Jim Oke 13 Aug 1997
I am researching a number of Oke families who settled in Canada and the United States during the period 1830-1900. One family settled near Sparta, Ontario about 1857. I have seen a diary by one son of the family, named John Harry Oke, which includes the statement "offered a job by eldest brother, manager of a large furniture factory in St. Louis, Missouri". No date is given but the context would place the time about 1875. John's eldest brother was named Samuel Oke, born in Devon, Eng. about 1843. Can anyone comment on a Samuel Oke who managed a furniture factory in the St. Louis area in the 1870s ? Seeking where abouts of Samuel and/or descendants.

(By the way, John Oke declined his brother's job offer and became a Methodist preacher in rural Ontario for the rest of his life which is another story.)

Searching for the marriage of Ida Belle REED or Ida Belle SULLIVAN or Ida Belle WOODS or Ida Belle HINES/HINDS. Last rumored to have married again in St. Louis then moved to Oregon. She would have married again after 1918. Her maiden name was Sullivan, then she married Oliver G. Hines/Hinds, then H. C. Woods, then James W. Reed. Ida had two children by Oliver Hines and they were Betsy Ann Hines and Katie May Hines. Do not think she had any children by H. C. Woods. Ida had three children by James W. Reed and they were Nannie, Louise and Sarah Frances Reed. Any help on these would be appreciated.

I am searching for any available information about Israel MILLER(1860- ?) and his wife Bertha (1860- ?) The Millers lived in downtown St Louis--near the Convention Plaza between 1884 or 1886 until at least 1902. He had butcher shop in that neighborhood (Information from the city directories). His name disappeared from the city directory in 1903 (Death? Moved?). In 1912 two of his children appeared in the city directory giving their home as Maplewood. One suspects that the family moved out there as a result of the development of Maplewood in the 1890s. Maplewood Public Library has copies of a Maplewood city directory for the years 1912 and 1915. Does anyone know whether there is a more extensive run of the Maplewood directories and what library might have them?

My mother's family is from St Louis and I believe originally from Hungary and/or Czechislovia. Her maiden name was YANAK. Father Alexander mother Emily KRENN (could be Kren). I know they had cousins in New Jersey. The Yanak name has mystery surrounding it because her father never spoke about his family. Name was probably spelled Janak or Janek originally. He served in the Army and died in a VA hospital of TB. Should be buired in a St Louis national cemetary. I believe he died about 1936. George Krenn was Emily's brother. I know they attended the 1904 World's fair. So I'm guessing they were born in late 1800's or Emily may have been born in 1900. My mother lived on Bamberger street when I was born in Lutheran Hospital. My mother has a sister Mary Margaret who married a Walter Gray. My mother's name was Ann Marie YANAK. My mother and father, Charles L.SUTTON were married in a Lutheran church somewhere in St Louis. Any help you can give is appreciated.

My family "appeared" in Kirkwood Mo. over 100 years ago. My grandfather was Arthur Joseph Anth and had 12 siblings supposedly. He bought property when they arrived, but NO where can anyone tell me where they came from, its as if they never existed before they got here. The ssdi lists only 10 Anths. Most of whom I know about. The listings were in Glencoe, Bridgeton, St. Louis City & County. A couple ladies were in Fla. must have retired there. The family had no info to offer. Either they dont know or wont say. My father never knew his mother she died 3 days after he was born. And amazingly enough he doesnt remember having grandparents. This has been most baffling most of my life. And I would love to find out some info. Thanks.

David & Beverly Horttor
The family Bible says that John HORTTOR was born in St. Louis, MO, 1845, but family tradition says he came to this country from Germany when he was 10-12 years old. He was said to have come with 2 or 3 bothers. A descendant says he may have plaited whips on the OR Trail and also worked in an armory during the Civil War. We have found no records to support these traditions. We found an index for LA 1860 census with Barbara and Catherine Horter, two names in the family. We have not seen the actual census. John Horttor was married first to Arraminta DODSON, July 8, 1869, in Jackson Co., MO; 2nd Amanda Dodson, sister to Arraminta, 6 Nov 1882, Jackson Co., MO, 3rd to Sarah Rebecca Lamb, 1 Jan 1898, Lexington,Cleveland Co., OK. In the 1870 and 1880 census for Linn Co., MO, there is a John Horter, wife, Sarah Jane. This John was 34 in 1880 so is about the same age as John Horttor married to Arraminta living in Cass Co., 1870 and 1880.Does anyone have more information about the John Horter and Sarah Jane in Linn Co.? Does anyone know of a Horttor family in St. Louis about 1845 that may have a son, John?

Wilhelmina EGGERS (of Bockenem, Hannover) married Herman Zakrzewski (of Berlin) in St. Louis in 1858. Herman died in 1908. 'Mina' signed documents in his probate file as recently as 1910, then disappeared. I looked for kids or grandkids on the chance that she moved in with them, found none. I checked the Post-Dispatch funeral notices 1910-1917. I checked the records of Holy Ghost Ev. Church, where I find only his death records. I checked Gatewood (UGH!) Cemetery records, found him, not her. I checked for a death certificate. I think she was too old (b. 1833) to re-marry, but checked anyway. I think she was too old to emigrate back to Hannover. This is related: Herman's estate was valued at $3000 gross, less a $2000 mortgage on their house. The lawyer for the estate was Theodore C. Eggers, who had been Circuit Attorney (1896). Does a major lawyer take on a piddling estate? Maybe, if it is for family. Theodore (11 Jan 1872, St. Louis - 24 Jun 1953, St. Louis) was a son ofHenry C. Eggers (d. 1891, St. Louis) of Hannover and Doretta ULRICH (d. Apr 1902) of Germany. (Henry had come to St. Louis in 1849, served in the 7th MO Cav.) Theodore 'graduated from Washington U. Law School 1891' (but Wash. U. knows nothing of him!). In 1904, he married Adelaide Koenig; they had two daughters, later Lisette Schamburg and Adelaide Krueger. Why would so prominent an attorney take on a piddling probate unless he was family? Please, what happened to my great-grandma?

Looking for my grandfather JAMES MEPHAM and my grandmother's maiden name MARTHA .....MEPHAM. I found James Mepham in the 1880 U.S. Census ..City of St. Louis. James Mepham was 40 years old (that would make his date of birth...???1840...said he was born in England). My grandmother was 32 years old ...that would make her date of birth ??? 1848 ???. I think her maiden name might be SHAW...and possibly could be related to the Shaw's Garden somehow. She took the train to Los Angeles in the late 1880's and eventually brought all six children there...but I don't know what happened to my grandfather James Mepham...he didn't come with her. She died in Los Angeles ...August 1, 1897 ... I have her death certificate...said she was 53 years old ...so that would make her date of birth 1844..??? in Missouri.

Hi. I am looking for a Grace B. Newton who would have been living in St Louis in 1930. In doing gegealogical research, I found my Great-grandfather's will. He was divorced and living in Punta Gorda Florida when he died in 1930. In his will he leaves $5,000 to a Grace B. Newton, of St. Louis, Missouri. We have never heard of her and wondered what the connection was. Girlfriend, housekeeper,??? Would appreciate any info. Thanks.
