliber pistol was lying about a foot away on the left side. One shot went through the back part of the head apparently fired from the left side, but failed to penetrate his skull, and the other was fired into the back of his head and the bullet went toward his left temple. Luper had not been feeling well last night, relatives said, and at about 3 o'clock this morning went to his son's home for a clean shirt and a suitcase. He was in good spirits at the time, it was reported. The night watchman at the canning factory talked to him at about 2 o'clock and he also said he was in good spirits, officers said. The engineer who came to work at the factory at about 5 o'clock said he noticed a light in Luper's house and before he arrived at the factory he heard two shots fired. He did not see anyone leave the house and did not go to Luper's shack since he did not know the shots were fired from there. Officers went to Johnson early this morning to investigate the death, but had few clues in which to work. The gun had been handled before the officers arrived, eliminating any change of fingerprints. Luper's granddaughter, who discovered his death, collapsed at the house before the officers arrived. ------------ Sim A. Luper, 14 September, 1933, Fayetteville Daily Democrat Luper's Death Still Mystery Tom Williamson Is Released When Officers are Convinced He Has Good Alibi Mysterious death of S.A. Luper, 78 year old canning factory employee early yesterday, today remain unsolved by local officers. Tom Williamson was released today after a questioning last night had convinced officers that he knew nothing of the murder. Sheriff Hailey Gover and Coroner Glenn Riggs questioned Williamson at the county jail following the inquest it (sic) which a verdict of "death at the hands of an unknown person" was returned. Wife Testifies Williamson was taken into custody yesterday after officers had learned that Luper had been attentive to Williamsons estranged wife. At the inquest, Mrs. Williamson testified that while she had been going with Luper for the past two years she had been separated from her husband four years, and said as far as she knew he had no objection to her going with Luper. Suicide Theory Discredit Theory of suicide was discredited by a physician who testified at the inquest that while the first shot, which went through the back of Luper's head probably died not kill him, it almost certainly stunned him so that he would have been unable to fire the second shot, which penetrated his brain. W.C. Divens, owner of the factory where Luper worked, said that at a recent conversation with him, Luper had stated that "a person who takes his own life is a coward or crazy." Shots Heard at 5 O'Clock No clue as to who committed the murder early yesterday morning was held by officers. Time of the murder was estimated as about 5 o'clock from testimony of the fireman, who heard the shots as he was on his way to work. Died, at the family residence on Middle Fork of White River, on Jan 27, 1897, Mrs. Rena Maguire, in the 31st year of her age. The death of this good woman was a source of deep grief to the community, and the sad event has left an impression of sorrow upon the bereaved family that many bright days must come and go ere its bitter pangs are dispelled. The deceased was born and raised in Washington County, was married to Wm.A. Maguire on Oct 8, 1883, to whom was born three children, all of them living, the youngest being an infant son unconscious of his great loss. in the meridian of her useful life,- an example for her little children,- she was called away by a summons from the Master whom she was serving to live in a highter and holier sphere. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church, and her last days of afflection and suffering were endured with christian fortitude. One of the links of the household chain has been broken, there is a void in the heart which cannot be filled; yet we would not think earth her only abiding place. She was born for a higher destiny. It's only when the heart looks out beyond the roll of years and the fading of earthly beauty that we can be reconciled to say, "Thy will be done" to the father and dear little chldren. How joyful is the thought that lingers When our loved ones cross death's sea, That when out labors here are ended, With them, we shall ever be. N. M. Special thanks to Barbara A. Lewis for submitting this file! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sulphur City, Arkansas 13 July 1897 Died, of typhoid fever, at her home near Sulphur City, July 9, 1897, Myrtle, daughter of Mrs. H. H. Laymon, aged 13 years. She was small for her age, but was an exceptionally bright child, quick to learn and a close observer of passing events. She was of a pleasant disposition, had a smile and kind word for all, was regular in attendance at church and sabbath school and always had her sabbath school lesson perfect. The second Sabbath in June was the last time she was permitted to attend Sabbath school. A few days later she was taken down with the fever, and suffered for twenty-three days when death came to her relief. All through her sickness she was in her right mind. She bore it all patiently not a murmur escaping her lips, and on the day of her death only a short time before her departure, when surrounded by the family and friends, and without there being a word spoken in regard to her approaching death, she requested her grandfather, Rev. Johnson Crawford, to pray with her. After prayer he asked her if she felt willing to die. She answered: "Ah, yes, I am going to heaven and I want you all to be sure to meet me there." She then prayed a beautiful prayer, entreating the Lord to bless them all and enable them all to live so they would meet her in heaven. She then called the family one by one and exacted from each a promise that they would meet her in heaven, and was particular in requesting that they write two of her uncles, John and Date Crawford, who were away from home, to prepare to meet her in heaven. She continued talking for some time exhorting those who had promised to meet her in heaven to stand firm and prove true to what they had promised. She then called on them to sing. Someone started the old hymn, "Jesus Lover of my Soul." She joined in and sang it through and a short time after her soul took its flight to the realms of eternal joy, and on the next day the remains were followed by the sorrowing family, friends and neighbors to King's Church on the Middle Fork of White River, where Rev. Stone, of the Baptist church, conducted the funeral services, after which the body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery near by. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. We would say to the family and friends, do not mourn as those who have no hope. You will miss Myrtle from the family circle, we will all miss her from the church and Sabbath school, we will never again be permitted to look upon her smiling face or hear her kindly greeting, but let us remember that if we prove true to the promises made her on her death bed and live the life she prayed we might live, we will meet her in the heavenly land where sickness, sorrow, pain and death never come.
