The surname index is tied to the scans via the enumeration district number and the sheet number. The surname index uses the first four letters of the township, underscore and enumeration number as the file name. The scans use the enumeration district number and the sheet number as the file name. Knowing this, one can move quickly from the index to a scan by noting the sheet number and line number. For instance, if a township is named Banner and the enumeration district number is 50, the file name will be bann_050.txt and the scans for Banner will all start with 050. If you find a surname of interest in Banner, note the line number and sheet number on the index. For instance, if you are looking for sheet 5A it will be found on scan 050_05A.gif. Digitized (scanned) census frames are not as clear as the original because of compromises necessary to keep file sizes within acceptable bounds. However, they will be quite readable unless the film quality is badly degraded due to under or over exposure. Therefore, if you know that a surname should be on a given census but does not appear on this index or is questionable go to the film directly at your library or an LDS family history center and check it for yourself. Either facility can obtain census films on interlibrary loan. Please notify the NDGenWeb Archivist at http://www.usgwarchives.net/nd/ndfiles.htm of any obvious errors.
