Prior to living in Indiana, they lived in Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee, and by 1860 had moved on to Vermillion County, Illinois. George TEFFT or TIFFT b. ca. 1780, Washington Co., R.I., d. 1851 near Charleston, Coles Co., Il, and Harmony MITCHELL b. unknown, d between 1840 and 1848, presumably in Coles Co., Il., who are my ggg grandparents, were married in Vigo County either 30 Oct 1822 or 18 Nov 1824. I am not sure which date is correct, or why they differ so.
Can anyone clarify the date and give me more information on either person, especially Harmony Mitchell? I cannot tell whether they were simply married there as the closest "civilized" place to the newly-opened Coles County, Il hinterland, which I know they were living in by 1833. this problem has been stumping me for 15 years, so I will be grateful for any help.

Looking for the grave of my ggg grandmother Elizabeth SEALS. In 1850, Elizabeth was with her family in Otter Creek Township, Vigo County, IN. By 1860, the family was in Ross Township, Vermilion County, IL, w/o Elizabeth. So, Elizabeth may have died between 1850 and 1860. I'm sending a query to the Vigo County Library to see if they can help. I'll keep you all posted.

I have been researching the CRESS family of Vigo Co. Indiana. Ezekiel Cress (b. 1813 in Kentucky) may have emigrated to Nevins Township from Kentucky between 1830-1840. I have been unable to ascertain when he married Sarah, his wife, and if she was a Vigo County native. They had 8 children: William, James, George, Reuben, Mary, Margaret and Ezekiel Columbus. If anyone has any information regarding the CRESS family of Vigo County, I would love to share any information I have with you.
09/02/1996 Bob Durham I am working on the Hood family. Charles Hood md Sarah Durham in VA. There is evidence he was in Blount Co., TN 1800-1804 where he appears in Court records as a juror. He is on 1820 Indiana Census in Vigo Co. The Durhams were Quakers, however I find no record of Charles Hood in Quaker records. Here's Descendency Chart: Charles HOOD md Sarah DURHAM Durham HOOD b. 1803, TN md UNKNOWN (Surmise based on son) Durham HOOD b. 1822, VA md Louisa ?? Durham HOOD m2 Louisa, b. 1814 Aaron T. HOOD b. 1829 Robert B. Hood b. 1832 Josephine C. HOOD b. 1836 William H. H. HOOD b. 1840 md Mrs. Evaline Holtz CRAIG (1842-1885) Isabella HOOD b. 1842 James T. Hood b. 1843 They are in Vigon and Vermilion Counties, IN until 1840. This is very preliminary data as I have only begun tracing this limb. I have much on the DURHAMS.
09/03/1996 John Harms I have been able to trace some of my ancestors to Vigo County as far back as 1801, but that's it. Let me run by some names, and if possible, and if you have time, could you see if I can get back a couple more generations? My GGrandfather, Leander McCulloch (McColloch), was born in Terre Haute, Oct 23, 1844. His father, my GGGrandfather, John McCulloch (McCullough, McColloch) was born in Vigo about 1816. His mother, Emily Eagleton, was born there in 1822. Both John and Emily were married in Vigo on Feb 18, 1841. I have not been able to trace back the names of John's parents, my GGG Grandparents (McCullochs, McCollochs, McCulloughs, spelled all three ways in some census'). On the other hand, Emily Eagleton's parents were Alexander R. Eagleton, born about 1801, and Jane McCulloch (McCullah), born about 1805, both, I assume, in Vigo County. That's as far back as I have been able to trace. They were married in Vigo Co. on Dec 7, 1826. As you can see, to add to the confusion, I possibly have McCullochs on both the paternal and maternal sides of the family.
09/03/1996 John Milam My father Ralph Milam was b. Vigo Co. 1904 My gmother Effie B. Smith was b. Vigo Co. 1856 Effie B.'s father Wesley smith b.1840 Vigo Co. Wesley's father Otis B. Smith b. Vigo co. 1840 I am looking for any and all info that I can find on this family

09/03/1996 Merllene Bendixen I am researching my ggg grandfather, James M. RICHEY and would like to exchange info with other descendants. James M. RICHEY (b. Derry Co., Ire, 1798; d Carroll Co., IA, 1890) m. Jane RICHEY in Stark Co., OH, 1826. Their children: Andrew L. "Lock" (b. 1827, Wayne Co., OH; m. Frances TAYLOR, 1854, DeKalb Co., IN); Catherine (b. 1830, OH; m. John HOUGH, 1850, Crawford Co., OH); William H. (b. 1831, OH; m. Sarah A. _____ ); Nancy Ann (b. 1834, Wayne Co., OH; d. 1906, Dedham, IA; m. James Hanford RAMSEY, 1853, Crawford Co., OH); Margaret E. (b 1838, OH; m. Jefferson BEARD, bef 1860, prob DeKalb Co., IN); Caroline (b 1844, OH; m. ____ THOMAS); Emma C. (b. 1850, Medina Co., OH; d. 1927, Norman, OK; m. John HARDIE, 1875; Carroll Co., IA) I suspect there was a second marriage in OH after 1834 (my ancestor's birth) and prior to 1850 as the 1850 Medina Co., OH, census shows James "Ritchey" with spouse "Catherine". An Elizabeth Nelson, age 72, is also with the family. References are made in old obituaries to "the old Richey homestead near Terra Haute" and I have just located James Richey on the 1860 census in DeKalb Co., IN. I do not have marriage information for William or Caroline, but suspect they could be Vigo Co. I also suspect that there are other family connections in Vigo Co. I would be happy to exchange info. Thank you.

I am researching the Paddock family in Vigo County. I have established back to Rhoda Paddock(born ca.1858) who married Moses Watts. I suspect she is a descendent of Ebenezer Paddock, but I am not positive. Furthermore, a book on the Paddock family states that Ebenezer Paddock is possibly a descendent of Robert Paddock, an early migrant to Mass. I would like to establish this line with more certainty.

Scott Higinbotham Fri Oct 11 14:19:28 1996
I am researching my HIGINBOTHAM family who were residing nearby to Vigo County in Johnston Twp., Clark Co., IL in 1850 and have noticed a possible association with the Samuel DAVIDSON found in Vigo County at that time. The 1850 Federal census of Clark Co., IL (p. 274) lists Elizabeth HIGINBOTHAM, age 16 and born in Virginia, in the household of John and Charity Higinbotham, living in Johnston Township. The 1850 Federal census of Vigo County, IN (p. 213) lists an Elizabeth HICKENBOTHAM, age 18 and born in Virginia, in the household of Samuel and Charlotte DAVIDSON located in Sugar Creek Township. The other household member is Albert DAVIDSON, age not given. Interestingly, an 11 year old Albert DAVIDSON is found in the household of John HIGINBOTHAM (Elizabeth's father) in the 1860 Federal census of Clark County, IL (Orange Twp.). This coincidence leads me to postulate that the Elizabeth Hickenbotham found in Vigo Co., IL is the daughter of John Higinbotham. No other relationship between these families is known at this time. I know nothing of the later whereabouts of Albert DAVIDSON(after 1860 in Clark Co.) or his parents Samuel and Charlotte (after 1850 in Vigo Co.). * What is the relationship between the DAVIDSONs and these (or other?) HIGINBOTHAMs? * What is the maiden name of Charlotte Davidson? * Where were these DAVIDSONs from originally? Any answers, information, speculation or outlandish theories gratefully accepted. Thanks! Scott Higinbotham --

Barbara Johnson Jerry, I want to post a query regarding the Vanasdal, Van Arsdal family in Vigo Co. in the early 1900s. My ggf John Isaac Vanasdal was killed when he fell from a utility pole almost in front of the courthouse in 1901. His parent, John and Deborah Vanasdal lived in the county 1900. According to the city directory, there were other Vans, sometimes spelled Van Arsdal, living near John Isaac but I can't find any relationship to them. I feel there was a relationship to at least some of them since it isn't a common name, and would like to learn something, from somebody, regarding the family.
Buddy Mac I am the only living McGowan on my father,s side of the family. He nane is Freeman Pleasant McGowan, born October 4, 1901/1902, in Terre Haute, Indiana. His military record states that his mother died giving birth and his father died from a massive ax injury to the head. These records did not record any names, birth places or birth dates of his parents. He did have a brother Dewey Winston McGowan and listed a half sister who died of cancer. On his induction papers for the navy Dewy McGowan was listed as my father's guardian and my father's age was 18, occupation was farmer, and he signed up for the navy January 14, 1920, at the U> S> Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, ILL. Dewy McGowan was already in the navy and was the recruting person who signed up my father in the navy. My father finished training at Great Lakes and was transfered to Norfolk Naval Base, Norfolk, VA. This is where he met my and married my mother Florence Loretta John F.
