James Monroe Manning
(1840 – 1863)

The son of James Clark Manning, James M. Manning enlisted as a private in Company E, 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment on 1 December 1861 at Columbus, Kentucky. He was present with his unit through April 1863. On 4 April 1863, he was appointed a sergeant. In May 1863, his regiment participated in the action between Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi, as Yankee General Grant began forming his noose around Vicksburg. At the critical Battle of Baker's Creek on 16 May 1863 (also known as the Battle of Champion's Hill), James M. Manning was killed in action.
