FROM EL DORADO (Union County) NEWS-TIMES, EL DORADO, ARKANSAS JUNE 8,1988 Ellis A. Whitten, 91, of 507 E. Hillsboro, died Tuesday in a local nursing home. He was born March 21, 1897, in Laneburg, the son of William Riley and Elnora Hill Whitten. He was a retired senior operator for Monsanto Chemical Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a 1924 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He was affiliated with Union County Schools from 1925 to 1942 and served as coach, principal and superintendent. Under his coaching, several teams won state championships. Whitten was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of El Dorado Masonic Lodge No. 13, F&AM. He was a member of the Veterans of World War I, El Dorado Barracks, and served as local, state, and regional commander. He was a veteran of World War I-U. S. Army, a member of Woodsmen of the World, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2413, a charter member of the El Dorado Senior Citizens Club, which he served as president for over 20 years, and was a member and organizer of the El Dorado Unit of RSVP. He had been a resident of Union County since 1925. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clayte Holloway Whitten of El Dorado; a daughter, Mrs. John W. "Elizabeth" Meux of Wichita Falls, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Young's Chapel with the Rev. David Prothro officiating. Burial will follow in Willisville Methodist Cemetery between Waldo and Rosston on Arkansas 19 under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors. FROM EL DORADO TIMES, UNION COUNTY, ARKANSAS, MONDAY, JULY 9, 1984 KNOX CITY (RNS) - Anna Belle Snelson, 84, of Knox City died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in Knox County Hospital after a brief illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Foursquare Gospel Church. The Rev. Gene Prevo of the Guthrie Baptist Church will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Dave Stone of Foursquare Gospel Church of Knox City and Sister Bailey of Knox City. Burial will be at the Knox City Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. Born July 24, 1899, in Rocky Mount, Ark., her parents were the late W.R. and Elnora Whitten. She married Ben I. Snelson on Nov. 26, 1921, in Arkansas. She was a homemaker, and she was a charter member of the Foursquare Gospel Church. Survivors include her husband of Knox City; two daughters, Barbara Jones and Bonnie Tankersly, both of Knox City; a brother, Ellis Whitten of El Dorado, Ark.; four grandchildren; and six grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Joe Marion, Kenneth Burt, T.W. Barton, Leon Watson, Jerry Curd, and W. Skiles. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Wilhite, Carl Chafin, H.L. McNulty and Bennet McNulty. EL DORADO (Union County) NEWS-TIMES, FEBRUARY 2, 1938 WILLIAM RILEY WHITTEN William Riley Whitten, 81, succumbed to an illness of one week at the home of his son, Ellis A. Whitten, near Wyatt school at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Whitten, a former merchant of Lanesburg, Ark., had resided for the past four years with his son, who is principal of the Wyatt school. He was a member of the New Salem (Methodist) church of Lanesburg. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nora Whitten, five daughters, Mrs. Emma Cottingham of Sayre, Ark.; Mrs. Jennie Hunter of Hot Springs, Mrs. Lillie Carter of Texarkana, Mrs. Laura Hunter of Lanesburg and Mrs. Belle Snelson of Knox City, Tex.; and five sons, W. R., Jr., and M. F., both of Knox City, J. A. of Prescott, Alex of Bogwell, Texas and Ellis A. Whitten of El Dorado. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wyatt school auditorium Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. D. K. Sawyer will officiate, assisted by the Rev. J. E. Hargett. Pallbearers will be: A. W. Lawrence, Joel Trull, K. I. Peters, J. M. Hampton, T. E. Goodwin, H. A. Adams, J. B. Thurlkill and George Evans. Immediately following the services at Wyatt, the body will be taken overland by the Hall-McWilliams Undertaking company to the New Salem church, 10 miles south of Prescott, for further rites at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Young's Mortuary. A native of Nevada County, she was the widow of Fred J. White, Sr. Survivors include a son, Fred J. (Buck) Whitten, 81, a former South Arkansas resident, died Thursday Morning in a Knox City, Tex. hospital after a lengthy illness. A native of Nevada County, he was the son of William Riley and Nora Hill Whitten. He had lived in Knox City for many years, and was a retired cotton farmer and rancher. Survivors include his widoe; two sons, and three daughters, all of Texas; three brothers, Ellis A. Whitten, 507 E. Hillsboro, El Dorado; Alex Whitten of Bagwell, Tex. and Amon Whitten of Hope; and three sisters, Mrs. Laura Hunter of Prescott, Mrs. Lillie Moon of Texarkana, and Mrs. Belle Snelson of Knox City. Mrs. Fred White, 1216 W. First St., is his niece. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Knox City. Mr. And Mrs. Whitten will leave Friday morning to join other relatives enroute to Knox City. FROM THE EL DORADO TIMES, APRIL 17, 1972 Mrs. Lillie Moon, 87, of Texarkana died in a Texarkana hospital Saturday after a lengthy illness. She was the sister of Ellis A. Whitten of El Dorado. Born in September, 1884, in Nevada County, she was the daughter of William Riley and Nora Hill Whitten. She had been a resident of Texarkana for many years. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Moon of Texarkana; two sons, Lester Hunter and Johnny Hunter, both of Texarkana; a daughter, Mrs. Myrtie Putch of Texarkana; two other brothers, Amon Whitten of Hope and Alex Whitten of Bagwell, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Belle Snelson of Knox City Tex.; and a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She also leaves an El Dorado nephew and three nieces, Frederick J. White, Mrs. Ruth Nodini, Mrs. Anne Huskey, and Mrs. Velma Gregory. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of East Funeral Home in Texarkana.
