Carter MARVELL MAN KILLED WHEN AIRPLANE STRIKES DUMP TRUCK (Showed 2 PICTURES OF WRECK) A 42 yr.-old Marvell man died Sat. morning after an airplane taking off struck a dump truck as it crossed the runway at the Helena-West Helena Airport. Police identified the victim, the driver of the truck, as Kenneth F. Carter, an employee of Hill and Hill Construction Company. Deputy Sheriff Scott Russell, one of several law enforcement officers who rushed to the scene, said the left wing of the airplane clipped the cab of the Mack truck as Carter hauled a load of dirt to a construction site at the airport. The airplane was a cropduster loaded with insecticide and piloted by Paul Riddell, 24, who received only a few cuts and bruses as a result of the crash. The impact split the airplane actually in half, according to the Fire Chief Pat Sensat. The motor and chemical storage area was separated from the pilot and tail section," said the chief. "The left wing had been severed.... it was the one that made contact with the plane and was near the dump truck. Carter was driving north on a taxiway when the accident occurred. Riddell tried to lift the airplane off the ground and veered to the right but was unable to avoid the truck. "He pulled up and attempted to bank right," said Russell. "But he just didn't have the speed or the altitude." "The cropduster had just been loaded with about 400 lbs. of cotton insecticide, according to Russell. The plane's wheels rose a few inches off the ground before impact. The right wing dug into the ground as the left wing struck the truck cab, killing Carter instantly the deputy said. Carter was hauling dirt to a site where a navigation system is being installed near the airport. Ricky Bailes, an amployee of Riddell Flying Service, said the truck driver appeared unaware of the approaching aircraft. "He didn't even slow down when he crossed the runway," Bailes said. "He didn't know what hit him." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUGUST 24 & 25, 1996 PAGE 6 ************** KENNETH CARTER Graveside service for Kenneth "Punkin" Carter of Marvell was conducted Thur. afternoon at Cypert Cemetery.
