The Nation, State and City joined in paying the last tribute to the
seventeen marines and sailors who lost their lives at the Battle of Vera
Cruz. The bodies arrived aboard the funeral ship "Montana" May 11th 1914,
and were conveyed to the New York Navy Yard, where the simple but
impressive funeral services were held. Mayor Mitchell placed a wreath on
the casket of each of the heroes.
