PAWNEE County was a part of the original hunting grounds of the once powerful tribe of Pawnee Indians, and after them it was named. There are two counties between it and the Indian Territory; four between it and Nebraska; five between it and Colorado; nine between it and Missouri.₁

Organized in 1872. County seat, Larned. Named for the once powerful tribe of Pawnee Indians, the area of this county having been included in their original hunting grounds.₂
