Romulus Memorial Cemetery

Located at Shook and Tobine Road

Plaque that is at the entrance gives the history of this cemetery.

It reads as follows:

Romulus Memorial Cemetery

County of Wayne-State of Michigan

This historic site became a “burying ground” for the early settlers circa 1833. Warren Blair purchased 80 acres from the United States government in 1832 and he gave apportion of his land for burying purposes. Located on Shook Rd, this is the only cemetery in Romulus. Orginally it was enclosed with a board fence.

The earliest grave as shown on available records was for Polly, wife of Jenks Pullen who settled Pullen’s Corners, Polly died on 21 December 1833, “Tis said that folks back then had to light fires to scare away wolf packs when burying their dead.

Samuel Tobyne, first Romulus pioneer, came in 1827 and the early road which diagonally crossed the cemetery bears his name. Originally an Indian Trail. Tobyne Road is misspelled “Tobine” on today’s road sign.

Records show that the Romulus Cemetery was known as Blair’s cemetery as late as 1889. On 7 December 1901 at the request of S. R. Kingsley and R.C. Bird, The Romulus toenship Board adopted a resolution to take charge of the cemetery, Today the clerk of the city of Romulus is overseen of the cemetery.

Donors of this Plaque are Ruth Pullen Sherman, descendants of Alexander McBride, Pearl M. Morris, Frederick W. & Helen E. Hay.
