Catherine Pethoud Nov. 10, 1997 I am trying to locate a record of my great grandfather's birth in LaPorte County, IN. He is PETER STERLING BLAKE. According to his obituary in the Nov.16, 1921 issue of the Elwood Call-Leader, Elwood, IN, he was born in LaPorte on March 1, 1834. I imagine that his parents were farmers as he farmed all his adult life. He moved to Iowa as a child and returned to Indiana at 18 yrs.old. I would like to find out who his parents were. His mother may have had relatives in LaPorte. His parents were both born in VA- what is now WV. Thank You.
Diana Timmer Nov. 10, 1997 I am looking for any information on the following families, all who lived in LaPorte County, mainly in or around the city of LaPorte. My maternal grandparents Harold and Leona SCHULTZ. Harold's parents, August J. SCHULTZ and Louise KNICKLEBEIN. Leona's parents, Charles F. SCHROEDER and Myrtle LOWER. I do know they all attended St. John's Lutheran Church in LaPorte. I am also looking for information on my paternal grandparents Bert and Arva CAREY who also lived in LaPorte. Thank you in advance!
Jane Dean Nov. 09, 1997 I am seeking information on any BONESTEEL family members that lived in LaPorte county in the mid 1800's. My great grandfather, Noal Deloss BONESTEEL was born in Indiana, 17 Aug 1850, to Arial BONESTEEL and Harriet WASHBURN Bonesteel. I have reason to believe that there was also another Noal Deloss BONESTEEL, possibly a brother to Arial. Arial (b. 1830) and Harriet (b. 1833) were both born in New York. It is my suspicion that the entire family moved from New York prior to 1850 and then later moved on to Iowa and Kansas. My Noah Deloss BONESTEEL mar. America Ann DAVIS (b. 10 Oct 1858). We are not sure if she was born in Indiana or Iowa.

Sue Marine Nov. 02, 1997 I am the editor of Morgan Memories, the quarterly for the Morgan County, Alabama Genealogical Society. This month I am printing a letter which is in the Elbert Minter collection at our county archives. The letter is from Henry E. Huntley of LaPorte, IN and was written May 31, 1868 to Mr. Josiah Minter in Morgan Co. Evidently Henry must have served as a Union Soldier and was wounded in the battle of Days Gap in southwest Morgan County that took place between April 27 and May 3, 1863. It is thought Henry was cared for by Josiah "Joe" Kolb Minter for about a month. The letter is in Henry's own handwriting and we would be happy to send a copy of it to anyone who might be interested. We thought maybe we could find some descendants who would like to have it.

Gregory Leaming Sun Oct 12 23:52:57 1997 I'm fortunate to have much good information about the first white settler of Springfield Township and LaPorte County's first circuit judge and justice of the peace, Judah LEAMING (1787-1869). He was a Harvard Law grad, liked to write, and his descendants in Iowa and Kansas were (and are) faithful stewards of his letters and legacy. I have tons of info (letters, records) on Judah Leaming (the letters keep a good record of crop and food prices in 1830s LaPorte). But of more interest to others might be the names of those who married Judah's 15 children and four step-children. I'll publish their surnames here. If any ring bells, write me for what little else I might have, and if so moved, share with what you know of the below-listed souls:
BERKHURST, BRYANT, CLARK, FOUTS, GROOM, MARKS, MILLER, MYRICK, NEWLAND, REYNOLDS, SHIPPE (or SHIPPEE), SPEAR, STANTON, TODD, WATSON.

Jann Anderson Tue Jun 17 19:08:03 1997 My great-great grandfather, Bertram L. WILMOT, was born in Indiana. He shows up in the 1870 MN census as living with Electa WILMOT, b. NY.1820. I believe she was his mother, but have been unable to confirm it. In the 1850 Ohio Census, Electa lives in LaPorte County with her husband, Hubbard WILMOT and several children. I suspect that one of the, Lafayette, is my great-great grandfather and that his given name was Lafayette Bertram but that he used the name Bertram or Bert most of his life. I am hoping that someone can help me by finding a birth record or baptism record that will confirm this. He was born c. 1848. Electa's maiden name was STOCKING and there was a STOCKING family living near them, according to the census and I also am trying to find out if they were related and who her parents were. Any information on the STOCKINGS or WILMOTS would be greatly appreciated. Also, Hubbard WILMOT appears to have died at a fairly young age and I'm wondering if he died in Indiana and when.
