Poe, William E Sr Arkansas Gazette Jan. 1, 1930 William E Poe Sr, Aged 77 Died suddenly at 11:10 a.m. yesterday (12/21/29) While hunting squirrels 18 miles southeast of Benton. He had made his home at Benton for the past two years but for many years previous he had been a resident of Little Rock His death was said to have been due to heart disease. Alford Cobb of Benton was with him at the time. Mr. Poe is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs J W Walton of Benton, Mrs Harry W Browning and Mrs W C Kramp of Little Rock and Mrs J T Cob of Park Hill; three sons W E Joe Jr, and Arthur Poe of Little Rock and W O ("Sonny") Poe Rural Route No 1 North Little Rock; two sisters, Mrs Almina Bennett of Benton and Mrs Della Wright of Chickasha, Okla, and two brothers, H F Poe of England and Joe Poe of Little Rock. He is also survived by his Aunt, Mrs Shreptle McCool of Benton who is 100 years old. Mr Poe was born in Grant County July 21, 1852 and came to Little Rock in 1888. For many years he conducted a general merchantile business at Sixth and Center Streets. He was an honorary member Sheridan lodge. Mason. The body will be removed by Owens & Co to the home of Mrs. Kramp 1925 Wolfe Street at 1 this afternoon. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. ============================================================================ Sumner, Matilda E Arkansas Gazette Jan 1, 1930 Magnolia, Dec 31. - Columbia county's oldest citizen, Mrs Matilda Ellen Sumner, aged 99, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs E E Cupp, near Emerson, Sunday night. Funeral Services were held yesterday in Smyrna church, one of the oldest churches in the county, of which she was a member Mrs Sumner's husband died 67 years ago, leaving her with 10 children, five of whom are living. The eldest is Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Turner of Gladwater, Tex, who is 83, Other children are, B F Sumner, 77, Mrs E E Cupp, Miss Ann Sumner, all of Emerson, Mrs R A Warren of Walkerville, this county, who is 67 and the youngest of the five children. Mrs Sumner was born in Georgia. She was married in Alabama before she was 16. The Couple moved to Arkansas in 1856 and settled in the county, where they spent the remainder of their lives. She now has 102 living decendants to the fifth generation. During the late World War, Mrs Sumner spent her time knitting wool socks for soldiers, finishing 13 pairs which were sent to the soldiers on the front. ============================================================================ Lee, John Thomas Arkansas Gazette Jan 1, 1930 Arkadelphia, Dec 31. - John Thomas Lee, 82 who has lived here since 1850 and who was one of the best known business men of the early days of the city, died at his home this afternoon. Born in Chambers County, Alabama, November 9,1847, Mr Lee came with his parents to Arkansas in 1850, and was married to Mrs Eudora Lee October 16, 1879. He is survived by two children, Mrs. E W Thomas and Will H Lee of the Thomas Drug Co. of this city, also by two sisters, Mrs B N Carter and Miss Dona Lee, both of the Hearn community near here, and by one brother Joe J Lee of Hermleigh, Tx Mr. Lee clerked and was accountant for M M Cohn who conducted a mercantile business here before going to Little Rock. Later he was in business with Scott Hearin of Gurdon. Veteran, who saw Jackson killed. John B McCann of Spiro, Okla aged 87, confederate veteran, died in a hospital here today Mr. McCann served under General Stonewall Jackson in the Civil War and was present when Jackson was killed accidentally. He was the great grandson of William McCann, American officer who was killed at the Battle of Germantown in the Revolution. A native of Wilmington, NC, Mr. McCann was engaged in cotton exporting until 1900, when he retired and moved to Oklahoma City. About 20 years ago he moved to Spiro where he has lived since. Bailey was a native of Georgia, but came to Greenbrier 45 years ago, coming to Conway in 1902. He engaged in the grocery business until he was elected county clerk in 1908. He served two terms. For the past several years he has been serving as an active justice of the peace. He was the son of Charles E Durham, well known Conway real estate and insurance dealer and banker and Mrs. Durham. He was educated in the Conway public schools and in Hendrix College. Durham was married about five years ago to Miss Neva Crum of Helena, graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College here and for the past few years they have been living in Helena where he was engaged in the machinery business. Durham had been suffering from the disease for several weeks and was brought to the hospital here from Helena a week ago. His condition steadily grew worse. As a last resort a blood transfusion was undergone by his yunger brother Robert. He was born in Lauderdale county, Tennessee, and moved to this county with his parents when 10 years old, and his lived within 100 yards of the same location since. He ran away from home during the Civil war, and joined the Confederate army and served through four years without his family knowing of his whereabouts. He also was president of the Bank of Elaine and died on the same day that institution was taken over by a liquidating agent.
