GRAND JURORS RENDER REPORT

Crowley Signal Nov 10, 1928

The grand jury, rendering its report shortly before noon today, returned 42 true bills and 38 no true bills, while recommending several of the 110 cases considered to District Attorney James Gremillion for investigation.

The usual recommendations concerning handling of drunken brawls at public dance halls, slot machines and other offenses generally listed at every term of court were made.

The report signed by L.H. Hollier of Crowley, other members of the jury, began its labors Monday morning, being Adam A. Reed, Louis Frey, Calise Abshire, Andrew D. LeBlanc, Paul Breaux, L.S. Milligan, J.N. Leger, Roland Arceneaux, C.A. Peck, Elias LeBlanc, Treville Cormier.

The report in part stated:

“We find that a great many of the cases result from drunken brawls at public gatherings and we call the attention of peace officers in charge of such places to the necessity of reporting each and every violation of the law at such places in order that those who assemble there will know that unless the law is obeyed and respected they will be reported to the proper authorities for prosecution.

“We wish to also call the attention to the operation of slot machines throughout the parish and recommend that the machines be taken up at once and destroyed as provided for by law, and the operators vigorously prosecuted.

“ We wish to submit herewith and as forming part hereof statement showing the number of prisoners presently in the parish jail, the length of time each has been incarcerated therein and the cost of maintenance of each awaiting trial.

We made a thorough inspection of the parish jail and find same to be in first class condition and sanitary and the inmates well and humanely treated.
