FOURTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

No return or historical sketch from the Fourth Regiment has been received, but the following condensed statement is given from the records of the Adjutant General's Office:

In February, this regiment was at Camp Pitcher, near Falmouth. On April 28, their corps (third) broke camp, marched to the left front and bivouacked for the night near the river, three miles below Fredericksburg. While General Hooker was continuing his operations, the Fourth moved with it's corps to the rear for the right wing above Fredericksburg. They marched until midnight, and then bivouacked near United States Ford. The next day they crossed the Rappahannock at this place, moving toward the front. The next day morning, May 2, their brigade was ordered forward to the woods held by the enemy.

At the battle of Chancellorsville, when our right wing was pierced by Stonewall Jackson's flank movement, they did good service to retrieve our position. The regiment shared in the famous night attack made in a dense woods, May 2. The total loss of the command in killed, wounded and missing in the engagement was thirty-two. It participated in the battle of Gettysburg. On the morning of July 3, it occupied the right and front. At the battle of Rappahannock Station, it was in Ward's Brigade.
