Malcolm Shepherd Knowles Malcolm Shepherd Knowles, 84, of Fayetteville died Nov. 27, 1997, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Livingston, Mont., to Albert Dixon and Marion Straton Knowles. He grew up in Montana and Florida. He was characterized as the father of modern adult education and devised the first broad-based adult-education program for the central YMCA in Chicago, Ill. He was also the first executive director of the Adult Education Association of the United States and became a professor of adult education at Boston University and then a distinguished professor of adult education at North Carolina State University. He received a B.A. degree in history from Harvard University, and an M.A. degree and Ph.D. in adult education from the University of Chicago. He was a Navy veteran. He was a faculty member and mentor for Fielding Institute of Santa Barbara, Calif., and retired from North Carolina State in 1979. He moved to Fayetteville in 1991 and served as adjunct professor of vocational and adult education at the University of Arkansas. He developed a theory of adult learning, which he named andragogy, the adult equivalent to pedagogy. He is the author of 18 books and more than 200 articles on the theory and practice of adult education. His books have been used in virtually every adult-education program in the world. They include Informal Adult Education; The Modern Practice of Adult Education; The Adult Learner; A Neglected Species; Andragogy in Action; and A History of the Adult Education Movement in the U.S. His autobiography, The Making of an Adult Educator, was published in 1989. He was the recipient of numerous distinguished-career awards, including the American Association for Training and Development and the Adult Education Association of the USA. He was also awarded nine honorary doctoral degrees. His theories were taught in industry, governmental agencies, religious institutions, educational institutions and voluntary agencies in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Oceana. Survivors include his wife, Hulda Fornell Knowles of Fayetteville; one son, Eric Stuart Knowles of Fayetteville; one daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Hartl of Orange, Calif.; one sister, Margaret Knowles Sterling of Black Mountain, N.C.; five grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Malcolm S. Davis FAYETTEVILLE - Edwin Allen Davis, 52, of Fayetteville died Dec. 2, 1997, at his home. Arrangements will be announced by Nelson's Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Margaret Hatcher EUREKA SPRINGS - Margaret Fanning Hatcher, 52, of Eureka Springs died Nov. 29., 1997, at Fayetteville. She was born Feb. 14, 1945, in Berryville to Floyd W. and Agnes Weems Fanning. She was a bookkeeper. She was preceded in death by two brothers; one sister. Survivors include her husband, Arthur Hatcher of the home, to whom she was married Oct. 3, 1965; one son, Michael Hatcher of Eureka Springs; two daughters, Lisa Vanzant of Golden, Mo., and Amy Stephenson of Fayetteville; two brothers, Wayne Fanning of Green Forest and Jimmie Fanning of Wichita, Kan.; three sisters, Thelma Currie of Bloomington, Calif., Edna Dishroon and Geraldean Darity, both of Green Forest; seven grandchildren. Garrett SILOAM SPRINGS - Dollie Pilkington Garrett, 85, of Siloam Springs died Dec. 1, 1997, at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Ponca City, Okla., to Frank and Mabel Potter Pilkington. She was a longtime resident of Siloam Springs. She was instrumental in beginning the lunch-room program in the local school system and was a graduate of Siloam Springs High School. She was a member of Siloam Springs Arts Club, the PTA, and the First Baptist Church in Siloam Springs. She was involved in retail sales at Oklahoma Tire and Supply, Garrett Coaxial Cable and Tommye's Fashion Shop. Survivors include one son, Charles F. Garrett of Durant, Okla.; two daughters, Peggy Puls of Tulsa, Okla., and Tommye Strassheim of Siloam Springs; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Pilkington of Fort Smith and Henry Pilkington of Pryor, Okla.; two sisters, Pearl Sprow and Pauline Rouse, both of Ponca City. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Siloam Springs with Dr. Jerry Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wasson Funeral Home of Siloam Springs. Pearl Garland SALUS - Pearl Garland, 90, of Salus died Nov. 26, 1997, at her home. She was born in Union to Samual and Jane Brittham Moore. She was postmistress at Salus for 38 years and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oscar Garland; one son. Survivors include two daughters, Ola Charlene Baugus of Salus and Sidney Singleton of North Little Rock; one son, Fred Garland of Rogers; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. Services were Nov. 29 at Roller-Cox Funeral Home in Clarksville with the Rev. Jack Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Rosetta Cemetery in Ozone. Pallbearers were Denny Garland, Mike Garland, John Baugus, James Baugus, Brandon Vaughn and Jeffery Baugus. Honorary pallbearers will be James Garland, Mikey Baugus and Jonathan Baugus. Liz Coleman FAYETTEVILLE - Elizabeth Ann Coleman, 41, of Fayetteville died Dec. 1, 1997, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born Feb. 10, 1956, in Fort Smith to Shamblin and Melba L. Bennett Coleman. She was owner and operator of Kids Depot and a former director of Central's Center for Children at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was a Fayetteville district representative for North Arkansas Conference Native American Committee. Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey Boyd Ash; one son, Caleb Coleman Ash; her mother of Fort Smith; two brothers, Larry Coleman of Little Rock and David Coleman of St. Louis, Mo. Vivian Kendrick SPRINGDALE - Vivian Kendrick, 66, of Springdale died Dec. 1, 1997, at a local nursing home. She was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Stevens County, Kan., to Hardy B. and Louise Ritter Webb. She was a former secretary for State Farm Insurance and a member of the First Baptist Church of Lowell and the Christian Women's Club. She moved to the area 10 years ago from Owasso, Okla., and enjoyed gardening, hiking and crafts. Survivors include her husband, Bob Kendrick of the home, to whom she was married Sept. 11, 1951; three sons, Daryl Kendrick of Fayetteville, David Kendrick of Piedmont, Okla., and Duane Kendrick of Ardmore, Okla.; one daughter, Dawn Phillips of Collinsville, Okla.; two brothers, Melvin Webb of Moscow, Kan., and Don Webb of San Pedro, Calif.; two sisters, Neva Murphy of Jones, Okla., and Kara Beth Gosnell of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren. Gregg St., Fayetteville, 72702. Eugene Hollaway PEA RIDGE - Eugene (Gene) Hollaway, 74, of Pea Ridge died Dec. 2, 1997, at his home. He was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Lowell to John A. and Bessie Bea Burch Hollaway. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 390th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, during which time he received the European-African, Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Local 300 AFL-CIO of Los Angeles and attended Garfield First Baptist Church. He worked in construction while living in Homeland, Calif., before moving to Pea Ridge in 1991. He was preceded in death by one sister; one brother. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Dorsett and Jim of Garfield and Glynda Caldwell and Aaron of Washburn, Mo.; one sister, Leona Wood of Ontario, Calif.; one brother, James Hollaway of Mariposa, Calif.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sisco Funeral Home in Pea Ridge with the Rev. Ronnie Booth and the Rev. Bennie Thompson officiating. Lula Mae Farkas WINSLOW - Lula Mae Farkas, 66, of Winslow died Dec. 2, 1997, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Carter to William Jackson and Violette Paschal Stout. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Louis Farkas of the home; one son, Brett Farkas of Winslow; two brothers, Tom Stout of Fort Smith and Curtis Stout of Greenland; two grandchildren.
