- From a private letter from W. A. Clay, formerly Deputy Marshal in this
city, now in the lumber business at Chester, Arkansas, particulars are
gained of the suicide of Mrs. John P. Purkhiser (Julia Catherine Cheek).
Mrs. Purkhiser formerly lived in Joplin and has relatives living near
Scotland. She committed suicide on the 8th of May at her home two miles
from Mountainburg, AR. During the temporary absence of the family she
hung herself to a joist of the house. She at times showed symptoms of
insanity. A husband and five children survive her.
