Hiram Lunsford and Lydia Hollingsworth

Hiram Lunsford was born in 1805 in North Carolina. This family is found on the
1850 census of Owsley County Kentucky. He was listed as a farmer.
Hiram and Lydia had eight children: Maria, Cealia, Elisha, Hiram, James,
Sally, George and Permilia. We found their record of marriage in Clay County,
11 May 1828. We were also fortunate in finding the war record of their son
Hiram. This listed their birth places. He gave his father's birth place as
North Carolina and his mother's as South Carolina.
Members of the Lunsford family say he met a tragic death. His granddaughter,
Martha Lunsford Wilkey, said he was burning brush on his farm in Jackson
County, Kentucky, and his pant leg got caught in the brush and he couldn't get
it loose. His wife, Lydia, had called him to come to dinner and finally went
out to see why he hadn't come. She found him badly burned. He just lived a
few days. She lived with her son, Hiram, and family in Lee County, Kentucky,
after his death.
Mary Jane Lunsford Williams said she could remember her. She could remember he
as she said by a certain widnow, knitting and doing patch work. She thought
she had such beautiful black eyes.
Martha Wilkey told about her death and as they were taking her body to the
burial ground, her little dog came running after.
Martha said Lydia was a quarter-blood Indian. She didn't know what tribe she
belonged to.
