Shirley had originally been assigned to this transcription. Her and I became close internet friends in the last few months of her life. She worked on this transcription right up until the day she was taken Home. It is my wish to take the opportunity to honor her here. Her work was at great personal sacrifice and I would like to give you a few of her own words to give you an idea of her sacrifice: Extracted from email from Shirley WREN November 12 1999: “I think I got you bet, I was writing your name in my address book when I finish II look at your name, I had to laugh at myself i had you down as Nancy Wren instead of Waits, see I know better but my finger got carry awy....I’ve a heart problem too, i have had two blood clots in the lung and leg. I have to wear oxygen 24-7 so my blood can supply my heart witht he proper amount of oxygen our body acquire I could go on for hours, I’m very thankfull an gratefull I still have a life. I’m up all night that when i surf the net looking for info....”. Shirley literally meant “finger”, as she took on this project only able to use one finger to type, not one hand, but one finger! Along with the health problems that she mentions in this extraction, several of her other body functions did not work and she was bedridden. If this was not enough, her only child had suffered a stroke during this time of her own illness. Shirley nursed her child back to health from her own sick bed. Shirley’s husband put wheels on the family dining table so it could be wheeled into the bedroom where Shirley could sit in her bed and do her research on the computer. Shirley was researching her African American roots and was not able to complete her work. Unfortunately I lost Shirley’s last emails due to a computer crash, but some of her first emails restored when I got my system back up. From memory she felt like she was connected to the WRENs and ROBINSONs of Amite Co MS. When you WREN researchers find Shirley in your research, please document her so she is not forgotten. She passed away March 2000 in Cleveland Ohio. You should be proud to have her in your family! Nancy Waite
