Two native Kentuckians are among 34 Navy captains approved yesterday by President Eisenhower for promotion to rear admiral.

They are Capt. Rhodam Yarrott McElroy, Jr., 44 of Lebanon, and Capt. Louis A. Bryan, 51, of Frankfort.

Captain McElroy, an outstanding hero of World War II, is the son of a retired Lebanon insurance man and the late Mrs. Eliza Lisle McChord McElroy. He is the commander of the aircraft carrier, Independence, and his decorations include the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four gold stars.

He attended Leganon High School and the old Kavanaugh School in Lawrenceburg before entering the Unit ed States Naval Academy at Annapolis, from which he graduated in 1935.
