He was born Feb. 19. 1919 in the Bumblebee community near Glenwood, the son of Acie Allen and Ada Ward Allen. He was an Army Air Force veteran of WW II and a retired employee of Ark. power and Light. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Allen of Glenwood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Manon and Ronnie Tidwell of Glenwood and Mary Lynn and Rex Gladden of Caddo Gap; one brother, Phillip Allen of Ashville, N.C.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Mount Tabor Community Church with the Revs. J. B. Evans and Jody Gannaway officiating. Asimos, 95, of Hot Springs, died Tues., Oct. 13, 1992, in a local hospital. A resident of Hot Springs for 46 yrs., he was the former owner/operator of the DeSoto and Park hotels. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Past District governor of the Order of Ahepa, member of the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Hotel/Motel Greeters Assoc., Hot Springs Lodge 62, F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Little Rock, Shrine of North America Sahara Temple of Pine Bluff and past president of the Shrine Club of Hot Springs. Survivors include his wife, Jane Asimos of Hot Springs; one son, George J. Asimos of Athens, Greece and Hot Springs; one niece, Anna Elfter of Hot Springs; and several other nieces and nephews. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sat. at the Greek Orthodex Church with Bishop Timothy of Detroit and Father Elias Scoulas of Little Rock officiating. He was retired from Reynolds Metals and a member of Eastern Star 564 and Mason Lodge 365. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Doddridge Bell of Malvern; one son, Sherman Lee Bell of Brush Creek; one stepson, Arthur Doddridge of Traskwood; two sisters, Bessie Blumstiel and Saddie Hutzel, both of Hot Springs; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. BRENNOCK with picture BARLING-- Sister Mary Leonarda Brennock, RSM, 90, of Catherine McAuley Convent of Mercy in Barling died Wed., Oct. 14, 1992, at her residence. She was born April 16, 1902 in Goulds, Newfoundland and was baptized Lucy Brennock. Her parents were John and Mary Walsh Brennock. She came to the U.S. in 1927 and became a citizen in 1939. She entered the Sisters of Mercy community at Mount St. Mary’s in Little Rock in 1927 and made her first vows in 1930. Her entire life was devoted to the healing ministry. She graduated form St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Hot Springs, in 1935 and served at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Warner Brown Hospital in El Dorado, and St. Joseph’s Regional Health Center in Hot Springs. Her ministry included positions as night supervisor, floor supervisor, obstetrics supervisor, administrator and pastoral minister until her retirement in 1990. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lawrence Keiley of Goulds; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m. Sat. in Sacred Heart of Mary church, Barling. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Mercy Crest in Barling. Burial will be in Lowe Cemetery. ----------------------------------- Well-known newswoman, activict dies EDNA LEE HOWE Edna Lee Howe died Oct. 15, 1992. Mrs. Howe, wife of the late J. Will Howe, was a native and life resident of Hot Springs. Prior to retirement in 1982, she was public relations director for First Federal Savings (Landmark Savings Bank) for more than 14 yrs. Before joining that institution, Mrs. Howe had been associated with the Hot Springs newspapers for 39 yrs., joining the editorial staff of the New Era, and afternoon daily no longer published, in 1929, The following year, the NEw Era was consolidated with the Sentinel-Record. During her career, she was nominated for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize Award for Excellence in Journalism. When she left the newspapers in 1968, she was assistant editor of The Sentinel-Record. Mrs. Howe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a former deacon in that church. Through the years, she had been identified with a number of community organizations, among them the Salvation Army where she served as a member of the club’s public relations committee. She was also honored by the club as recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. She was a former member and past president of the Community Relations Council of the Ouachita Job Corps. The daughter of a Confederate veteran of the War Between the States, James A. Rhodes, she was one of the very few “real” daughters of the Confederacy in Hot Springs. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Martha Gene Farmere of Hot Springs; two granddaughters, Mrs. Kathleen Masterson-Bryan of Hot Springs and Mrs. Martha Lee Byrd of Scranton, Pa; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Byrd and Andrew Byrd of Scranton, Brandon Masterson, Columbus, Ohio, and Anna Masterson of Hot Springs. The body will be cremated and private services will be at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Hot Springs Funeral Home. JACKSON Julia Roper Corley Jackson, 98, died Wed., Oct. 14, 1992, at a local hospital She was born in Cedar Glades, was a lifetime resident of this area and a member of First United Methodist Church, of which she was retired as financial secretary. Survivors include one duaghter, Mary Lenore Clarke of Richmond, VA.; and a twin sister, Jessie Roper Frantz of Hot Springs. She was a homemaker and a resident of Hot Springs for 18 yrs. Survivors include her husband, Howard H. McClure of Hot Springs. A memorial service will be held next week in Moline, Ill. She was a former meat cutter at Food-4-Less in Hot Springs, a member of Souls Harbor Church, founder of Pioneer Children’s Program at Souls Harbor Church and a former Girl Scout leader. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Morris of Hot Springs; one son, Dennie Morris of Hot Springs; one daughter, Jennifer Morris of Hot Springs; her mother, Georgia Lee Stearman of Waldron; three brothers, Lester Stearman of Waldron, Alto Stearman of Jones Mill and David Stearman of Hartman; two sisters, Lennie Stearman of Marianna and Jeanette Johnson of Jonesboro; and one aunt, Jo Long of Mountain Pine. Orr, 75, of Hot Springs Village, died Wed., Oct. 14, 1992, in Hot Springs Village. He was born July 12, 1917 in Carthage, Mo., and spent his youth in Ramona, Okla. He graduated from Southeast Univ. in WAshington, D. C., where he became a special agent of the FBI. He moved to Dallas to work for American Airlines in 1967, retiring in 1981, and moving to Hot Springs Village. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, and was active in the Kiwanis, Ex-FBI Agents Assoc. and Nine Holers Golf. Survivors include two sons, Richard Orr of Washington, Conn., and William Orr of Hempstead, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Julia Orr; three sisters, Phyllis Williams of Houston, Frieda Stockton of Hugo, Okla., and Kathryn Orr of Oklahoma City. He was a retired farmer and was honored in 1978 for serving over 50 yrs. as a Sunday school superintendent for Manchester Untied Methodist Church, where he was a member for 67 yrs. He also served on the first board of governors for Clark County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Clark County farmers Assoc. and Manchester RCI. He was the widower of Gladys McCaskill Fite. Survivors include two sons, Harry Fite Jr. of Pine Bluff and Charles W. Akin Russell of Hot Springs; one son, Kile Russell of Hot Springs; two daughters, Kari Johnston of Fort Smith and Kim Williams of Hot Springs; two sons-in-law, Tommy Johnston of Fort Smith and Brent Williams of Hot Springs; one daughter-in-law, Jennifer Russell of Hot Springs; two sisters, Phillis Pate and Florence Pate, both of Hot Springs; and four grandchildren, Taylor Johnston, Kila Williams, Kayde Williams and Kaleb Williams. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Bates Community Church with the Rev. Mike Green officiating. Pallbearers will be Climmi Woodfork, Roy Adams, Monty Davis, Danny Martin, Gilbert Martin, Trevor Lange, Manuel Bates and Jim Hughes. Honorary pallbearers are Al and Pat Massey, Ed Ashburn, Ed and Betty Lucas, Tom Wilkins, Dave and Carolyn Mueller, Kurt Oakley, Drs. Tom Hollis and Ray Jouett, Kenneth Wheatley Sr. and Kenneth Wheatley Jr. Burial will be in Morning Star Cemetery under the direction of Hot Springs Funeral Home.
