Henry H. Bartell and Solomon Wise as partners at Hope Mill Plantation owned 1700 acres, principally in corn and sugar cane. They had a large sugar house, cotton gin and grist mill, and also conducted a general merchandising business at their place (later known as Campbell's Ferry on the Vermilion Bayou). There was also a post office at the location. Uriah Stansbury ran the mill.
