Tombstone Photographs

These photos were taken by Harold and Linda Saffron in July 2004. We had to scrape much moss and other debris from many of the stones. Many of the newer flat stones are nearly covered with grass and weeds. This project required much work and dedication. After the pictures were taken, we then received a list from the Benzonia Township Clerk with the persons name, burial site, death date, burial date, age, sex, along with ashes, full or child burial, about the deceased. We then added the section, lot and site numbers to the bottom of the pictures, to make the headstone easier to locate. We found several gravestones with names, but no burial records, along with a few that we could not read. We tried to find the lot that these pictures were from, and believe that the section and lot number we placed on the pictures is correct, or very close to the lot where the gravestone is located. The location that was in the Benzonia Township records was the primary source for the research.

There are also many burial sites that are unmarked. We also had to modify one page from the Benzonia Township index, as the computer slipped when copying one sheet in the B's. We inserted another sheet with the missed data in this location.

There is also a map of the Benzonia Township Cemetery that we have attached with this project. This map will show section and lot numbers.

The Benzonia Township Cemetery is located in East 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of section 35, T26N, R15W, Benzie County, MIchigan. There is access off Love Road and South Street.
