All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** Robert Anderson Medearis Friday May 15, 1914 Westville Record, Adair Co., OK ROBERT ANDERSON MEDEARIS was born in Knox Co. TN Oct. 1, 1840. He moved with his father to Washington Co. AR in 1857. While attending school in St. Louis, MO. he was converted & united with the Methodist Episcopal South Church. He served 4 years in the Confederate Army as Lieutenant of Shannon's Co. He married Aug 21, 1867 Miss Amanda Hinds of Viney Grove, AR. In 1868 he with his wife united with Cumberland Presbyterian Church--was elder in the church for many years. Elected & served one year as Moderator of Arkansas Presbytery. He served 4 years in legislature in Little Rock, AR. After 1906 he joined Presbyterian Church in Westville, OK & was instrumental in building the church at that place. He said that he would rather have a Presbyterian church in Westville than a monument to his grave. He had 8 children, one of whom died in infancy. The 7 surviving him are Mrs. George Gibvson (Taska) & Park Medearis of Westville, OK; Mrs. Narcisse Thibodeaux (Lillian) of Breaux Bridge Louisiana; Frank, Albert & Mrs. Willet McGuire (Blanch) of CA. and Dr. R.S. (Roberts Summerfield) Medearis of Argenta, AR. Robert Medearis died April 3, 1914 at his home in Westville, OK & was interred at Old Union Cemetery, AR where his early church work began. He was a brother-in-law of W.G.D. Hinds & Mrs. Jennie (Hinds) Brasel of Muskogee. AR since 1857. He moved to Westville, OK abt 1901--he died there but is buried in Old Union Cemetery nr. Cincinnati, AR.) Robert Anderson Medearis’ Obituary in The Westville Record (Oklahoma) Friday May 15, 1914--It says-- Robert Anderson Medearis was born in Knox Co, Tenn. Oct. 1, 1840. His father moved to Washington County, Arkansas in 1857. While attending school in St. Louis, Mo, he was converted and united with the M.E.S. church. He served 4 years in the Confederate Army as Lieutenant of Shannon’s Co. On August 21, 1867 he was married to Miss Amanda Hinds of Viney Grove, Ark. In 1868 Robert & his wife "Amanda" united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was for many years an efficient ruling elder in the church. He was elected & served one year as Moderator of Arkansas Presbytery. He was elected to Arkansas State Legislature served 4 years. He served 4 years in the legislature in Little Rock, Ark. Sometime after 1906 he joined the Presbyterian Church at Westville, Okla., & was instrumental in building the church at that place. He said that he would rather have a Presbyterian church in Westville than a monument to his grave. 8 children were given as a blessing to this home, one of whom died in infancy. 7 with the mother survive him. They are: Mrs. George Gibson and Park Medearis of Westville, Mrs. Narcissee Thibeaux of Louisiana, Frank, Albert and Mrs. Willet McGuire of California and Dr. R. S. Medearis of Argenta, Ark. He departed this life April 3, 1914 at his home in Westville, Okla. He was interred at Old Union, Ark., where his early church work began. He was consecrated, faithful, every day Christian. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. Mr. Medearis was a brother-in-law of W. G. D.
