I grew up in Sweetser, In. My dad's name was Ernest E. Smith, who died in Sarasota, Fla, around 1979. His dad's name was James Smith, and his grandfather was named Samuel Smith. His great grandfather was a Jesse Smith, who was born in 1814, in the Indiana territory. And that is where I am stopped. I'm certain that he came over from Scotland, but am stymied as to who his father was or point of entry to search passenger lists. James was either buried in Jalapa or Maple Grove cemetary, as was Samuel.

David Murphy died sometime around 1919 in Grant Co. I know very little about this family and would appreciate any pertinent information. David was my greatgrandfather. I am trying to find info on my g-grandfather, John Heath. He had a son, Mayfield Heath b.Sept 1, 1865 d.March 1, 1948. According to family legend, John and his wife were in Clay County near Clay City when Mayfield was born. Mayfield's mother died either in childbirth or soon after and John left Mayfield at the county orphanage and returned to Gas City. John remarried and never came back for Mayfield. Apparently, he had several children and remained in the Gas City area. It is possible that Mayfield was born around Gas City before the family moved to Clay City. I would guess that John Heath was born around 1845, probably in the Gas City area, and may have married there about 1864, since Mayfield appears to have been a first born.

I am seeking information on Franklin Glenn SHAFFER and Mamie TIPPY nee SHAFFER. Their parents were George W. SHAFFER and Minnie Ann DAUGHERTY. Both were born near Clark's Hill, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. Frank was born on June 25, 1879. It was traditional in George's family to call the boys by their middle name. I do not know if Glenn carried this tradition into manhood. The point is that a reference to Frank Shaffer, Glenn Shaffer, or Frank G. SHAFFER may be referring to the same person. Family tradition also states that Glenn was a police officer in Marion, Indiana. I know that in 1918, Frank was living in Colburn, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. In 1935, he was living in Marion, and was married. He died in April of 1975. His last known residence was Marion, Grant Co., Indiana. Little is know about Mamie SHAFFER. She was born after 1888 and before the death of her mother on July 31, 1890. Mamie may have been a nickname, possibly for Mary. Mamie married Jessie TIPPY, and was living in Marion in 1918. Mamie and Jessie were still living in Marion in 1935. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

On March 13th I left a query on these pages concerning my father's adoption by Charles and Fannie Crandall. I received an answer from David Baumbaugh in Oxford MS who told me that his great grandmother was a Crandall. We worked together to make a connection. Later I found there was more to the story, thanks to the Marion Public library and the Grant County Circuit Court. If there are any Crandall descendents that would like to receive a copy of the whole and true story of the adoption of Ward Arnold, send me your address and I will be happy to send you a copy. It is a very interesting story. Finding the answer was a combination of good old-fashioned genealogy research and the Grant County web page. Sam Arnold
