D. CARTER J. D. Carter, 85, of Monticello, died Tues., Jan. 9, 2001 at Drew Memorial Hospital at Monticello. Born January 3, 1916, in Lincoln county, he was a son of Dan and Minnie Carter. He was a member of First Presby. Church at Monticello. He was retired from the Drew County Sale Barn. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Bracken. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Carter, who died Feb. 5, 1993. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Knight Carter of Monticello; two daughters, Pat Lock of Lake Village and Gail Hyatt of Monticello; three brothers, Moten Carter and Lamoine Carter, both of Monticello, and Claude Carter of Dumas; three sisters, Shirley Robertson and Jewel King, both of Star City, and Lillie Mae O'Briant of White Hall; two stepsons, Jerry Spires of Clinton, Miss. and Hugh Spires of Pine Bluff; a step-daughter, Joyce Byers of New Orleans, four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 at Stehpheson-Dearman Funeral Home at Monticello with Brother Robert Short officiating.
