ROY MITCHELL, veteran KARK anchorman, dies at age 61 LITTLE ROCK -- Roy Mitchell, veteran news anchor for Little Rock television station KARK, was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack Saturday, the Pulaski County coroner said. He was 61. Mitchell’s body was discovered by his wife, Betty, in a bathroom of their Little Rock home Saturday morning, says Coroner Steve Nawojczyk. The popular television personality "suffered what looks to be a massive coronary," Nawojczyk. He had apparently come home from work sometime during the night when he suffered it. His wife didn’t discover it until she got up this morning. "It’s a natural death, and there’s no indication of any need for an autopsy," the coroner said. A native of Heber Springs, Mitchell was a radio announcer in Little Rock before working at stations in Texarkana, Fort Smith, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Los Angeles. He joined KARK as managing editor from Los Angeles television station KABC, where he was a news anchor. Mitchell was teamed with weatherman Tom Bonner and sportscaster Dave Woodman when KARK launched its highly-rated "Eyewitness News" on March 15, 1970. The three were still broadcasting together nearly 20 years later, and appeared on KARK’s 6 p.m. Newscast Friday. Mitchell also delivered the 10 p.m. news that day. "Roy was my dear friend, He taught me a whole lot," said Bonner. "The public loved Roy, obviously. His appeal was a combination of his ability to deliver the news with authority and knowledge, and his easiness to be around and watch. That was a remarkably good combination." Bob Steel, KARK news director, agree: "He had a genuineness, credibility and knowledge that came through that tube." Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-Ark.) said Saturday that Mitchell was a longtime friend. Bumpers said the men became close when Mitchell covered his trade mission to the Soviet Union during Bumpers’ first term as governor in 1971. Besides his wife, Mitchell is survived by three daughters. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Saturday, KARK said. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, February 13, 1989 Page 2A JOHN D.
