Meadows At the home of his grand daughter, Mrs. N. M. Fite on West Gentry, last Thursday evening, death claimed the life of George W. Meadows, in all probabilities Checotah's oldest citizen. Mr. Meadows was born in Whitley County, Ky., October 3, 1830, being 96 years, 2 months and 19 days of age at the time of death. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the 3rd Kentucky Regiment for service in the war between the United States and Mexico and had the distinction of being one of the victorious army which captured Mexico City under the command of General Scott. At the time of his death Mr. Meadows, according to the U. S. Pension Department was one of 11 survivors of the Mexican War. Mr. Meadows also served in the Federal Army during the Civil war. Mr. Meadows was the father of seven children, two of whom are still living, James Meadows of Pryor, Okla., 75 years of age and Mrs. Hannah Matthews of Muldrow, Okla., aged 65 years. He is also survived by grand children, great grandchildren and great, great grand children to the number of seventy-five. Mr. Meadows came to Indian Territory 34 years ago and has resided at various places on the east side of the state during that time. He came to Checotah in November 1924, and as mentioned above has made his home with his grand daughter in this city. Prior to that time he resided for several years with Mr. and Mrs. Yearton, well know residents of the Shady Grove neighborhood. The remains were taken to Alma, Ark., Friday where the funeral services were held Saturday, internment following at the Bolton cemetery, Dean Springs, Ark. While George lived in various place over his years, he lived mostly in CRAWFORD COUNTY until 2 years before his death.] .
